Best version of Ceremony with Ian’s Voice, I think still the mic off on first verse and hearing his voice on the background is amazing, NO version will never be the same without Ian’s voice
Their lyrics are beautifully, and poetically composed by Ian, god rest. But put me in an incredible melancholic trance. I only hope that any words I should ever express or write in life, are a fraction as powerful or important.
Terry, Hi, can you please msg me, I hope you are still around, you're comment is from 7 years ago, I remember you, I hope you get this msg, my email is kathleenaustralia.2008@hotmail.com . I hope to hear from you, I am currently writing a book, I am in Australia. Hopefully you see this msg, Im 25 years old now.
There's so little footage of them that it's nice even to see known footage presented in a different way, I would have loved to hear a full studio recorded version by JD but that wasn't to be, the fact that New Order made it their first release brings closure of a sort.
I dont hear depression, I don't hear sickness or any of that. I hear power, in the music and the lyrics....maybe I'm too much of a JD fan to hear anything else other than a band I should've seen live
IMAGINE what the 3rd album would of been like? ceremony/atmosphere/in a lonely place/LWTUA etc but knowing factory it probably would of not made it on the final album? the songs they were writing would of made them an even greater legacy if thats even possible
Mr. Disco if you posted this 2 weeks ago, it wasn't the 35 anniversary of Ian's death. Today is the 35th anniversary, May 18th, 2015. Anyways, i am remembering him today with much love and respect. I am actually getting 2 new tattoos done in a few hours....the words "unknown pleasures" and "closer"
Surely with todays technology, someone could enhance and bring out Ians vocals at the start of this song. I understand it was a fuck up during this performance and his mic wasn't turned up for the first verse, but you can still hear it in the background. Imagine hearing this as it should have been . Total fucking eargasim!
this is how it was. it was a different time. a time i am still blessed with, having lived through it, before the death came upon the people of the west.
A low-fidelity audience recording copy with Curtis's vocal intact is known to exist. Restoring the "lost" section of vocals would be very tricky, but quite doable. The vocal on the master recording IS there, but it's captured as a leak from the guitar mikes. Speeding up or slowing down the audience tape to synch with the master, isolating Curtis's voice (very hard with a poor quality mono recording) and blending the vocal component of the former with what exists of the latter would produce something approaching an acceptable complete vocal. It'd still (pun intended) sound ghastly, but much better than nothing. Bear in mind this would only be patching about 40 seconds of audio in total.
I know this is an old comment, but since you can hear the faint sound of Ian's voice through the other microphones it's possible to dial in his voice on a remix. In this day and age, it would be cake to remix this from all of the mics that were turned on picking up Ian's voice from the PA. I predict, someday it will be done if it hasn't already, but even still, I like the way it is just like square says. Such a cool song, grew up with it, I always thought that's the way the song went LOL. By the way there are other bootlegs out there (not of this song), that sounded 1000x better than this that have came out just recently.
I agree, and this is one band that always seems to have someone come forward with some newly "discovered" recordings or pictures they had in their basement etc anyway.
Whenever I am down or just feel unhappy I know what I need to do and that’s play the greatest band in the world to feel better. Joy Division/enough said.
the eeriest part of this song is: muffled vocal on rehearsal tape, even more muffled on soundcheck, Mic not working on first verse, how his voice explodes louder on second verse here, it's like the song itself was drowning him out, he was already disappearing slowly....
My opinion is that this and a lot of "Ceremony" were demos they were working on just before Ian did himself in ... after that it all turned to "New Order" and how the demos from such period would have ended up is anybody´s guess .
the beauty that crashes into the future, each generation has this mood, but I think there will never be an artist, that will express better than them this sadness.
Connected speech misteries: is it "picture me and then you start watchin"? Or maybe STOP watching? The whole song meaning would change. Anyway a great great song

Agree Ceremony is a Joy Division song.
Joy Division has always depressed me in a beautiful way. I guess they call it melancholy. Thanks for posting this.
They are brilliant !
Their lyrics are beautifully, and poetically composed by Ian, god rest. But put me in an incredible melancholic trance. I only hope that any words I should ever express or write in life, are a fraction as powerful or important.
out of all their songs I've listened to for over 20 plus years...Ceremony is still my favorite JD song!

