A lot of great discussion points here, fellas. The measurement tolerances thing can be a tough one. The standard +/- 0.5" is understandable from a manufacturing perspective, but there's times where it can be a real pain. In my own experiences, there's plenty of times where it's no big deal e.g. jacket is 0.5" longer than stated, or the issue can be remedied with some inexpensive tailoring. In some cases though, it can really effect the garment as a whole in terms of silhouette and even fit-category (and often in these cases, it can't be remedied by tailoring). I recently got a pair of Unbranded UB221 - the size chart says knee 9.5, leg opening 8.25; what I got was knee 9.5, leg opening 7.75. While that's within the 0.5" tolerance (and 0.5" doesn't sound like much), it changes the silhouette from a mild taper to a strong taper, the net result being that I got something that isn't what I wanted (and I don't feel like eating the NZD$60 return shipping cost). To balance the negative anecdote with a positive one, I've got 5x pairs of RGT pants, 3x RGT jackets and 2x RGT shirts, and they're all within 1/8" tolerance on all measurements - that kind of consistency and reliability is a big part of what's kept me buying more of their stuff. (I also like how if one of their garments is different from their usual sizing, they'll mention it on the product page). I guess the difference in comparing these two brand examples comes down at least in part to what Nick said - cost is a factor. Maybe it's unrealistic to expect the same kind of consistency in tolerances at Unbranded price level vs RGT price level? Or is it more about QC? I've got a few things from Taylor Stitch, and despite the relatively low price (compared to something like RGT) and offshore manufacture, their measurements are always bang-on. Also, shoutout to the long back/short legs crew!
My biggest peeve is a sort of classism/elitism where people just don’t seem to understand that some people are just not in a position to work within the same sort of budget and availability’s as they are. Another is completely overlooking what a small and niche subset they are. Here’s the thing, I wouldn’t buy and wear a pair of Doc Martens and if anyone asks for my opinion I would tell them my issues with them and offer an alternative. I would never unprompted start going off on them. That said, for most people a pair of Doc’s will honestly do just fine. They are in an approachable price range, easy to get and try-on in store and have a very dependable aesthetic which will never be off-style. As long as the person is happy with their purchase that’s what matters. I hate when people try to convince others who are perfectly happy and even proud (for some of us it takes quite a bit of disciplined saving up of money to get these items) that they should have buyers regret, when they otherwise would not have had any issue with their purchase. Also denimheads are usually in denial about how pedantic they are and how much it actually matters. A pair of Wranglers are just about the only jeans you’ll ever need. And since we’re ranting here, a lot of my purchases now come down to ease of care. If there is an item I like the look of but needs its own unique care guide different to everything else than I will just pass. The older I get the more my most worn items of clothing are ones I can just bundle into the washing machine and then into the dryer without worrying about ruining (especially living in England, the weather means there’s often a lot of wetness and mud, and limited windows where I can afford to dry things outside on a line, and I just don’t have the living space or sometimes to to dry them inside). The biggest exception I make here are for outerwear garments like coats and thick wool jumpers, items which I don’t need to wash as often or as own as many of as T-shirts, for example. Anyway fun video! Thanks for giving me a place to exercise some demons haha
Awesome video guys! Nick is the definition of a great human being. Love seeing the collaborations, and your channel grow Alejandro. Thanks for all the info fellas🙏🏼
Heard you mention longer length in casual stuff like sweatpants etc. I recently tried out Camber because they have tall sizes and they worked out really well
Great content! Nick is one of my favorite people even though I don't know him. His vids have provided many hours of entertainment. I'm just a blue-collar working stiff who loves nice menswear. The boot snob/gatekeepers seem to really hate him.
My hate: clothes they try to have a British/Italy logo and/or name but say, "Designed in England, made in China", "Designed in Italy, made in Bangladesh". I bought Docs when they were made in England, I buy Barbour when it is made in England, Tilley when made in Canada. If your item is made in China, it has nothing to do with England. I saw many today like that, but also picked up socks actually made in England. I also saw Frank & Oak which I have no reference for but know they have a mid-20s fan base but everything was made in a sweatshop Asian country. You want the glam or being a "brand" but you don't want to put in the work to make your own goods in the country you are in. Conversely, I got my spouse some Costco clothes that were made in Canada; and I have seen Canadian sewing factories.
This gets me as well. Pretty much the entirety of a thing will be made and put together by underpaid works in horrific conditions before being shipped to England where someone sow’s on a button or two and they can slap a ‘made in England from imported materials’ tag on it.
