  • Star Trek star William Shatner talks about the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan star along with director Nicholas Meyer other industry experts as part of the 4-episode docuseries "Greatest Geek Year Ever: 1982."
The docuseries debuts on The CW on Saturday, July 8th at 8 PM and repeats on Tuesday, July 11th and airs every Saturday all July long. It is also available on the free CW app.
    About the series...
An inside look back at the greatest geek year in cinema ever, 1982, with stars, directors, writers, producers and pop culture historians sharing their insights about such legendary films as E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Creepshow, The Dark Crystal, Tron, Conan The Barbarian, Paul Schrader’s Cat People, and The Road Warrior . But, in addition to honoring the classics, the film revisits such cult films as Megaforce , the megabomb starring Barry Bostwick (“the good guys always win... even in the 80’s”), The Beastmaster, The Sword & The Sorcerer, a low budget Conan cash-in and Liquid Sky , a film about miniature aliens in New York who thrive on heroin and sex.
And, of course, 1982 also gave us what Entertainment Weekly later called the Citizen Kane of teensploitation films: Fast Times at Ridgemont High as well as action classics like First Blood, Rocky III, and 4 8 Hours . Filled with exclusive interviews, rare behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive never-before-seen clips in a fun, lively, no holds barred celebration of the legendary moviegoing year of 1982, Greatest Geek Year Ever will take viewers behind- the-scenes at a time when fandom was in its infancy, featuring eye-opening interviews with genre superstars from in front of and behind the camera, of the biggest and most influential movies ever made.
Among the iconic show business legends interviewed include Ron Howard, Paul Schrader, John Sayles, Amy Heckerling, Henry Winkler, Sean Young, William Shatner, Joanna Cassidy, Keith David, Cameron Crowe, Michael Deeley, Lisa Henson, Dean Devlin, Bruce Campbell, Dee Wallace, Felicia Day, Susan Seidelman, Roger Corman, Barry Bostwick, Marc Singer, Bryan Fuller, Leonard Maltin, Mike Medavoy, and over 100 more stars, directors, writers, producers, critics, executives, and pop culture historians.

I love Star Trek 2 as much as any one, but what was "confusing" about The Motion Picture?

I remember watching Star Trek The Motion Picture when it came out on tv, after halfway through I go same ole stupid Star Trek, and remember thinking the 60s tv series was better. So when Star Trek II came out in 82, I dont even remember it being advertised on tv for the big screen so I didn't see it in the theater.
But when renting movies started to be the next big thing in early 80s I remember seeing a poster of Star Trek II at the rental store and decided to watch it. I remember as I started watching movie, I go what is this, this is more stupid then the Motion Picture, then it started showing that it was just a reenactment of a final battle scene on ship, so ok I kept watching and soon after the first acted, I go wow this is getting good, then I see Khan and remember thinking this is really a good movie, and when over I go WOW that was the best Star Trek I ever seen, I lost count how many times I watched that movie since. Then after that movie I kept eye out for next Star Trek at the theater and seen them all at the big screen, some 3 times in a row, until Undiscovered Country, every Star Trek after that has been garbage.....

The oversized 1982 Starfleet Communicator @ 1:20 was the single ugliest Star Trek prop to ever grace any Star Trek movie or television show.
