    Man those onions look great!! I’m jealous as I’ve not had a lot of luck growing them. Would love to see some videos of how you process the different produce, like how you hull peas/limas, and how you save them (canning, freezing, etc). As always, top-notch video and looking forward to Friday’s installment!!

      We don't do much canning besides tomatoes. We freeze all our peas, corn, and lima beans. I'm not a huge fan of most canned vegetables.

    I dearly love to eat fresh green peas, but I hate to shell them. Got roped into it a lot as a kid. Handy when it comes to brute force but not so good at fine work. I can't imagine shelling eighteen quarts but having all those peas in the freezer would be a dream come true. Good gardening there, my friend.

    Thank you Travis ,
    You were blessed like Mr Danny & wanda at Deepsouth Homestead along with Hollis and Nancy Homestead in Florida .
    They both talk about yall all the time .
    This was my 1st year to grow 300+ onions from hoss tools and Dixondale farms here in Texas ,
    We got a very bad rain storm this past monday , i know over 5 plus inches as my rain detector was over 5 inches , so Ive waited a couple days ,
    But now saw you and Mr Danny pull yalls onions. He found 1 rotten ,
    So i dont want to wait .
    Thank you for all your great informative content
    I ringed my onions and Gave them Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0 3 bags over the growing season .

    Question. A dear friend of mine, whom is elderly, gave me a “strawberry onion “ The story goes that berry farmers use these onions for pest control in their fields. They are super sweet and very large in size. Have you heard of these or this practice or is it some ole farmer lore. Thanks. Love the channel and your website!

    Nice onions dog. We have a hard time getting big onions here in Ky. but I still eat lots of green onions. I grow hard neck garlic and the people I buy seed stock from carry some varieties that thrive on you guys type of climate. Their Creole Group variety is fine in zones 7-10 according to this years catalog. Try them out and I’m sure you’ll throw out that old soft neck once you’ve tasted the hard neck type! I usually wait until the tops start falling over, and then I push over the entire row of onion tops onto the bulb of the onion beside it, in order to shade it from the Sun. If it stays dry, they will cure in the field. If it's rainy, I pull them and put them under a shed to finish curing. I usually scissor off the tops and roots when most of them are dry. I bag the best onions for storage and those with defects, such as bull necks, I use first.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 роки тому

      Sounds like a solid process. I do sometimes trim the dried tops if they're hanging over the racks too much.

    The softneck garlic should easily store until Nov so you can replant it. Once the garlic bulbs are cured, are you going to store the ones for replanting in the frig or wait until Aug/Sept to put them in the frig? The onions were impressive. Mine have been battered by the extended cold we had this year. Very unusual how cold it's been this spring. I'm guessing my onions won't be ready until mid-August or they will just be small. 500 to 1000 figs next year. That will be a nice little side business for ya.

    • @LazyDogFarm

All beans must be a cool weather kind of crap I’m assuming, I have a provider green bean that’s been doing pretty good but starting to look a little rough temperatures are hitting upper 80s to 90. Also I have what I thought was Christmas lima beans, L O L but turned out to be a small version of that I guess something called a 1500 cave been. Has not done too well. Probably too hot already

    If you cut the garlic scapes off, they will put that energy into bulb production and not flowering. Once scapes appear there is usually about two weeks to harvest time, but judge by the leaf die back. Softneck garlic in general stores much longer than hardneck. I have some varieties that last almost a year! Unlike onions, garlic should be put in the shade to cure as soon as it is harvested or it will sun scald.

    Travis do you ever cut the foliage or roots off your onions, or do you just leave them be and cut it off before you eat them?

    Is there any kinda cover crop that can help them do better next year?

    • @LazyDogFarm

      A nitrogen-fixing cover crop wouldn't hurt -- something like Balansa Fixation Clover would be good. If you could then graze that clover with chickens, it would be even better!

    • @LazyDogFarm

      We got the Sapelo Sweet variety from NE Seeds. But since it's a short-day onion, it wouldn't do well up there in NY.

      We put Nature Safe 8-5-5 in the furrow at planting. Once the plants started growing, we side dressed with Nature Safe 13-0-0 twice, about a month apart. We also ran some Agrothrive General Purpose through the overhead sprinkler a couple times, but I don't remember exactly when we did that.

    So if your cats live with the storage rack, you could call them Pole Barn Cats. I had something worse than a polecat last night to deal with. I found a dead possum up in the back part of the property. Dug a hole about 10' away in soft soil and move it. The smell was so bad I almost threw up. Couldn't go back to cover it up until this morning. Couldn't figure out if the possum got into somebody's rat poison, a cat got it, or it was just old.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 роки тому

      We see a possum around here every now and then. The animals usually run them off. I bet that was a stinky mess!

    Curious what's your favorite butter bean. My grandpa always grew Jackson wonder speckled butter beans so it's all I have ever grown for sentimental reasons.

      I prefer the climbing types because they're so much easier to pick. We really like Christmas Lima Beans.

      I'm sure it has some effect, but not much we can do about the humidity. I don't have anywhere indoors to store that many onions.

    Onions from seed question here... Every time I have ever grown onions from seed they just seem to take forever to get out of that first leaf stage and start growing. Is there anything special I should be doing to boost early growth?

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 роки тому +1

      We start fertilizing ours when those first leaves "flip" up. Also helps to trim the tops of the seedlings -- seems to toughen up the transplants and make them more durable during transplanting.

    You are supposed to cut the scapes off the garlic otherwise they won't produce bulbs.

      I usually only add compost in late summer / early fall. We'll be putting sweet potatoes where the garlic is now.
