Michael's performance on the first four Santana albums was absolutely first rate. His performance on Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock completely off the scale... truly one of the best highlights of the Woodstock movie.
The greatest drum solo of all time SOUL SACRAFICE mind blowing to watch Micheals energy as he blew everyones mind with SANTANA at Woodstock when music was real.
So glad they got this on film. I'm amazed at how old he is, that is, til I looked in the mirror! Good Lord, who's that old man looking back at me?????????????
Great story. The look on his face at Woodstock was priceless. He knew that he completely nailed. The best performance I've seen. Thanks for posting this.
I'd like to add this comment about this guy. I saw him on the film Woodstock when I was 15 years old. This guy's throat disguise drumsolo was completely completely incredible. I couldn't get over he wasn't that much older than me. Then I played drums for years and I'm a singer songwriter with autumn hill records and I can tell you. This guy's drum solo was just absolutely to this day just listened to it. He was a great great drummer. I have a lot of respect for him and every time I see it on the old film. Is still one of the best? It's just amazing can't say enough good about him god bless you my friend
I had the privilege of attending Woodstock and did not know who the band Santana was.....yet! After having my mind blown by them, I became an instant fan. His drum solo on SOUL SACRIFICE is the stuff of legends.
Same with me. I was close to the stage. Being from the N.Y. area I thought it was a Puerto Rican Band. But, they were introduced as the Santana Blues Band I think. Cannot recall. But, it changed my life! Met the band in a small club in Minneapolis a few months later. No stage. Two complete shows two feet away. Yikes!!
I believe that Jimi Hendrix was quoted as saying that Santana was the best music act of the entire Woodstock festival. The entire band was incredible but Michael and Carlos were on some kind of level of stratosphere that cannot even be put into words.
Oh, this is choice! I last saw Michael at the Seattle Pop Festival July of 69. I was "working" there at age 18 and have some great stories to tell from that 3 day weekend. Among them was going backstage (under the stage) and it was wall to wall creme de la creme of the best rock and roll had to offer. I'll never forget seeing Michael jamming with a snare, high hat and bass drum with Chuck Berry and... I'll be damned if I can remember who the other cat was, but it was so over the top cool to be there, a drummer myself, just trippin' through that moment and all it represented to me. And still does after all of these years. Thanks Michael, thanks to all who made that scene what it was and remains: inimitable. And kudos to Boyd Grafmyre who had the vision to ultimately become one of the great unsung Northwest rock promoters of that era; and who hired a couple of off-the-street hitch-hiking hippie kids for "security" in what became for them a very close-to nirvana experience much like seeing the Beatles up very, very close in 1966. Lucky us.
Great story! Michael's a great drummer! I always enjoy hearing about great musicians in their early years, because Ive always wondered if their skills were largely natural or from years of hard work. (I guess comparing my own unimpressive skill level to theirs. Lol). And when I see a young man not even out of highschool playing at such a high level,...I realize that most of these phenomenal musicians from the 60's & 70's have been blessed with a natural gift of musical talent.
A very lovely & well crafted comment...thank you for your input. From someone who graduated HS the year of Woodstock...the 'awe' of these masterful musician's talents only becomes more fully comprehended with the passage of time. Sadly, we have & are losing so many of these 'maestros'.
I met Michael Shrieve at a drumfest in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia about 20 years ago. What an incredible drummer and a beautiful person. It was a pleasure to meet him and chauffeur him around. ❤
Thanks for posting this! Michael Shrieve is a brilliantly creative musician, and a fine human being as well. Thanks for your musical contributions to the world Michael!
Was at the Santana show at Woodside High School, Redwood City (1967 or 68) that Michael Shrieve talks about being in the audience. It's a Beautiful Day ( White Bird) was their opening band. Santana's show was phenomenal, magical, full of energy, and still resonates. With Shrieve joining Santana and as shown by performance at Woodstock he increased the energy and magic exponentially.
Truly one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was so intense and a showman as well. His drum set was so simple to get such a great sound. Thanks Michael.
Love how he’s still spreading his life stories even after this pandemic, his performances here on UA-cam probably got a fuck ton more views during it. Amazing Drummer who’s recognition is growing.
Incredible musician that I was lucky to have crossed paths with.....The Saturday afternoon I walked on to the field at the original Woodstock and Santana was on stage.....Several times at the Fillmore East....years later in the back of my cab in the early eighties....Soul Sacrifice is a must listen at least once a year.
