Original song by Jon Hoekstra. I was feeling down so I put that energy into writing a cheerful-sounding song about a mopey old bear. Turned a black emotional cloud into a friend, which is kinda true.
If you didn’t know me, might think I’m a man about town
Might even be a big-time country star
From the looks of me, you’d guess I was tom-cattin’ around
Spending all my hard-earned nights down at the bar
But I’ve got this bear, he’d follow me anywhere
But he’d rather sit at home, pop a little corn, and turn the TV on
Yes I’ve got this bear, sometimes it’s more than he can do to cry
So he picks a country blues, hums a little tune, sounds a bit like Trouble in Mind
And it’s true, I’m a bona fide dancin’ fool,
But that bear, he just shuffles so bashfully
I tell him there’s no need to try at being cool
I mean, all I’ve got to do is act naturally
And you know that bear, he never knows what to say
A born Rank Stranger, a High Lonesome kinda guy
That’s not me, I can bend anyone my way
And I could have beaucoup friends in places low and high

I say why bother when peace of mind is free?
I put my full faith and credit in Lady Luck
She always smiles on easy-going guys like me
That bear’s half a ton of bone and blood and grease,
Used to lean on alcohol, but the bottle let him down
Half the night he walks the floor with those big trash-can lid feet
Nothing seems to work these days, except singin’ sad old songs
