I discovered you today. Am from Kenya and my life goal is to have a sustainable ecosystem in kenya or rather Africa. Kenya herself has the national grid at 90% renewable energy becouse our power mostly comes from hydro and geo thermo. Power is abit expensive here at almost $22c per kwh and alot of peole are switching to solar. Since power is about 50% of the co2 production, i think we can adopt more on this sustainable ways… thanks for the great insight

How do I or any individual personally switch to being circular is that a thing at this point of do we still need more people coming up with systems before we can say we are a part of this and are we talking about a did half economy in terms of actual money or just products and resources
I think it's more important for us to cooperate with other people as collectives to bring about political and economic change at the policy and system level. I think turning it into a question about individual consumer choices is the wrong approach, although it has a small part to play.
My question in reusable systems is that mayority are lookin for tin cans or aluminum containers while a well made plastic bottle could do the job, just like the shampoo example. Ive seen studies that show plastic manufacture has a lower environmental footprint than metal or glass. Is this true?
The reason is generally because plastic bottles(long term refillable) suffer from attrition(Scratches, discolouration, fading of print). Aluminium is much more resistant to this, glass can get scratched but the problem is it can break. Plastic PET bottles do have a lower emissions footprint than aluminium and glass. The game changes however, when aluminium is recycled. The average aluminium can contains 67% recycled content, this puts the average can at odds with the plastic bottle from an emissions perspective(when you compare similar capacities e.g- 250ml can vs 250 ml bottle not 8 cans vs a 2L bottle!). The real advantage is that today(as well as anytime in the past) a can be made with 100% recycled content and can be recycled in a closed loop. This is not possible with plastic. rPET bottles get discoloured after one cycle getting a brownish tint and degrade. New virgin resin will always be required to be blended otherwise we're left with garbage.

I don’t really like using circular economy as an excuse to charge people a monthly rental fee for a product, i would still want the option to own my product while still having the option to dispose of it safely so that it can be reused, but everything else seems like a good idea to me.

For me, your argument that you will not recycle out of the problem seems a bit of a strawman fallacy. You create a vision of what you think recycling is, how it works, to tell with YOUR vision it is not sufficient. But in MY view, the plastics problem is caused not by the material, but by the improper handling of the material. Of course, you could BAN these improper handling and have ALL plastics recyclable in a close loop. NO emission. NO material being sent to landfills or being trough into nature.
