I saw Hitchcock start the show all alone with his interpretation of this very brilliant song in my hometown Oslo yesterday. It was moving, stunning, you name it. People actually totally shut up those minutes it lasted - the famous needle could have dropped and would have been heard thru the music. It was just fantastic, pure and simple. Wish I had a tape of it.
I've got to admit that the last thing I expected to see when clicking on Robyn Hitchcock covering a Bob Dylan song was Billy Bragg doing the intro! Awesome!
I remember seeing Billy Bragg open for Robyn Hitchcock in Philly in the early 90's. Fantastic night. Also remember seeing both of them playing at Mountain Stage in 1991? with R.E M. and Denis Bonet....that was an unforgettable road trip!
Indeed, these guys know what this song needs - very well done!! Both vocally, timing, rythm and guitar play - the melancholy of the mandolin underlines the essence of this Bob topper excellent.
JPJ has been into mandolin for a while now. The past several years he's been playing it and jamming with a lot of bands. I saw him at Bonnaroo playing with like 5 different bands.
"Behind every beautiful thing there's always some kind of pain." Truer words were never spoken. That line sounds even more poignant channeled through Robyn's supple, purring voice than in the overproduced original.
@Mntgoatsfan RH may not've written the song, but he sure did inhabit that performance. Full presence in every word, every note. Quiet and un-ignorable.
Help! JPJ carries a mandocello AND a mandolin onto & off the stage, but evidently, the song on which he uses the mandocello has been clipped here---anybody know what song that might be??
@warmjet ?? wha?? can you be specific about that? I know "that's why there's chocolate *and* vanilla," but I'm still curious what offends you about it. I'm genuinely interested, I'm not flaming. I'd give a JJ Cale cover a listen too.
only 25k views on this ? What is every body' afraid of - the dark :) ? This is an excellent read on Dylan's honest lines to mid to late life. Dylan's was good of course, but this might be just as good.

Historic moment!💕
Arresting delivery - pulls you in - you really hear the lyrics - great interpretation of a great song. Lovely playing too from Hitch and JPJ.
Go Robyn!! Have been listening since 84. You are awesome.
Every cover on this album is stellar.
Brilliant. The best interpretation of this classic, ever! Love Robyn Hitchcock. Thanks for posting.
What a load of shit .
paul griffin Fuck You .
+paul griffin
Are you THE Paul Griffin? Edit: You're not. He died in 2000. So your "load of shit" opinion is worthless.
Surpassed by Allison Moorer and Shelby Lynn.
I don't think so. Please listen to Severa Gjurin ... here on UA-cam .
This is perfect. So beautiful. Wow, Robyn at his best & with JPJ to boot! Bliss...
This is one of my favorite things ever.

First song this morning! Love it!🙏💛✌️

beautiful performance guys, thanks.
Great stuff Love Robin Hitchcock
Brilliant. No doubt the BEST Dylan cover ever. Thank you posting. Viva Robyn!
Holy shit, was that fucking amazing.
JPJ has been into mandolin for a while now. The past several years he's been playing it and jamming with a lot of bands. I saw him at Bonnaroo playing with like 5 different bands.
Why is it that sometimes the words of a songwriter hit home more when you hear them sideways from someone else?
Weird hearing a version of this song where you can understand the words. Nicely done.
Excellent !

Agreed. A great version - can't really add anything more. Thanks for posting.
Good cover real nice job 👍
simply lovely

Exelent awesome great!!
Happy Birthday Robyn :)
did he say john paul jones, as in Led Zeppelin.
Yes it's him!
that he did awesome hey
Is there any other?
@@iggypopisgod9 Yes, there is. When I Google "John Paul Jones", this one doesn't even make the first page of results despite his fame.
Wonderful....great
Great, great, great!!!!
First I hated it, then I loved it. Great cover.

thanks rob.
Was JPJ playing a mandolin or a mandocello?
Bob Dylan songs are sometimes better when you can hear the words.
Help! JPJ carries a mandocello AND a mandolin onto & off the stage, but evidently, the song on which he uses the mandocello has been clipped here---anybody know what song that might be??
dylan does it best
Gimme Jimmy LaFave's version any time.
@warmjet ?? wha?? can you be specific about that? I know "that's why there's chocolate *and* vanilla," but I'm still curious what offends you about it. I'm genuinely interested, I'm not flaming.

I had to do a 'double-take' there. I'd like to see that.
wow Robyn's a pretty good guitar player
not bad, but can't touch Jimmy Le Fave's version
Wow. Best Dylan cover EVER!

Truthfully,it's o/k.
I like this version even BETTER than Dylans. mandolin is exquisite
Well. That explains it, then.
Good cover but why mix up the lyrics for no good reason.
mandolin
11 Dylan fans have a narrow-world-view
Too bad about the Billy Bragg introduction, though.
whats wrong?
God is an Englishman.
thats zepplins bassist
n la luceon basta essermi espresso. prima, sono ok x che duri la luce solare.
It's hilariously melodramatic. Almost comedic or a parody of the song.
oui, exactement. t'es tellement limité que le mot "demeuré" ne s'y applique même pas
Agreed. Close to over the top. And the occasional flip of the hair in moptop's style seals the deal. Self-indulgence for sale.
what butchering of a great song.
wish jj cale would do a version.
one hopes butchers have found you since