I hate that men's fashion is so boring, there's just no variety in what is considered "socially acceptable". Most men never wear anything more interesting than jeans and a t-shirt and will go out thinking they're well dressed.
lets not gatekeep - i like mens uniqulo v neck supima cotton shirts - wear well - color stays with washes - slim or athletic fit - although they have boxy trendy fit too
The raw denim community is still horrible. At least on reddit. I found a made in the USA 100% cotton denim jacket that seemed to be made in the 80s or 90s, and they removed my post and told me it wasnt raw denim because i hadnt bought it brand new and that thrift finds were steictly prohibited. May as well call the community r/newdenim
1. r/rawdenim does not encompass the entirety of the community. It's just an online forum... 2. You 100% did not read the rules of the sub before deciding to post. Had you simply left out the part that your jacket was a thrift find, there's a high chance the post would have been left alone. 3. If you're wondering why the mods are so strict about the rules, just take a look at other fashion subreddits. Literally just people trying to flex how good their thrifting skills are. The sub is for sharing cool denim, not for bragging how lucky you were when walking into your local goodwill.
@rhithym if you're going to name your forum "raw denim" any and all raw denim should be accepted, whether it was found at a thrift store or not. And no, the mods tried to argue with me that my jacket wasn't raw denim and that I couldn't repost without the mention of it being a theifted find. If you're a fashion forum that bans thrift finds, then your forum is just a safe space for snobs, i stand by what i said.
That is the 18 East Triple Gauze shirt in White! I don’t believe they have the white anymore, but they do have the black from what I understand on the site still 😁
In Canada and the US (and many other countries) they have to put where it's made on the garment somewhere. I know there is a lot of criticism about tag labelling but in this age of digital shopping they should at least have to mention the garments origin on the product page. This is a policy argument. Cheddar for Prime Minister!
Good vibe, Snobs are ridiculous. Just think of poor lil Biggie smalls sewing alligator patches and getting hit in the face when they actually take a lot on the inside of shirt.
the gatekeeping comment about small brands spending so much money towards advertising and somehow it being nullfied by some dickhead that gatekeeps sounds so stupid to me. Like it obviously reached someone and that someone bought the piece. It was advertising that worked as intended and there is nothing that individual is doing from blocking other eyeballs from seeing those ads put out by the brand. Yeah you limit some of the word of mouth a brand might receive but it's not limiting the reach of ads. There is nothing wrong with gatekeeping btw. it's a means to not dilute a style so much, in a space where we are all trying to have our own say in how we style ourselves we don't really want to have every other bloke wear the same thing we are wearing because we value our individuality and sometimes a brand is particularly like by it's own subculture and scene which wants to keep it's purity. Also what your cohost said about people being snobish is not what gatekeeping is. If a person is saying "hey your boot is not that great, get x brand and then you'll have a truly good boot" that is letting somebody know what they have and should get albeit in an asshole way but they aren't keeping you from knowing what other brands are out there. It's not keeping you from engaging in the hobby either, you can still comment and continue to learn. Anyways i don't even feel sympathetic towards encounters with snobs? like so what ? they were snobs to someone and then the newbie was put off by the hobby... like one less consumer. do we really need MORE consumers? The next asshole is going to come minutes later and follow that boot subreddit's advice and buy more boots. Consumers are a dime a dozen and one snob putting off a few newbies doesn't sound like a problem when consumerism is a huge issue.
@8:44 i'm new here - youtube is recommending you to me - i suppose they want me to take a break from all the liam payne conspiracies and angry rants in the comments sections
Amen brother simple mind simple man. Obviously people do care. Hence the huge industry. Maybe some people like to put a little more soul into the things they do.
@@peuptyhaha interesting. When I see trends come and go, I don’t think “complicated”. In fact, that is the last thing I think about those who follow trends. @@SuperPlastered agreed- nothing complicated about following trends. In fact I’d consider following trends the most simplistic approach to fashion/style. And you also don’t realize the vast majority of people who play instruments have no soul. Hence why they can’t make anything original or new sounding. They just play their instruments like they were taught. I remember the orchestra at my college, a collection of the most robotic, soulless musicians I’ve ever heard

Lack of sizing tables, including sweep for upper garments - enragingly substituted with sizing ‘advice’ or charts showing a ‘range’.

In addition to Nudie, G Star Raw offers decent transparency. However, their style is completely different.
I hate vanity sizing. I have a mirror, I know exactly how fat or fit I am. I want my tag size to match the actual size of the pant.
