- It's the last Kim Justice video of the year! Today we have a look at a range of the best games for the Amstrad CPC, both old and new. Just had a look, I'm already subscribed to all of them lol. I love that there's like this UA-cam community for British retro gaming youtubers who all know each other and feature in each others videos. It's a bit like the breadtube community, there's probably a bit of crossover with that too. The best breadtuber, Hbomberguy, did that 78 hour stream of donkey kong 64 for trans rights and AOC called in to the stream. What a legend he is

@@Xyphoe You have +1 subscriber :-) . Gaming history in your part of the world is much more interesting. Prior to the Genesis / Megadrive we had the bulletproof Atari 2600 and then the malfunctioning lockout chip crippled badly designed blinking light NES and then...well that was about it actually.

I never had a CPC, but I am a huge Amiga fan. Colour me impressed by the conversion of Pinball Dreams - it genuinely looks so close as to replicate the original faithfully. Excellent!

I got an Amstrad 464+ for Christmas in 1990 and I can still remember how excited I was. So many hours spent playing Burnin’ Rubber. Playing Dizzy, Seymour, collecting these Codies Quattro tapes. Doing the type ins from Amstrad Action. A simpler, happier time.

And ermmmm sorry about the change of game, I didn't know you had already started on it! I chose Xyphoe's Fantasy I think because it kinda sums up the Amstrad in a lot of ways ... we (Amstrad fans) were always looking for that killer game to show off to our Speccy/C64 chums, and along comes this one with stunning presentation, graphics, music etc ... but then you actually play it and .... URGHHH! Always so close to proving to our mates that it's a great machine, then falling down at a critical point which could be picked apart. That's why I jokingly chose this character and name :) But it's taken till this decade we're still just about in for amazing homebrew to come out to *really* push the system and have something to stand up and say 'HEY! Check THIS out!'
@@Xyphoe 's Fantasy was a bit to slow too. For CPC games to impress when scrolling the hardware scroll has to be used. A 16 kB screen is too much to move around for the Z80. Even the Atari ST struggles moving its 32 kB screen around and the Atari ST uses a Motorola 16 bit 68000 running at 8 MHz
@@dartsma464 Yea there are many other Amstrad games that have better scrolling. Still this is decent, it's more impressive for its graphics/presentation/music.

I've always considered the Amstrad to have the best palette out of the common 8-bit micros. Games are just pleasant to look at!
I'm a bit surprised that Get Dexter didn't make the list. Very creative, lots of interaction with the characters environment. I remember being very much entertained by that one (on the atari st port), even if I had no idea what I was supposed to do back then.
At last, DR DESTRUCTO! My second favourite game on the Amstrad CPC464, at last getting the love it deserves! Close joint 3rd being Fast Food Dizzy/Phycho Pigs UXB and 1st Target Renegade.

I saw a CPC twice in my life - the first time played Wonder Boy, and the second time Silkworm. Love this video - a great chance to see what the platform was all about.
My first computer was a CPC 6128. I loved it and when games were made specifically for it rather than lazily ported from the Spectrum they could be impressive indeed. It was also the best of the 8-bit micros at running those early 3D games.

That conversion of pinball dreams looks absolutely amazing for an 8bit micro. Credit to the developers on that one. Also to you Kim for another excellent vid. All the best for 2020.
Prince of Persia started life on another popular 8-bit, the Apple 2. At least a popular machine for US viewers
Apple II was one of the first personal computer known in France as it was used in computer clubs. Apple IIe and IIc became kind of popular (considering their prices..) and still were at the end of the 80's. Videogames were imported from the US and were so expensive that France had its first video games crackers already in 1983 (whom some of them later create first demos for the Apple II and Apple IIgs). Other interesting fact, Eric Chahi who wrote "Another World" in his bedroom in the early 90's, was a big fan of Jordan Mechner, creator or Karateka and Prince of Persia. He was really inspired by Mechner's rotoscoping techniques.
Also to end with that, The Amstrad CPC was very popular in France (Apple II, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST and Oric Atmos were beloved by french developpers in the 80's). By the way, Prince of Persia on the CPC was made by a french company, Microïds.

