- Tel Tru Smoker Thermometer Install. The stock thermometer that came on my Bayou Classic Offset Smoker was inaccurate. I replaced it with a Tel Tru, but had to enlarge the mounting hole first.
I got the thermometer from www.4thegrill.com

I want to use this for my thermometer. My dad has about 10(I know it's a problem) smokers; water, gas, wood, electric, vertical, egg, charcoal, indirect. This summer we are designing a DIY "solar" smoker(there will be a smoker box for wood chips). I haven't found any videos that do this for true BBQ(we want brisket!) . And you have got to have a good temp read to make good BBQ.
great video thanks a bunch!!! very informative...
Bobby You’re welcome. I glad you found it useful.
Great Tutorial.......
Cwj432 thanks for watching
Thanx,
Do you have any leakage of smoke after you drilled and replaced the gauge? I was thinking about putting a gasket around the nut
Dennis Cudal none what so ever. If you drill the hole the correct size for the thermometer you should be fine. That being said, if you have a high heat gasket that will fit, throw it on there. It couldn’t hurt.
Do they still have these at Costcos ? Can't find them anywhere .
Chester Barden I don't think they do. Costco tends to get several grills and smokers in stock around March/April, and then they are gone. So maybe next year. If you do see one there, and you're in the market for an Offset, buy it!! It's a beast. I'll be posting a rub cook tonight. Thx for the question, Dave.
How much should i spend on the step drill bit? Amazon has them as low as $15 and lowes has them as high as $70 - i have a smokey mountain weber so there top part is not too thick.. please advise.
Tyler Parr I’ll be honest, I bought the cheap one from Amazon. It worked fine for my WSM. My offset smoker was a different story. The metal on the Offset was too thick.

Wish I would've watched this first. I botched my smoker the other day, accidentally drilled a 1" hole using a hole saw. Now I'm trying to find a way to cover up the old hole while I use high temp gasket to cover the space I screwed up.
Sir BMW do you know anyone with a welder? How much of a gap is around the thermometer?
Use painters tape on the inside spread the high temp rtv and let it cure, pull the tape off and smoke away.
If the stem is too long, can i cut stem?? Or if i cut it i damage the ttermómeter??
Zheus Herrera I’m pretty sure you can’t cut the stem. The thermometer would no longer be accurate.
Dave's Ohio BBQ & Cooking ok thank you nice advise....
They sell an identical thermometer with a 2.5” stem if that is better suited for your application.
Does this come calibrated?
Yes. And I’m 99% sure you can’t re-calibrate it if it goes out.
Dave's Ohio BBQ & More ok thanks, because Idont see a set screw to calibrate on the glow model
