As a Q400 Pilot I can ensure you, we love flying this thing, we hate it, but we love it ;) and it flys really well, the systems and the way they are put into the plane are more the issue here ;) And if you do it right, it lands pretty neat

Never worked on these but did lotta work on crj 200, 700, and 900. Its pretty much an crj but with turbo props. Crj is a well built very safe aircraft but require hell of lot maintenance lotta things break constantly. I used to work for a regional carrier now I work for a major and was surprised to find how little maintenance large aircraft require. Not talking about scheduled maintenance im talking about system and structural failures. Most the unscheduled maintenance i do these days is broken junk in the cabin, seats, overhead bins, clogged sinks, ext.

I was a real life captain on the Q400 and it was probably my favourite airplane that I ever flew. Very fast for a turboprop and amazing landing performance.
Taking this from YUL to YTZ was awesome on those flap 35 landings.
It is true that it is a hard plane to land smoothly that's for sure, that's why the nickname it the crash 8. My trick for landing smoothly was to come in 10 knots above ref (which is the recommended technique) and adding a bit of power in the flare. If you're in a situation where you can't come in above ref speed (short runway or something like that) then it's pretty hard to land smoothly.
Still, was an awesome plane! Jets are overrated, I don't know why but I'm a turboprop lover! Twin otter is probably my all time favourite plane ever! but the q400 is a beast of a turboprop :)
also I can't remember but I think the tail strike attitude on landing is like 8 degrees, so if you're screwing up your landing, don't pull up! add power!

Living under the approach and about 5 km from the threshold of rwy 16 at YCD I love the constant parade of both WJ Q400 and the Jazz 200/300 over my head every day. No joke about those Q's hauling ass, either. They push you back in the seat pretty hard on takeoff...

I flew on a Dash-8 with air inuit. The whole thing was vibrating like it was about to tear itself apart and the noise was quite something when both props resonate together. Interesting experience and very capable planes perfect for the north but jets are way more comfortable :P I don't remember the landing being rough so the pilot did a great job. They actually go up and down Quebec's west coast stopping at various inuit villages like a bus so they get tons of landing practice everyday.

As an actual Q400 First Officer I have to say it is not as bad as you describe it. Landings are a challenge , but the key is power. Do not cut the power until main gear ground contact. As you said, it is not an airbus. If you idle at 20 feet with Max RPM you will feel it most definetely. Power on is the cheat;)

The idea of having a pilot test an unfamiliar aircraft is thrilling and dangerous. In civil aviation, this is considered unsafe. However, using a simulator allows for entertaining and unconventional scenarios. This can be further amplified with unscripted audio content and editing techniques. Bravo, as flashy as it is unedifying, you've made a gonzo epic.

The flight program mimics the wing, the wing is a fast wing(low drag) with high aspect ratio
high loading and laminar air flow. The bottom line is you fly the wing at high speed to the runway
level it and cut the power. There is little or no flaring to stall the wing, it just settles with the nose
3-7 degrees high on to the mains when it gets ready to do it. Hence the name land-o-matic.

When the nose gear doesn't come down ... Its a mechanics/maintenance problem.... there is a bolt that has to be installed in SPECIFIC DIRECTION not easiest to do and mechanics in the field didn't read the maintenance manual... installing the bolt in reverse direction.... The nose gear it self is extended by gravity... i.e. the up lock is released and gear free falls in the down lock position.... by installing the bolt in the wrong direction it snags on the surrounding structure preventing the gear from extending..... (First incident Japans ANA Q400..... ua-cam.com/video/rHXpV4vZLOU/v-deo.html ) As for pilots hating the plane.... well I haven't met one who did..... You should ask a Q400 mechanic why we all HATE it... You also talk about how noisy it is for the PAX. The "Q" in the Q400 stands for Quiet, as it is also known as "The Quiet One." they actually use noise cancelling and white noise generators to deaden the noise.... Also, "reminds me of Seattle a few years ago"..... Well played, that cracked me up.

The thickest runway which I know was at Kerch airport because Buran shuttle was for a short time considered to land here. It was constructed of several layers of concrete prefab blocks. In 2015-16 this unused thicc runway was deconstructed and moved to a New Simferopol airport to save some costs.

Pre-COVID, all three major canadian airlines flew the Q400 into my hometown of Thunder Bay. I fly a lot for work - so I've probably done over 200 flights on a Q400. But now Air Canada flies their rouge A321 instead - it shaved half the flight time to Toronto haha
I miss flying the Q400 - the vibrations put me to sleep every time; but I only fly AC, so I have to stick to the sardine-packed rouge jet.

Pre-covid, I used to take these semi frequently on Flybe. They are VERY powerful and their small size gives them a certain charm. The 2 by 2 seats makes them better for the passengers, there being no middle seats. I can confirm that there's generally a rough landing

Another cool turbo prop is the L-188 Lockheed Electra. They were built back in the 50’s originally for passenger use but today, they are now used for cargo use and fire fighting. A company that my dad is a boss at, owns a bunch of them that fight fires all over Canada and sometimes the states. They’re pretty cool, you should check them out! Nice video btw