The Batman Group should be careful with releasing games like Pinball Dreams and Vespertino. Some C64 users might get angry
My parents bought an Amstrad from the local Co-op Shopping Giant, around 1986. Spent ages typing code in, to get the screen to flash, or my name to scroll across, whilst not really having a clue what I was actually doing. Fantastic memories of a six year old.
Awesome video and I like the idea of bringing people with more experience in. I'm also not too familiar with the computer but I was blown away by some of the visuals in these games. An excellent and diverse selection.
The Amstrad CPC was also very popular in France, which might be one of the reasons that Prince of Persia was converted by a french company, Microïds.
My three would have been Sorcery, Ikari Warriors and Yie Ar Kung-Fu, all three blew my speccy and C64 mates away at the time and were great games to play.

The CPC was rather good for programming thanks to its built-in Locomotive basic.
and great manual and a dedicated monitor with a screens size of 40 or 80 characters across helped a lot too. Some of us even added an assembler in ROM.. The typical ROM-box had room for 8 ROMs and made available wordprocessor, assembler, utilities, better DOS and other software available. This could be used within a second after turning the machine on. I think this was common for the BBC too
I still have my old 6128 in my attic - I never really took to it like the Spectrum, and C64, and, later, Amiga. Probably because I mostly only used the CPC for Pascal programming when I was in college. I had the colour monitor, which I ended up converting to be a JAMMA arcade PCB test rig. It's amazing to see Pinball Dreams on it though! Imagine if that had come out in the 80's!

With all the copied tapes, we still seem to have very different game collections in the CPC 464 days. Whereas pretty much everyone had the same games later on the Amiga.
Pinball Dreams is just nuts. It's like it came from an alternate dimension.
Like DJ Slope I had a CPC. It was a disk based 664 as opposed to the tape basded 464, (I had a separate tape deck t orun cassettes) before moving on to a Megadrive. I'm only chirping up here as literally none of my favourite Amstrad games were mentioned here. A T F Advanced Tactical Fighter was briefly featured in your earlier Amstrad video. I played that game to death and can still remember the day that the side I was on finally won an entire war. You mentioned 180 on your Codemasters video, that was one of the first CPC games I ever picked up and was hours of fun as was ATV Simulator and Professional Ski Simulator. A massively underated footy game I first played on a friend's Spectrum was Emlyn Hughes Soccer, I loved it and picked up a very tight CPC version and it was one of the best footy games I had on the system. There were 2 platform games not mentioned here that I played above all others, Star Quake ,which I think you have covered before and arguably the greatest CPC platformer, Rick Dangerous 2. RD2 was one of the most all rounded games I ever had on my CPC and compared very well to an Amiga version I played later. A final one I would like to mention that is more of an amusing distraction is the licence game of Trap Door where you play as Berk and and with the help of Boney the skull and the little spider (can't remember his name off hand) you had to gather ingredients to make meals to serve to the booming voice upstairs, it always made me smile :o). I have enjoyed your documentaries on the old micros, keep up the good work.
Ghostbusters 2 is the first Amstrad game I ever completed and was a firm fav. However, my overall fav was Gauntlet.
Back in the day, I remember looking at the CPC as a possible first computer but got a Speccy for Xmas instead which, to be fair, I never regretted. But the CPC had such a unique look to it that I can see why it attracted people.
I think the tragedy of the CPC in many ways is that not enough quality came out quickly enough to mark it as a serious contender in a field where the Spectrum and C64 had such a stranglehold. Had the games been of the sort of quality that these examples showed more frequently, the CPC might have emerged the king.
I am, like many others, in absolute awe of the CPC conversion of Pinball Dreams, being someone who still regularly plays the Amiga version. The coders deserve all the praise they are getting for their accomplishment. Makes me wonder though, if they kept the screen monochrome and tightened the graphics to compensate, what a Spectrum 128K version would look like or indeed what the Spectrum Next could do with it.
An important question: is the ZX Spectrum able to move this amount of graphics in mono fast enough. Criteria, coded by the best coders available. Is the machine that powerful?
@@dartsma464 I would say yes, it is. It has the same processor as the CPC and the same sound chip. The Speccy is noted for the ability to do high res graphics and move them around at a good speed. Yes it needs talented coders on them to get the very best out of the computer (same as with all micros tbh) but it is more than capable.
so for me I think a mono version of Pinball Dreams would work. It would lose a lot for not having the colours but in terms of speed and graphical fidelity I think it will handle it as well as the CPC can.
Ronnie Bradley I don’t think the problem is the quality or quantity of games : the major publishers all did CPC ports of each game and it was often the best of the three 8-bits. I think it was overlooked in the UK because of the Speccy craze that had already taken place, but overall the CPC was anything but a tragedy : it was the best selling micro in France, and worldwide it sold 3 million units vs the Spectrum’s 5 million. Nothing to sneer at !
Ronnie Bradley Also, remember that the CPC had 3 graphics mode, it could also high res (the 4 colour mode 1 was the one used for speccy ports). Some really nice ports like Iron Lord took advantage of it
@@renaudg I didn;t sneer at it. I like the CPC a lot. Given its specs it should ahve been more successful in the UK on that score but as you say the Speccy was already well entrenched at that point.
I never owned an Amstrad CPC so it is nice to see the gameplay footage. I do think the Amstrad may be the nicest option for 8 bit home micros all round; but I have to say that I did not think the scrolling on Tornado Low level was particularly smooth. No offence meant as there are clearly lots of great games (and the scrolling in Xyphoe seemed smoother), but there is no way that scrolls as smoothly as a C64...
I think TLL is really smooth when flying diagonial at max speed. Not so smooth at slow speed. If the game had been written today, they would have doublebuffered it and that would have made the graphics smooth at slow speeds too. The first game that used this was Mission Genocide in 1987. Written by Paul Shirley who also wrote Spindizzy
This certainly makes me want to pull out the Schneider and give those games a go! :)
My favourite CPC games were the Magic Knight series . Knight Tyme being my favourite .
This is a great video, hearing from the guests, with their opinions on their favourite Amstrad games, and then hearing your take on the game gives it a great two reviewer style look at the game, like some of the early gaming magazines. Love it, hope to see more in this series.
Did you know that many of those magazine reviews were fake, they had only one person writing the 2-3 people reviews
dartsma464 yeah. I guessed as much. But it was alway great to get “different” viewpoints on the same game.
I loved it back in the days. I was shocked when one of the writers in Amstrad Users posted in one of the forums a few years ago telling that he wrote the reviews for all 3 persons.

