  • Irish Flax Farming is a clip from the dvd "Lint & Linen" which shows the growing of flax in Ireland during the 1950's . We show the flax seed being planted, the pulling of the flax and then show the flax being retted in the flax dam.

      I think the opposite is the case. Modern technology has reduced and in many cases totally eliminated the need for rural communities to come together. That has created negative knock-on effects for people's mental and physical health. These kind of activities were an opportunity to have a laugh together, help each other out, and to make people feel part of their local community, not to mention the kids clearly had fun too, being out in the fresh air, instead of hanging on their phones.

    Thank you for this video. My grandparents grew flax - during WWII there was a requirement for farmers in Northern Ireland to grow a certain amount of flax. I don’t know if this applied only to farms in particular areas or to farms over a certain size. My mother and her sisters made the rush bands for tying up the flax. The smell of the retting dam was disgusting, she said! But she loved the blue flowers in the fields.
