The metal boxes dropping on them came up from the air above, so of course Toph couldn’t sense that, and they’re also made of metal, which she cannot sense either, yet. Why are people so stupid, it’s so hard to believe when you yourself is the smartest guy in the room, not at school stuff, but social skills, life knowledge, and great attention to details. Autism is the best thing ever, when you only have the positives of it, and no negatives, or at least have learned to minimize the negatives to non existent issues.
Spartan indirectly points out correctly that Toph is a really well balanced character - she's a really, really OP bender but she has a disability that can strike totally out of the left field in a way you don't even anticipate because most viewers ... well aren't blind. And you don't often get characters that are living on two extremes in terms of being invulnerable and vulnerable, that are really well rounded.
That guy who was swinging like Tarzan would’ve actually gotten Toph, if he hadn’t shouted, cause he was up in the air, and you could see Toph’s ear twitch when she heard him, why Toph would be useless against airbenders, or firebenders who can fly.
You may not get the references made in this episode to American Wrestling. Like, The Boulder is a sort of parody of the wrestler "The Rock" (AKA Dwayne Johnson). The event being called "Earth Rumble 6" is probably a reference to how the pay-per-view, biggest wrestling event of the year, WrestleMania are also numbered. And of course Earth Rumble is based on the wrestling event The Royal Rumble in which the way you defeat an opponent, is to knock them out of the ring. Also Earth Rumble has a champion with a championship belt, just like in wrestling. And the "Fire Nation" earth bender wasn't actually from the fire nation, as he was an earth bender. His job was to play the heel, to be the character whose sole purpose was to be hated by the crowd. It's a reference to how in wrestling in the 80s, during The Cold War, tensions were high against the U.S. and Russia, so many villains in movies and shows, etc, were Russian. It was all pretty much propaganda. And the WWF (Now WWE) was no exception. They'd have characters in wrestling that they would say were from Russia and they would come out and talk bad about the audience, the other wrestlers, and the U.S. just to fire the crowd up. Their job was to be hated and to mostly lose to the "All American" type characters like Hulk Hogan. They even gave the "Fire Nation" Earth bender a Russian accent as a nod to that era of wrestling. And the masked earth bender was probably a reference to many luchador type masked wrestlers that were originally popular in Mexico. Like the original Rey Mysterio. I loved wrestling as a kid, so I enjoy seeing random references like this in other shows. And they got the wrestler Mick Foley to do the voice of The Boulder. He's a good friend of The Rock and they were tag-team partners for quite a while.
Dude! I didn't know they really got Mick Foley to do the boulders voice. That's awesome! Now I can't not hear it. I didn't know that. I guess the rock wasn't available or he'd have cost too much. I can't remember if he was doing movies around this time or not. But Mick Foley as well as his persona's Mankind and Cactus Jack were some of my favorites wrestlers.
As far as that epic avatar presence that Kiyoshi and Roku have, remember they are adults and have fully mastered their bending while Aang is a child and is still developing his powers. So excited y’all have finally met Toph! My absolute favorite character!
what i adore about the way they wrote toph is the way they didn’t write her to be an incredible bender despite of her disability but BECAUSE of it. they took something that people would traditionally look at as a weakness and made it into her biggest strength.
I wouldnt say its a strength. She makes up for it for sure, but its mainly her reaction times. An earthbender with sight wouldnt struggle against projectiles or someone shooting other elements at them. Toph is at a heavy disadvantage there.
@@Serryy It's both for sure. Her seismic sense in my opinion gives her more of an advantage than her blindness gives her a disadvantage in my opinion. Anyone but a master she's just gonna body anyway. You also see her deal with earthbending projectiles quite easily here, but that's also because they're touching the ground when they're earthbending. But you're absolutely right as well.
@@RatingsFor There are like 2 or 3 moments where the Gaang fights many enemies and Toph gets bailed out by someone else against projectiles. A big part of the community just massively overrates her imo.