Thank you Kim. I grew up with an Amstrad, wrote code - the CPC version of BASIC was brilliant, possibly the best ever. I'm sad I no longer have my Amstrad, not sure what my parents did with it. It was meant to be an XMAS present when I was about 12 (I am now 46) for me, my brother and my sister. I then took control of it, as I said, wrote code even and always loved it. My school friends mostly had Spectrums and many arguments were had. I insisted the better graphics and sound were worth sacrificing lower scrolling speed for. They were for a lot of games, but not all obviously. I loved my CPC.
I adored my Amstrad. Imagine that remake of Pinball Dreams coming out back at the machines height! It would have blown my mind.

I agree. However, with that said, I can say the same thing for the Beeb, Criminally underrated as a gaming computer. Afterall, without the Beeb, we wouldn't have Elite.
@@ACanOfBakedBeans and several good car games too. I enjoyed most of the ports the Amstrad got from the BBC. I believe most of these originated on the BBC: Thrust, Killer Gorilla, Chuckie Egg, 3D Grand Prix

Might need to look into the Amstrad too - was aware of the love for it from the homebrew pages of retro gamer magazine

I started off gaming with the Amstrad, had a lot of games, or I thought I got a lot of games, and NEVER played any of the ones mentioned in this video. My best Amstrad games would be (in no order): Bruce Lee, Elite, Oh Mummy, Harrier Attack, Roland on the Ropes, Contra, Chase HQ, The Eidolon, Star Wars, Total Eclipse and Im sure I have forgotten a lot more.
Other fantastic Amstrad ports for a future video : Gryzor, Chase HQ, Operation Wolf, Rainbow Islands, Dragon Ninja, Renegade, Barbarian, Double Dragon, Bombjack, all Rafaelle Cecco games ( Cybernoid II, Stormlord, Exolon), on the French side Skweek (an 8 bit exclusive), Titus the fox, Get Dexter, Teenage Queen...
Homebrew games : Operation Alexandra, Orion Prime and the incredible upcoming ports of Toki and Sonic !

@@user-yv2cz8oj1k It's interesting as a foreigner too read comments like this. In Norway we never had nobility or classes the same way as in Britain so its a whole different world. Still they were good computers no matter who could afford them or not.
Thanks for another great video, but one small complaint. If you're going to tell us how great the sound/music is, could you give is a little 10 second blast between the commentary please.
I remember back in school I would play a type of space racer that you would race on a pipe but go too fast it would throw you off in to space if you were on the outside of the pipe on the turn. and for the life of me I can't seem to remember its name, it was either on the BBC or Amstrad maybe amiga back in rhe 1990s.
Baba's Palace seems to be a remake of sorts of Catrap for the original Game Boy. That in itself is a version of a game called Pitman, but it looks like the same stuff with a new coat of paint.

