Setting up Midi Controllers in Reason with a twist

  • Setting up more than one Midi Controller and setting up the same controller twice (or 3 or 4 times)
    Note: when you are not using them you should turn them off, if they are pointing to the same device when recording you will get short notes recorded (you could also create an empty dummy combinator and lock the extra ones to that).

    Thanks for the video
    I use my Jupiter xm as a midi controller ok for Reason synths but i cannot for the life of me configure Reason so i can also use the Jupiter as a stand alone synth with in the same project. Its frustrating the life out of me.
    Ive watched so many tutorials but can't figure it out, nothing works.
    Any help is very welcome. Thanks

      To use it as a midi controller you "just" (OK it's not that that simple) need to setup it up as a standard "other" Midi Keyboard no controls, to start with (lets get the basic's working then lets work on getting the knobs to do something :) ) , now if you are on Windows you might have to setup something like loopmidi first to connect the Jupiter XM to, please see my Beginners guide to settings up a loopback. ua-cam.com/video/kv3_PNCO9Eo/v-deo.html

      Is this on a Nektar KB? Are you having issues after you tried setting it up more than once?

    I don't have those lovely settings to lock devices when I right click, was it removed in Reason 11?

    • @PoohBearsReasonChannel
      @PoohBearsReasonChannel  3 роки тому

      No, they are still there and it still works, I lock devices a lot..
      This is an old video and I now recommend using the player device Midi CV Converter for playing multiple instruments at the same time. It appears in a lot of my video's.

      @@PoohBearsReasonChannel Cool thanks. I'll look at the Midi CV, turns out there's a few settings in preferences you need to jiggle in order for the lock setting to become available in the dropdown. Basically you need to make sure no one device is set as the master. Thanks

    Hi poobear, tried adding my keyboard as a second keyboard, got warning triangle s saying they are using same midi Ch.
    But got strange midi data when recording a lead line, the midi notes were very short even though as I played it I held the notes, only way to correct this error was to delete the second keyboard that I had setup. !!??

    • @PoohBearsReasonChannel
      @PoohBearsReasonChannel  6 років тому

      Yes it is using the same midi channel and you will get that triangle, I should have said something about that, on another video (External instruments one I think) I did point this out. I should have also pointed out not to lock to a device and also make that device the master as you gain over 6db, now back to your short notes, I have seen this before, can't remember what sorted it out. Did you restart Reason and or you controller after adding it? (as this would have been something I try).. What midi controller are you using?

      @@PoohBearsReasonChannel Did you ever combine this with AutoHotKey so you can have a hotkey for each controller? Theoretically, you could then just go to an instrument track, and then hit a hotkey on whatever device down the audio chain to give you control over it while your keybed is still on the source device.

    Has anyone figured out how to map/control 3rd party vst with nektar lx61+! shift move vst parameter, then move controller knob or slider doesn't seem to work since there last update! But works no problem on RE! An with all the RE that are out you'd think that nektar would be rolling out updates! :(
    Feel like I've been duped, lol

      You can just update the mapping file, I have just had a look at the mapping file and I believe there is also away to have more that just 2 banks. I'm currently reviewing the new T series and it looks like it shares the same mappings so keep an eye on my Nektar section as I will be updating that this week. ua-cam.com/play/PLACW3Ualj800k3yu7sLQ1Tt8SPCkG1an2.html

    Hi poobear, my keyboard is a Kawai K4, I didn't think of restart with the short note issue.

    So tired of youtubers talking about what they're going to show me for 5 minutes and then briefly doing the thing and saying it's "straightforward." No it's not.

    • @PoohBearsReasonChannel

      Locking your different controllers to different devices is straightforward and I showed it very clearly and under 2 minutes, in the 2nd part of the video I go over very clearly how to set up the same keyboard twice (or 3 times) and why you might want to do that.