Toph's ability to see relies on vibrations which she feels more clearly when the enemy is on the same surface as her. So the Mole Man wrestler made a lot of noise to confuse and corner them, giving his friends a chance to sneak on top of the wall where she wouldn't be able to see them as well🤷♀️
Good thing to note about Toph calling Aang twinkle toes and "2 little girls fight" was not actually a trashtalk. It is more like a description. Since she can't see, she can only describe a person by their prescence.
So happy you've finally met my favorite character! Toph is badass and snarky. And Spartan is right, it seems extra humiliating to be beaten by a blind, little girl. So many good episodes coming up!
in the first season, aang had to travel all the way from the south pole to the north pole. they only had to backtrack half that way, so it makes sense they would find aang's next master more quickly.
I can speak for a lot of us when I say: We have been very excited for you to meet this character. I know you guys are a few episodes ahead on patreon, but I can't wait to see your thoughts on her as we continue on.
Oh, you guys finally got to meet the best character in the whole series. Yes, Toph's parents are extremely overprotective; there are many parents of people with disabilities who think their children can do absolutely nothing without help, unfortunately, and in that concern, they end up being complete idiots.
I think at the end it wasn't so much overprotectiveness. Her father said she'd be guarded, not protected. Guarded makes me think of like a prison guard. Not so much concerned with her safety but keeping her were he can keep an eye on her. Remember that not only is she not allowed out due to her blindness, but no one in the general public even knows she exists. Makes me think that maybe her father is concerned about what she could do to his image.
So many people misunderstand the "they cheated" scene. People cant' SEE airbending. It doesn't actually HAVE the color you see as a viewer, that's just there for the benefit of the audience. That's why they were able to trick the fire nation guys into thinking Katara could earth bend last season. They couldn't see that aang was hovering the boulder with air so they believed it was being raised with earth bending. So when someone knocks you down with airbending, it just looks like you fell down. Hence, it looks like she fell out of the ring on purpose.
I’m a bit disappointed why a little girl character that you haven’t been introduced to properly yet gives the impression that she’d be “uncool” and “useless”. 👀
in real life, if you have warriors/soldiers fighting wars and a little girl rocks up, she's going to be pretty "useless" and "uncool" compared to the trained elite on the battlefield keyword *not introduced to properly*, now that we've met her, we like her very much. because she has shown to be quite useful and powerful
Yes but at this point, you’ve seen kids fight. You’ve seen a 12 year old Aang and a 14 year old GIRL Katara fight and be “useful”. Also based on the kind of content you watch, you seem to be the kind of person who watches anime… and characters, like little girls, defy expectations. You also watch Game of Thrones, I hope you didn’t think Arya was useless and uncool when she first appeared onscreen and you knew nothing about her yet other than that she’s a little girl? The disappointment comes from the foregone assumption that she’s going to be useless and uncool - especially considering everything I just stated.
Love Toph and so will you! Toph can sense earth/boulders in the air but not something like water or air. Toph also adds humor to the show so Sokka will have some competition on that front.
and now you have met the single best character in the series ever. no joke, Toph is by far the single most awesome, most funny, more bad ass and most chill character in all of Avatar, I make no jokes when I call her BEST GIRL because she is.

@@UncensoredScion It's hard to comment without spoiling, but I hold him so high for the why he molded other characters, and the importance those characters had to the ultimate goal. Including toph. Amazing show.
I don't think it's a spoiler bc it's not in the series but rather in the comics, but i don't think it's a big detail just a fun fact that you won't see on the show Both Bumi and Toph are powerful earth enders like you said, and apparently in the comics they have a duel and it end in a tie because neither of them managed to beat the other, they are just THAT good lol
At the end there, you both seemed confused about the shared interest for those two guys. Greed. Their shared interest is money. All the martial arts styles used for bending are based on real martial arts. Toph's style of earthbending is based on the southern praying mantis style. According to the mythology that goes with this style, it was invented by a blind woman.
