Why did she do this? Was she short of money or something?

Sadly, yes. Not for herself, but for her mother. Her mother was a manipulative force in her life until Madeline passed away at 57 in 1999. Her mom went ot live until 2012 or so with money that Madeline left to her. The mother was unstable and uncaring toward Madeline her whole life, as well as demanding for constant financial assistance once Madeline hit it big. She even "sued" Madeline for more financial assistance at one point. The more money Madeline made, the more successful she got, the more money her mother spent - extravagantly - and Madeline had to pay for it, or least, she felt she had to pay for it. Madeline was frugal with herself because of this. When Madeline was only 5 years old, her mother placed her in boarding school so she could pursue a entertainment career, which left with Madeline with anxiety and abandonment issues her whole life, in case your wondering why she didn't get tough with her mother and just say no. Her father left the unstable mother and re-married and wasn't there to support Madeline, nor did she have grandparents, so she only had her mom to connect with emotionally (and later a brother, but that was 12 or so years later). She was emotioanlly trapped when it came to her mother. So you see the beef commercial that is totally unbecoming of such a talented artist.
      #RIPMadelineKahn. We STILL miss you.

@@raraavis1984 WOW, that's really awful but not surprising. Many famous women had terrible narcissistic mothers: Karen Carpenter, Mariah Carey, Gilda Radner, Judy Garland. Thanks for the in-depth info about Madeline's mom, I was not aware it was that bad. They alluded to it in the Lifetime doc but wow.
