I've made a PVC on, and they're not that good. It's hard to fill. Condensation issues. They dont hold a lot of feed. 55 gallon drums are the way to go.
i installed same ports, on a large garbage can. i have 16 week old plymouth barred rock pullets. they are wasting like crazy. clean floor yesterday , filled feeder, and went in to about 10 lbs on the floor. so frustrating and expensive. i will raise the can up, higher, today. after watching your video, maybe that will makea difference.
Use pellets instead of crumble. You can get a large plastic water heater pan and put it under the can to catch any. Also, I have heard of people installing them backward and having the inside of the feeder on the outside, and that prevents waste as well. Good luck.
Love the amount of chickens you have. Hopefully one day i can get mine to multiply like this. With my area, i can't let my chickens roam like this as hawks are everywhere and would snatch my chickens up daily. I got my amazon feeders on the way and should be plenty for the 5 chickens i have.
I made one of these about a week ago. I'm using layer pellets for feed and they have been able to make a decent amount of waste still. I have mine on cinder blocks and 2x4s. I'm think it might be to high. How was the wasted feed with yours?
They did waste some, I just put the covers on and made them eat the waste. could get a water heater pan and put under the blocks, would help catch the waste.
They call it rat proof because you can put covers on the feeders at night to prevent mice from getting in your feed. If you have a problem with feed on the ground then just cover the holes and your chickens will eat what's available (on the ground). I don't have any feed waste with these feeders.

I found chickens can be on the picky side and the chickens pull out feed they don’t like and drop it on the ground and go back in the feeder to grab something they do like to eat. If you got enough chickens you might get lucky and have chickens that do like the feed that the other chickens dropped on the ground that will eat it too? Some seem to prefer eating off the ground anyway rather than eating out of their feeder. I have 3,feeders made by Coop Worx that you can put on 4 legs or on a short pole. Either way the feeders sit about 12”- 18” off the ground. Their supposed to be designed where chickens can’t waste their feed and that’s why I originally bought them. But like I mentioned, chickens do pull out feed and drop it on the ground if they don’t like the taste. Over time I tried to figure out what the chickens like to eat and what they don’t? So I have less waste. Learned pretty quickly my chickens don’t like pellets, they definitely prefer crumble! These feeders state mice or rats can’t get in the feeders, far as I know after 4 years using these and haven’t seen any signs of rodents in these feeders yet. But the feeder hole certainly large enough for rodents to get in the holes. I can only come up with the feeder holes being up in the air a foot high or more somehow keeps the rodents from finding the feed? Otherwise you’re guess is as good as mine what keeps the rodents out? I do have a feeder similar to yours except I made it out of a metal garbage can. Made the same problem you did and out the feeder holes too low. I also ended up having to sit the feeder on a chunk of 8”X8” wood I had laying around. If I made another one, I think I use the same plastic barrel you use. Only put some concrete inside the barrel at least 12” deep and then put the feeder holes up a little higher. Least then the barrel be more stable sitting right on the ground. ( I think?😂) Have smaller feeders inside my coop and the chickens will eat out of those either at night before roosting or will eat out of them when the weather outside is nasty. Chickens can free range though every day from sun up to sun down. Coop itself is 3 feet off the ground and it’s built with a covered run underneath the coop that extends out the front of the coop another 8 feet and it’s also 8 feet high all covered in hardware cloth with 2 screen doors on each side to get in to the run from either side. I did have a automatic door for the chickens to get in and out of the coop and the door closed at night to keep the chickens safe. Unfortunately the door stopped working after a few months. So I ended up taking the automatic door off and never got around to putting another door back on. So chickens come and go whenever they like. Haven’t had any problems yet with predators getting into the coop after 3 years so far. I have motion security lights around the coop, maybe that helps keep predators away? Regardless, just found a fancy automatic door for the coop that works with Bluetooth and wifi that I can control with my phone or computer. Still can be set on a timer or day/dusk settings. More complicated to set up, but I seem to enjoy playing around with gadgets like this. Started out with only 9 chickens, kept reading that you should build a larger coop then what you think you need. So I took that advice and built a 12’ X 12’ coop. Good thing I did too , since now I have 44 chickens and their population keeps growing every year! If you got a rooster, it’s only time till a hen finds a place to hide and sits on their eggs till the baby chicks are born. Was quite the surprise when a hen showed up one morning with 12 baby chicks in tow behind the hen! I’ve had 4 surprise times where I had anywhere between 3-12 chicks show up. Ended up having to make a maturity ward for the chicks in my garage that the baby chicks and mom hen can stay in till the hen decides on her own to leave the chicks to defend for themselves. Keep a brooder heater in a large container so the chicks got a place to stay warm. Doesn’t take long for the chicken population to grow once you get a rooster! Got several breeds of chickens and the babies are cross breeds of the chickens I originally started with. Had numerous roosters and had to get rid of several of them. Now I got another 6-7 roosters and need to get rid of a few of them now too! Shame to get rid of them though, they turned out to be gorgeous birds!
I started using these last week. Terrible waste happening. I have 17 turkeys about 2 months old. They use if just fine and I love the idea but I've got grain piled up wasting away on the floor. I will have a rodent problem if I don't clean this mess up.
Try a water heater pan under it to collect any spilled. Or I've heard people flipping these around. I have 1 pen that likes to waste feed. The others don't. Not sure why. It's all pellets.
I made a 55 gal. drum with 4 feeders just like yours. There's way too much feed coming out the feeder on the floor. Putting a pan on the floor or caping the feeders to prevent more feed from falling out defeats the entire purpose. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, not with these wasteful feeders.

They can get food. I left 2 big Black Copper Marans out here to watch over all these little birds for 4 months. The only feed they had came from that feeder. I can understand the concern though. You can always use a 3 inch street elbow as well if you're worried.
I'm not sure what you're talking about. How would these leak. There is no water to leak out. If you're talking about spilled food, I don't have that issue either. I use these every day.

THAT'S a FAIL ! since in my opinion the 1st an d most important aspect of a feeder is rodentproofing and as a standalone unit without having to manipulate it while chicken etc can feed without impediment . Unfortunately this feeder doesnt fulfill this basic requirement
Cool. The only way to really prevent mice/rats is to measure out the appropriate feed for the day and feed it to your chickens so there is no waste. This works great for me, if a couple of mice get some feed, so what.

Yeah. You wouldn't need anything like this. But you could make one with a 5 gallon bucket.

I buy them from a local feed store. They get them from a feed mill in Pocahontas AR.

mine are still able to dump a lot of feed on the ground as well.