I used to love Game Over, Game Over 2 and Saboteur in particular - and NOMAD gets a shout for being a fun oddity.
The reds and blues in the CPC were particularly beautiful.

Some of these might not work on a 64k machine..
Baba's Palace is a total Catrap clone, which is an early gameboy game, but with Dragonball lookalikes instead of cat people
And Catrap on gameboy also let you rewind time, way way before Sands of Time made it popular

Who dares wins 2 isn't really flick screen, just that port is. And I think you can progress without killing all the soldiers in a screen. Except, of course, the final one each outpost has. :)

My first proper pooter was a CPC464. The arguments between CPC users and C64 used to make me laugh when I was a mere kidlette. Wish I owned both of them nowadays !

a patched version of Paperboy adds the missing music
The Amstrad R-type remake is certainly good but you can't really call it the best 8-bit version of the game. That honor goes to the Sega Master System version which was made by Compile and actually rivals the Pc-Engine version.

This is Catrap. Or rather, this is Catrap if Catrap had Dragon Ball’s story.
I played so many games on the Amstrad CPC plus, can't recall if it was the 464 plus or the 6128 plus. My mum had bought it for helping with her college studies when she decided to go to college in the 1990s. She got the computer in late 1989.
We had a lot of games for it like Burning Rubber, several Dizzy games, R-Type 1, Arkanoid and so many others as well as so many demo tapes. Sadly two games we had didn't work very well, a Dungeons And Dragons game we had would take two to three hours to load only to crash before it could be played while another game which was more of a text adventure set in an underwater base would crash after a few minutes of loading.
It was an alright system, basic and a pain to play games on but it was alright for the time.

I was a diehard Speccy fanboy as a kid but must admit a little cognitive dissonance when my friend invited me over to play Jack the Nipper on his Amstrad after school once.
As an aside, as one of those few people who did own a Sam Coupe, I only played the demo of Prince of Persia but, as far as I recall, it played very well. This reminds me I should probably try to reclaim said Sam from my mother's loft. It'd probably be more appreciated these days.

Played the hell out of Who Dares Wins II on the C64 as a kid (I'm Canadian, so Amstrads and Spectrums weren't really a thing here), but this looks awesome.
Thing is I've not needed to go back to the 8 bit age, many terrible games we put up with because we didn't have any choice, and I now have powerful machines and a pandora's box 6 which is just starting to get hacked for new classic arcade game selections.

Re Prince of Persia - the apple II is an 8 bit computer so there are 2 machines you an experience it on. Love the video as like yourself I did not experience this machine at all in the 80's and in fact first touched one at Blackpool Retro Expo this year!
The Apple 2 version is really amazing considering the 1977 hardware it is running on

I had an Amstrad CPC 464. I don't remember being excited about anything Amstrad related games. Each to their own I guess.
I loved tornado low level on the spectrum but it never gets talked about, I've tried finding it on world of spectrum but nothing
My C64 Ghostbusters 2 tape would never load level 2. I even took it back to John Menses to get it replaced, which also didn't load level 2.

I played a version of that 'Electro freddy' game on BBC micro, except it had the less subtle name of 'Uncle Claude'
A fair few of the early CPC games originated on the BBC. Many of them were good. There may have been even more BBC ports if they had used the same CPU. They did use the same graphic chip

They were sold in Chicago for a very short time, 1985. Not sure if they were labelled Amstrad or Indescomp there
Because Alan Sugar thought it was way too risky to try breaking in America.
Im have followered a long time another youtuber "battle of the ports". Its seens Amstrad is a under powered machine, and its often got very slow laungable ports (Amiga also often have same fate to, due direct Atari St ports).
But there is sometimes very surpricely good ports as well. Shinobi example is a great one.
Another game im like to point out is "Dragon Attack". This is one of the most cleanest bullet hell game im have seen on a 8bit machine (im is not fan of this kind of game). Im simply like the style how that game has been executed. Brilliant.
Tornado Low Level is sadly a bad example for multi direction scrolling tech. The game has a jecky tile based scrolling all the place (does not look good when flying slow). A much better example would been Batman the Movie. The amstrad version is quite cool here.
Tornado LL looks way better on the CPC than on the C64.