His voice was becoming something very special by this time, as mentioned by his widow Deborah Curtis in her book.
The emotional fragility in Ian's voice cuts through your soul like a razorblade.
Best version by far, especially considering the context of its creation.
It's faster here like it should have been.
Hahaha I have no idea how this video has so many views, I was a lot younger and recorded the footage off my television from joy division movies 😂😂 !
Amo este video lo escucho para trabajar
Well thank you for putting it on here - my favorite JD song
There's so little footage of them that it's nice even to see known footage presented in a different way, I would have loved to hear a full studio recorded version by JD but that wasn't to be, the fact that New Order made it their first release brings closure of a sort.
The Ian voice is "the voice of Ian". This seems the only version with Ian.
Ermete Trismegisto there's a much better sound check performance out there...where you can hear the vocals.
A musical suicide letter if I've ever heard one. Damn good song, but it breaks my heart a little every time I hear it.
Erik Leiken Not alone there.... 😢
I dont hear depression, I don't hear sickness or any of that. I hear power, in the music and the lyrics....maybe I'm too much of a JD fan to hear anything else other than a band I should've seen live
RESPECT , IAN CURTIS FOREVER
love the audio quality on this. Amazing. My favorite version of this song.
what could have been
heartbreaking and beautiful angst.
joydivisiongirl Makes me cry each time I listen to it.
IMAGINE what the 3rd album would of been like? ceremony/atmosphere/in a lonely place/LWTUA etc but knowing factory it probably would of not made it on the final album? the songs they were writing would of made them an even greater legacy if thats even possible
This is awesome and doesnt need any remastering would be ruined
transmission is the greatest Manchester song ever.
One of the most chilling Joy Division songs... Forever watching love grow, Forever letting Ian know
This is a beautiful video! Thank you so much for making and posting this. Today marks the 35th anniversary! Thank you again!

Yeah I got that wrong, sorry. Yup today is the 35th Anniversary. Cheers!
Mi canción favorita de JD. Y ya van 35 años.
Quedaras en el cielo como la estrella más brillante 🖤🌠

Mike Burley Leave it as it is...this is a slice of history
this is how it was. it was a different time. a time i am still blessed with, having lived through it, before the death came upon the people of the west.

Restore it/don't restore it. Personally, I grew up with this version and it seems comfortable to me.

Given the band is not ever coming back, cleaning up what little they did produce as much as possible seems a worthy endeavour to me
I agree, and this is one band that always seems to have someone come forward with some newly "discovered" recordings or pictures they had in their basement etc anyway.
The 'audience tape' of Ceremony is here:

16 days before his death. RIP Ian.
A 30 anos essa musica dividiu minha vida em antes e depois...
Thank you for posting this. The recording that was gathered at this show could not have been better. Whoever was there, screwed up well.
Whenever I am down or just feel unhappy I know what I need to do and that’s play the greatest band in the world to feel better. Joy Division/enough said.
Haha It's funny that you would write that. This has been a go to video for me, for a couple of years. Great song and video.
May 18 remember Ian Curtis
"Ceremony" - version from J.D. 'Still' - The number #1 (LP-C#1) that changed my life.***
Good girl, I clicked on you're video and a commercial was skipped. You are awesome
mi cancion favorita de joy ....
La mejor versión de ceremony, atrapada en directo. Nunca se llegó a grabar en estudio creo, salvo las versiones de new order inferiores
have you seen the new order gig at taras Shevchenko-new York 1981,fantastic live version of ceremony
I had a ticket for this, but instead I went to a ska night at The Pig and Whistle, the Selector was the hedline act, they were great !
the radio dept.a band from Sweden are one of my new faves, joy division are one of their influences,my favourite track is "always a relief".
Fucking great!!!
the eeriest part of this song is: muffled vocal on rehearsal tape, even more muffled on soundcheck, Mic not working on first verse, how his voice explodes louder on second verse here, it's like the song itself was drowning him out, he was already disappearing slowly....
A fucking amazing song, no need of remastering is a great depressing piece of art itself!!!

40 years ago tonight.
There is an audience recording that has the WHOLE concert… a professionally done matrix would be an interesting listen
the beauty that crashes into the future,
each generation has this mood,
but I think there will never be an artist,
that will express better than them this sadness.
great video
Galaxie 500's version is one of my all time favorite songs. Pure melancholy. But THIS is a powerhouse.
imortais! imortais! imortais!
Don't you wish to go back in time and repair the damage the audio guy did? Man, I would have loved a clean version of this live performance
La meilleure version.
Connected speech misteries: is it "picture me and then you start watchin"? Or maybe STOP watching? The whole song meaning would change. Anyway a great great song
my favourite version.
Clássico ❣️
great footage
that bass
IAN RIP
dear Ian. trying to live with those goddam new order lads killed him.
not sure who does the best version, this live version its gotta be jd.
Powerful Shit!!!!

Was this not Ian's last gig before he passed?
I would love to know where the footage 2:39 is from
I think that is the only known footage of him smiling.
Where do the images come from?
Joy division documentary/ recorded this on my laptop 10 years ago !!
Sounds like heskith is there 2 th9( still f.k.9 ) Oi( x
Uninversity? lol nice one
He was the Trent Reznor of England.
+ToughGuyver1 I threw up a little when I read this
Ok, then Trent Reznor is the american Ian Curtis. Hope that sounds better.
+ToughGuyver1 Ian Curtis is Ian Curtis. No one has ever reached his caliber of writing lyrics and performing with such passion.
KlubKatz Come on now don't say "nobody has ever reached his caliber", Morrissey in the Smiths days was pretty damn amazing.
Crunch Buttsteak No one has ever.
