Try an old project of mine, Cave Story Redesign. I lost the files for it so I never finished it. One of the principals I went by was nonlinearity. There's a bunch of ways to sequence break I built into it.
a mod like this already exists, kind of, look up Cave "No" Story. though it doesn't have any new locations of the sort. you could also try something like Doukutsu Randamu i'm out of ideas
Holy shit, 17 minutes. Iteration 7 definitely seems more game-like that most other iterations we’ve seen, based on the fact it has some enemies appearing sparsely. Then again, some really early iterations also had a good amount of enemies, and as the iterations got closer to the release build of cave story they seemed to be used less and less. I have to wonder the purpose of these enemies, as to me that makes these iterations seem like an elaborate fan-game or mod. What would transferring to different iterations do in the case that this is a fan-game, though? Considering how rough the generation was in some earlier versions, the idea of this being a fan-game doesn’t make sense. The description is similar to the titles of the previous 3 test recordings, indicating to me that this video is human-recorded rather than machine-recorded. Also, does it seem like to anyone else that the level geometry changed right at the end?
i tried counting the tiles and it seems that the platform the player lands on at the end is somewhere around 27 tiles away from that hightened point a few blocks to the right of the door. the block the player jumps off of at the very end is 59 tiles away from that same point so they would have to have fallen 32 tiles. it feels like they've fallen less so the platform they land on is a couple blocks higher but that might just be because there's no point of reference as they're falling
Interesting how the key items, despite being seemingly random cut outs from a sprite sheet, still have a name that (broadly yet accurately) fits the "art". Image classification?
I may be wrong, but I'm not sure we've iteration 7 before now, if that is indeed what the filename is referring to. Also, those items are... interesting, and seem to be a new occurrence, which supports the idea that this is a later iteration. It's been a while since I watched the other videos, though, so I could be wrong.
It is strange how this is a recording from 2011. The date in the video’s description is the same format as the observer’s videos, which means it’s likely recorded by them. But that is doesn’t make sense: how can the observer record things in the past? Perhaps I’m overthinking
i think it's rather that it was recorded using the same program the observer used to record their videos, so it makes sense that it would have a similar naming scheme
May be a bit late, but Connection 2 also had this same naming system, which was recorded on April 4th, 2011. paper_eleven_violet wasn't though, and that was recorded on January 11th, 2011, so it may have changed between those two videos. ...Actually, I'm starting to notice a pattern of repeating numbers here. Even this video went on for 17:17 and was Iteration 7... Strange.
I may be overthinking but...one of the only enemies present being the baby dragons that must fight seconds after being born? The fact that in Cave Story's full release only one of them (the only one to hatch without deformities) is allowed to live? That might have some level of thematic connection to a bunch of questionably sentient computer programs birthed to generate levels for a video game.
Yes, but most likely it's already generated when the player enters the locations. To open both shields (not the first one that is opened with the black keycard) the player had to backtrack and/or explore sections of rooms they have already been in but have previously ignored.
This fortress seems like it needs a team... or two.
Oh my god
TF2 MENTION ❗❗

Sounds are so relaxing❤

ooh da fortress bg is a copy of the level geometry, wonder if it was sourced from the in-game map but idk how this schtuff worx :V
It almost looks like a shadow, like it’s on stage or something

It's generating random shit for the purpose of lowering the shields?
