  • On this video you will see how I fix a day wheel, and how I replace a balance complete on an Orient watch caliber 46943 (EM5U). The teeth on the back of the day wheel were sliding against the wheel itself not allowing the day of the week correctly align on the three position. On the other hand, The balance on this watch was not working due to a faulty balance spring. I found easier to buy a balance complete instead of spending hours fixing the hairspring. The balance complete is very cheap for this kind of movement (less than 4.00 USD on ebay)

What is the correct size screwdriver for an Orient rotor? Or do you just have to get one of the correct width and grind the depth to fit snugly?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You're an excellent teacher and I enjoy watching your videos. This is not an easy hobby to learn. Learning about and acquiring the tools takes time.. Having you take some of the guesswork has helped me tremendously.. So please keep up the good work!

Your hand blocked the view. Is the screw off the center of the rotor what you turn to manually wind the watch? Have you ever measured how many turns for a full power reserve?

Hi Robert! The screw was not off the center, it was the rotor that was misplaced. Once you take the screw you will see that the hole on the rotor is not completely round, it has a couple of notches. If those are not aligned correctly, the rotor will sit at an angle causing it to rub against the movement, or the caseback.
These type of movement can't be wound mannually, so you depend on the rotor to wind the mainspring.
When it comes to screwdrivers, what you have to make sure is that the screwdriver is not bigger than the screw head diameter, or too small. Screwdrivers of the wrong size will easily slip. Also, the thickness of the tip is important. A screwdriver should be snugged on a screw' slot. Sharpening screwdrivers is paramount on this hobby. I have an arkansa stone at hand always to dress, shape, and sharpen screwdrivers.
