Great video. I love Art Deco. As a kid visiting my Grandparents in London during the 1950s, I always looked out for the black cats whilst on the top deck of the bus from Muswell Hill. Not on this video, but the Hoover factory further west also impressed me. I am not an architect, but I appreciate beautiful buildings. Excellent presentation, Katrina.
Thank you, loved that. I had the privilege of visiting St Olaf House when it was the offices of the now defunct firm Bacon & Woodrow. It's as lovely on the inside as outside.
The Phoenix is in my area so I'm familiar with it. Most of the rest, I've been to dozens of times but never noticed anything special about them and I appreciate a nice building. I'm a Brutalist and Gothic kind of girl when it comes to buildings though, so...
Londonist it's great to see you back! What would it take to present one of these videos, I'm a Londoner myself full of passion and excitement for my city, hit me up lool! Also, I wish you hadn't restricted the Art Deco tour to just stops on the Northern Line, you showed Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, but I think the Rio in Dalston would have been a more glorious example, and a quick bus to Holloway would have greeted you with both the gorgeous, newly restored Odeon Luxe and a short walk down Holloway Road you also have The Coronet with its classic Art Deco architecture and typography for the logo. Perhaps a part 2 is in order?
Wow! I subscribed to this channel about a year ago kind of as a legacy subscription and what a pleasant surprise to see the name in my sub box. Very nice video greetings from Paris.
4:44 Interesting. I live in city (Norrköping) whose coat of arms (and ”patron saint”) is St Olof (as we spell his name in Swedish). But his attributes in the coat of arms, and in the statues I’ve seen in churches (Vadstena and Risinge) are an open crown, sometimes a sceptre, an orb, and always an axe (since apparently he was killed in battle by an axe). What’s with the sword and the stick he has on the wall there? 🤔😏
Napier city NZ..was largely destroyed in early Feb 1931,,,firstly by the devastating earthquake which raised what is now the airport by 2 metres...then by the fire which destroyed so much. The business centre and many homes were rebuilt in the Art Deco style and most of these remain--check out the Napier Art Deco Festival held around this time..Feb ever non-Covid year :-)
The entrance to The Savoy, is the only place in the U.K where you can drive on the right hand side of the road. Also, all Hackney Cabs have a turning circle of only 25 ft (8 m). It is alleged this is because the Savoy Hotels small turning circle outside its entrance
ohh londonist is back! time to see if the cat building opposite mornington crescent made it in! edit: YES IT DID! 🥳 shame they failed to mention that for the grand opening of the carreras tobacco factory, they filled the road in front of it with sand and held ben hur style chariot races up n down hampstead rd!
I'm not sure you're correct about St Olaf protecting London. He was a Viking raider himself, but led significant Christianisation of Norway. Later Vikings brought his cult to England.
Londonist, I've missed you! Are you planning to do more of the Art Deco architecture videos? Maybe West London, The Gillette Factory? P.S. Every time I see an Art Deco house I think of Poirot
London is truly for the artist!!! ❤ I love my time here, and one of the favorite things to do is to shop around in the city’s art supplies shops. Some of my top hops this season ua-cam.com/users/shortsNmAdFKvUaCo?feature=shared
Thank you very much for this video. More would be appreciated. Best wishes
The return of Londonist! It has been 2 years! Happy to see you all back!
A similar video with Brutalist Architecture being the focus would be great.
As an architect, I LOVE these types of videos. Welcome back! We missed you.
😊
Glad to see Londonist is still with us. And what a return. I love Art Deco!

Great video...many thanks. I'll try to visit these, especially Carrera's; I never knew that existed.
Same tbh
Nice tour. One of my favourite art deco buildings is the Hoover building in Perivale.
Thank you so much for this video. I enjoyed every second.
How beautiful these places are. Felt like I was there. Kudos!!!
This was great. Thanks for the art deco tour! :)

Wow the Londonist is back!
2:00 black cat you also see in the Craven cigarettes logo, no doubt the most famous Carreras' staple.
Isn't that legendary Instagram art deco personality Art Deco Bimbo? I think I've met her before, a lovely lady
Are there coming more London underground videos?
That was a good video. I can imagine how great it would be with a presenter with screen presence and personality.
They’re back!
Yay there posting again
☺

Very interesting Katrina, keep up the great work, did you win? 😀
A new Londonist video? Had to do a double take there for a second!
You forgot the Art Deco stations and the iconic Shell Mex House next door to the Savoy.
What ho Londonist! IIRC Senate House is also used heavily in the Jeeves and Wooster tv series