I don't care if this 'dates me' but Michael, when I was a mere child, we both were. I as I walked into a place called the 'Music Odessey' on Wilshire Blvd in WLA looking for anything/something to buy to pique my penchant yearnings for rhythm and rock/Latin music, I heard Santana's first album and I heard you drumming on the Soul Sacrifice track, and I never looked back. I've tried and I've cried to replicate your drum solo to that epic song. Thanks for changing my life, and my musical excitements!
Starting at age 10, I played drum kit for 45 years, and Michael's performance at Woodstock has always been one of my greatest inspirations. I can still watch it and just Smile, Smile, Smile.

Great story. I always remember looking at his hands on that gig. He must have been taught properly. His left hand technique in particular was just perfect
I met Michael at the house Santana had in San Jose in the summer of 69. I was a 17 y/o runaway and hung out with him for a couple days doing acid. I remember a party we went to in Redwood City and we were playing drums on everything all around the house! We had such a blast and he said I was a natural, lol. I seriously doubt he remembers me and I don't know if it's the acid haze or what but I didn't remember he was Santana's drummer until I saw the Woodstock movie! Michael is really great! I didn't start playing the drums until I turned 50 and 18 years later, I started getting more serious taking weekly lessons for almost 2 years now with a great teacher, Don Worth of Portland, OR who has some open slots for new students if anyone is interested. He has a funny story about Michael renting equipment out of his Dad's drum shop; he showed up on a warm summer day in a fur coat but he was cool! 😎
An incredibly talented and artistic drummer. I’ve spent hundreds of hours over the years practicing to his recordings with Santana and in particular the Santana III album. It’s simply stunning!
I have been jamming “Soul Sacrifice” since when it came out in 1968. On UA-cam, I have been jamming with the Woodstock version every day for the last 15 years! Love the Drum Solo Michael Shrieve performed at Woodstock!
The Woodstock footage of Soul Sacrifice is one of my Favorite music videos. It was exciting, multiracial band in the 60's making universal music that gave Pop Music Dignity.
I used to hang out with Michael at Privates in New York back in the day. He explained how he felt that his bass drum was the earth and his cymbals were the sky. Great guy:)
My first concert was The Miami Rock Festival December 28th 1969. I didn’t know who was playing . I was just thrilled to be there. My luck the first band was Santana. I was totally blown away. The next band to play was The Band. What a great night of music for a 15 year old.
I had the honor of jamming with Michael in Nevada City Calif when I was playing bass in the Salsa Band there....great drummer...was an honor to have that chance...that was 83 I believe and Michael was still a skinny dude back then.....looks pretty comfortable here! Thanks for sharing
One year later 08/18/70 after Woodstock Santana played at Tanglewood....The full concert is on UA-cam....Large screen and loud sound system is advised. Strong check it out.
In 1980-81 at a rehearsal studio in Manhattan where we were rehearsing for our album, Micheal was also rehearsing there with Novo Combo. We just all jammed and it was such an honor for me. Michael is a shy fellow but shines on the drums.
Greatest Santana show ever with Michael is the band at Great Woods Tanglewood in Massachusetts in 1970. Michael is killer in this show. Available here on UA-cam. Great audio and video quality.
Taste and technique are what its all about on any instrument and Shrieve has both to the extreme. More than what you know, how it comes across, how it affects the listener is everything in music. I would call him a happy technician. ... chops forever! Saw him close up at a Louisiana festival and I'm having fun remembering how spellbinding he was. The Iron Butterfly drummer did a similar solo too but Santana featured the other percussionists and the Latin thing is big around New Orleans.
An honor to be in the same stage with Santana I’m honored just to own one of his PRS se edition guitar it’s his first PRS that he used with the yellow and black pickups . I only play his music on that guitar. That’s the honest truth
I knew about Michael S, when he performed with Santana at Woodstock. Good looking young man with phenomenal drum skill. Years later i found an album which he had recorded with the Japanese musician named Tsutomu Yamashita, Steve Winwood .... (if not wrong, the band called Go, i think i still have the vinyl(?) May be you can find it in YTube) which is quite a progressive rock album. Great Michael is still doing well in music. He left a deep impression in my head, even after all these years. Peace out !
My story’s too long to tell but I met Michael when I was 16 and he must have been 17! We hung out when he play with Santana at my HS in Danville/ Walnut Creek California Pre first album
...before michael joined carlos in s.f., he was in a local band in santa clara, called the "tumbling titanics"...pat crabtree played drums then, and michael played guitar i think...back in '66 or so.....
