Beautifully done Rus. I just got my own surface grinder the other day. Well it's actually a tool and cutter grinder, but I need to do a quick restoration before I can use it though.
Hi Russ, I realise this video is quite old but thought you may like to hear how I dealt with very similar issues on my grinder. The usual answer is unbalanced wheel and poor bearings, however most of the time the cause of this effect is wheel bounce. The solution is to dress a step in your wheel 0.005" or so so that only 1/4" comes in contact with the work. This means the wheel is much less likely to bounce over the work. Try it, worst case is you have made your wheel a bit smaller!
if your wheel are not balance before you put on the shaft may affect the finish and you have cloudy effect because the wheel jump. in Y axis .030'' and Z axiz .001'' it's ok in Z you can go to .005'' but it's much hard for the left arm. Thanks for sharing!!!
If I had more space in my shop I would definitely be on the prowl for a used surface grinder. I've run out of tools to automate with LinuxCNC. :-) I look forward to your video of this surface grinder under computer control.
Cool! A thou is a pretty "heavy cut" or roughing cut on a SG. Steve at Solid Rock YT channel has a lot of grinder content and good wheel recommendations. And of course BarZ older grinding videos .
I would call it a roughing pass but not a heavy cut. I believe that Steve Barton even talks about taking .003-.005 passes. With the right wheel and material this should not be an issue.

I would agree that . 001" it's pretty heavy, but not uncommon. I would definitely finish with a lighter cut though.