Guys, we simply can't compare Aang to the previous avatars, we only see them in their prime form, after years of studying and of actually being the avatar. Aang never got to do any of those things. He's been the avatar for just a few months and he already suffered a great trauma, let's give him a break
I'm a bit late, but I loved your reactions to Kyoshi. She has her own book series that goes into her life and she is a pretty brutal person, it's very interesting how she views the world and good and evil. As well as the water Avatar from the Ko bit, he's given more backstory in the books and his life was awful and difficult. The creators built an incredibly cool world, and I'm loving seeing y'all experience it for the first time! Also, the reason the two earthbenders thought Aang had cheated is because airbending isn't visible to the people in the show. It's only visible to us because the animators needed the viewer to be able to see the air. So the earthbenders saw no contact at all and she flew out of the ring, which is why they thought she took a dive.

Regarding Spartans comment "if toph can beat bumi", there has been a lot of conversations between fans of the show some believe bumi would some believe toph would win, i would advise not looking into thise discussions as they are packed with spoilers. The writers decided to write a comic which devided into that, where bumi and toph had a friendly spared to decide which is the best earth bender, there were some amazing lines said by both such as bumi telling toph that he has toenails that can bend better than him and toph saying "cause you are old as dirt, doesn't mean you can bend it". Unfortunately the spare was cut short for reasons i wont go into for spoiler reasons, and both agreed to spare again to find which is the best, but we never got an answer to that question. But i guess the writers wanted to leave the decision to their audiences fantasy
Toph was originally going to be a big strong guy. Then, they went in the exact opposite direction. And, they hit gold. Toph is extremely strong in some ways, but has issues in others. She's basically Daredevil combined with Earth-bending. In case you didn't know, Daredevil is an American superhero that is blind but has a kind of radar sense and super senses that allow him to "see" the world around him so well he can fight crime. It seems farfetched until you remember that there are plenty of animals that operate very well in total darkness. Bats can fly and catch flying insects in total darkness.
I think it's cool Toph couldn't react to the complete ambush, it makes her abilities realistic and grounded. *wink* She was distracted by the dude in front, and everyone else stayed quiet in an elevation, not technically touching the ground where she could sense them.
Kyoshi didn't use the four elements in the last episode. Spartans said it in the commentary in their last video. She used wind and earthbending only when she created kyoshi island.
I know youve read this comment a million times but for real THIS is where the rising action begins. We have our crew and things will progress very fast. So many creative episodes to come.
"Fire Nation Guy" is actually an earthbender from the Earth Kingdom. The entire Earth Rumble event is based on WWE's Royal Rumble and Fire Nation Guy is playing the character of an obnoxious foreigner.
Back in the Swamp episode, you mentioned how the girl kinda sounded like the girl from the Fortune Teller episode. Now that you've met her, I can inform you that it is the same voice actress.
So, in an ATLA comic book which consists of multiple short stories. There's a comic where Toph and Bumi fight each other to see who's better. And it ends in a tie! But remember, Bumi is in/slightly past his prime where as Toph is before her prime, she's only 12 years old! Imagine her as an adult pheeeeeeeeeeew...
Something cool is how Toph is essentially barefoot all the time to be able to see. There’s a detail in book three - not a spoiler - with how she wears shoes lol. Hopefully you notice it
You should add more disscussion breaks during the episodes to dodge the copyright strikes, longer periods of the show with 10-60 sec breaks to discuss in between segments.
The Boulder is making fun of The Rock and how he speaks about himself in the third person. The Rock says, know your role and shut your mouth! Do you smell what The Rock is cookin’?
It doesn't matter that the bounty hunters got beaten in Earthbending competition - they are not bound now by the rules of the sport and they are not confined to just bending earth.
Every time she reacts to flying ibjects their a reason like the thrown rock well he just dug through ground she sensed him throw ig , the swinging guy he is literaly screaming

Toph's dad's face was modeled after Nicholas Cage.
Bumi and toph fight in the comics
Who wins?
