S1 - Ep 188 - Cradock - A Town in the Upper Valley of the Great Fish River!

  • Опубліковано 14 жов 2022
  • We were surprised to see how big Cradock was! This town is situated in the upper valley of the Great Fish River and has so much history. Cradock is a bigger town compared to the ones we usually explore, so we made a list of the places of interest which we thought were interesting to go and see. We started at the old and magnificent Dutch Reformed Church in the centre of town and I was very lucky to have the privilege to take a walk through the inside of this beautiful building. Then we saw the old Standard Bank building and so many more places which included our visit to Olive Schreiner's house which she lived in during her time in Cradock. That was a real treat! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #cradock #easterncape #greatfishriver #oliveschreiner #writer

You missed a trick by not stopping at the Victoria Manor Hotel and Die Tuishuise. You would have been transported in time - back to when these establishments were first opened. What you saw in the Olive Schreiner house is more than matched at the hotel and Tuishuise. Food at the hotel is EXCELLENT and very reasonably priced. Next time........

I loved walking through the Olive Schreiner House, it was well worth a visit. 👌🏻 The hotel and renovated houses looked fantastic from the outside and I'm glad we were able to see them. It is simply impossible though for us to stop at every single place of interest in a town.

It sounds like you know this part of the country well too. We never expected it to be so big and so busy. It was really unexpected! 😳 I think you're right, one will need a good few days to see all there is to see. A lot of fascinating history here, it seems. 🏛️

Such a cool series of videos !
Cradock is the first major stop on the Port Elizabeth to Joburg drive, hence all the trucks.
Loved the Hofmeyr video as well with that amazing pink church you can see from about 10km out of town. I stop to admire it every time, found 7 goats chilling outside it last time 🐐🐐
Also seeing Mastertons Coffee on sale in the store you entered was heartwarming ☕☕ Roasting since 1924 in my beloved city Port Elizabeth 🌊
Keep the amazing videos coming and stay safe ☀️

Thank you for your kind comment and for watching our videos. 🚗 That is very interesting info about the trucks, it really is a super busy town! 🚛 I agree with you, that church in Hofmeyr is indeed a unique building and one can even distinguish the colour from far away, we loved that! The goats were not attending church the day we were in town though! 😁🐏 What an eye for detail you have to have noticed the make of coffee in the shop! 🤩☕

We stayed over once at Victoria Manor, in one of those little old house's.. they've been restored so beautifully, each house done up differently but keeping with the old traditional charm, the one we stayed in was so cute .it's tiny little kitchen set up with an old table with antique white linen.. and all the old fashioned utensils on display, a little back door into a gorgeous tiny garden. I see they've restored many more since we were there. We had dinner at the Victoria Manor house which was absolutely beautiful inside, like you've stepped back in time.. great memory, Thank you 🥰

Owned by the Antrobus family who farm`Longacre on the gravel road between Cradock and Schoembee. Sandra Antrobus's work on these properties is stunning. I have visited on a number of occasions - being related is also an excuse for visiting 🙂- visited in May and will be back soon. For the Fish River canoe folk, Baroda Weir goes through Longacre.

It really is super busy now with a lot of through traffic from large trucks. 🚛 We thought we'd get an early start that day, but not early enough to catch it quiet. 😏Us being essentially budget travellers, we try and do our homework on accommodation establishments before we book and we've been crazy lucky so far with the places we've managed to find. 😍🏨 However, there was this one campsite we booked in the Malgas / Witsand area. 😨 We merely turned around upon arrival and made alternative arrangements for that evening. All good though, those experiences are part of the joys of travelling! 😁🚗