Yep , Woodstock . THE BEST . You guys were on FIRE . It was not a front guy and a backup band . It was a group of fellow space travelers flying through the cosmos at the speed of sound .
Nice to hear this story from the horses mouth! Inspired by Santana's performance at Woodstock, I actually played an outdoor concert in RI, opening with Soul Sacrifice. We had a very capable drummer and had the crowd on their feet, thanks to the popularity of that song. As a guitar player, I never got the chance to meet Santana but another star of the Woodstock concert by the name of Jimi Hendrix. Shaking his hand was a memorable experience and I believe I still channel his essence when on stage. I have since opened for Johnny Cash and Sammy Davis Jr and shared the stage with Merle Haggard, The Dramatics and The Pointer Sisters. The tour goes onward.
I listen to super sessions all the time. Never did I think Michael Shrieve sat in on that. Great story and now I enjoy the tracks more. Bloomfield didn’t show up one day. It was then I gained respect for stills guitar playing.
I met him while he played with the mostly original lineup of Santana in Allentown ,Pa on 4/17/2016 when the originals opened up for the current lineup , then the current lineup opened for Journey. I got a picture with him and I had all the original guys sign the newly released Santana IV Vinyl. They were all super cool guys
@@donaldbowehr Nah, I'm not on Facebook. I'm good friends with the Santana guys, especially Karl Perazzo and Paoli Mejias. I've known Karl for almost 30 years and Paoli for 17. I was close with the late Raul Rekow too. I'm a guitar player from the Philadelphia area and thru Karl, I was able to meet my hero Carlos Santana many times .
The sound and sight of this young man..at the time..of Santana on stage at Woodstock..playing Soul Sacrifice..ooh the heart and soul of this amazing drummer 🥁.. "This must be heaven man!" ✌️❤️🌹
Hes one of my all time best drummers,no doubt.... Santana band, with him and Carabello y Chepito Areas were the best drum section in the world... always thought what would have happened with Hendrix playing with the Santana band...
The coolest and one of the greatest rock drummers in the history of rock. Michael does not get enough mention in conversations...but he's as great as Bonham for sure.
It was Woodstock 94 I was working it with Ace audio visual my friend Louie Appel was going to do a musical tribute to Jimi Hendrix and needed drums to play we were on the south stage we asked the cranberries can we use your drums so we could do a musical tribute to Jimi Hendrix they said no the next band on was zucchero with Michael shreve on drums we asked Michael if we could use your drums so we could do a musical tribute to Jimi Hendrix Michael says no problem so thanks to Michael shreve great guy !!!!!!!!

One of the only drum solos I've ever liked, Toad (Ginger Baker) and Moby Dick are the 2 others.

...before michael joined carlos in s.f., he was in a local band in santa clara, called the "tumbling titanics"...pat crabtree played drums then, and michael played guitar i think...back in '66 or so.....
Good Rock N Roll trivia ! Thanks for the view !
Yep , Woodstock . THE BEST . You guys were on FIRE . It was not a front guy and a backup band . It was a group of fellow space travelers flying through the cosmos at the speed of sound .
LOL ! Thanks for the view !
Indeed! Very well said in a nutshell!
Have always loved this guy. Combo Novo? anyone?
Thanks for viewing
Michael's story of his entrance to the "party" is astounding!!!
Thanks for the view Joanne!
Great story...Thanks for the view !
I listen to super sessions all the time. Never did I think Michael Shrieve sat in on that. Great story and now I enjoy the tracks more. Bloomfield didn’t show up one day. It was then I gained respect for stills guitar playing.
Thanks for the view!
Phenomenal.
Glad you liked it !
Sounds fun Luis ! Aren't you in the San Francisco Music group on Facebook ?
@@donaldbowehr Nah, I'm not on Facebook. I'm good friends with the Santana guys, especially Karl Perazzo and Paoli Mejias. I've known Karl for almost 30 years and Paoli for 17. I was close with the late Raul Rekow too. I'm a guitar player from the Philadelphia area and thru Karl, I was able to meet my hero Carlos Santana many times .
I'm going to be posting Part 2 of the interview soon, so stay tuned.......
@@LuisMorales-xr1gm im in phila area also we should talk...have many santana stories from my sf days
I'm about an hour north of Philly. I'm cool with the whole band past and present members since like 95.
I first heard of him when he was with Novo Combo back in the day, very solid drummer.

The coolest and one of the greatest rock drummers in the history of rock. Michael does not get enough mention in conversations...but he's as great as Bonham for sure.