Toph was originally going to be a big strong guy. Then, they went in the exact opposite direction. And, they hit gold. Toph is extremely strong in some ways, but has issues in others. She's basically Daredevil combined with Earth-bending. In case you didn't know, Daredevil is an American superhero that is blind but has a kind of radar sense and super senses that allow him to "see" the world around him so well he can fight crime. It seems farfetched until you remember that there are plenty of animals that operate very well in total darkness. Bats can fly and catch flying insects in total darkness.
I was excited bout you guys getting to this point. from here on it kind of becomes the Toph show. Toph is the GOAT
Toph is easily one of my favorite character. Straightforward no BS powerful Earth bender.
I think it's cool Toph couldn't react to the complete ambush, it makes her abilities realistic and grounded. *wink*
She was distracted by the dude in front, and everyone else stayed quiet in an elevation, not technically touching the ground where she could sense them.
Yes, the swamp girl is here. E P I C.
Also: Water Triiibeee
I always get hyped to watch your avatar reactions 🫰🏽 can’t wait for book 3!!!
Kyoshi didn't use the four elements in the last episode. Spartans said it in the commentary in their last video.
She used wind and earthbending only when she created kyoshi island.
10:50 "I wonder if she could beat Bumi." So do all of us my friend.
I’m glad you recognized immediately, she’s a fkin weapon bro
Nice someone new to the franchise. Enjoy it and I'll pop in to watch your reactions
I know youve read this comment a million times but for real THIS is where the rising action begins. We have our crew and things will progress very fast. So many creative episodes to come.
She couldnt sense the metal cages above her and Aang because she can only see what is touching the ground.
So Pudgy you are no longer the queen. Toph is here!!!!! Love you guys keep being amazing ❤️
Hopefully you notice it
Always loved this episode. Seeing Toph turn the tables on her opponents is such a treat.
The Goat has made her appearance!! You guys are going to love Toph!!
Yay, the one we have all been waiting for! Toph is in the building.
There are two Avatar shows. Everything before Toph, and everything after Toph.
14:20 If your girl looks at you this way...run. She's thinking of all the ways she could kill Aang.
You finally made it!!! From now on, every episode will be GOATED!
Its great from here, lets be real, there are at least 2 more filler episodes remaining.
Toph is Legendary.
Toph makes this show so much better i think you two will both love her
there is a fan made YT video about how Toph first learns earth bending it is really good and worth watching whether or not you record the reaction
Huh?
Who would win: Aang and Jinora or Kyoshi and Toph?
Toph can only feel whats conected to ground flying and falling objects are basicly invisible to her
Every time she reacts to flying ibjects their a reason like the thrown rock well he just dug through ground she sensed him throw ig , the swinging guy he is literaly screaming
Oh boy we are entering year 1PT (post toph)
Ahh yes, the episode I have been waiting for, it's all up from here boys (except maybe one or two episodes but that's imo).
THE GOAT OF EARTHBENDING IS HERE! TOPH BEI FONG HAS ENTERED THE STAGE!!!!!!
whenever i’m rewatching a couple episodes of avatar at a time, a common place for me to start is this episode
Waited so long for this episode 😍 this is where its really going to start to pick up.
The hype is real 😝
Spartan gonna love the next episode. 😏
It's not JUST a bag it's Prada lmao
Finally the main character enters the stage. Funny how Spartan refered to her as irrelevant in the swamp episode.
Fire Nation Man is a heel (a bad guy in wrestling).
I’m finally watching your blind bandit episode and ahhh I’m so exited to see your guys reaction to seeing Toph for the first time!! She’s my favvv character 😋, Toph is really just THAT bitch
I told you Meng will be back, in different form, Toph and Meng voiced by the same person 😁
Now this is how you make a strong inclusive female character❤️
you guys are cute and i love your reactions this is one of the best series ever i watch alot of your other videos but i can assure you ill be here for every single one of these!!
Toph's introduction was a game changer for me. I rewatched this episode many times when I first saw it. That fighting style of hers was so cool to see.
Toph best character :D She is also in Korra the sequel
10:51 i think there's comics about that one
Hippo LITERALLY ate that sh#t
Thats probably why his teeth look like that. lol
