Joy Division Live at Birmingham University- Ceremony [Gig Version] May 2, 1980

- Enjoy the actual and complete version of Ceremony played in the Birmingham gig in May 1980. The recording by the engineer starts in the middle of the song, this is the whole thing! Enjoy!
I think its insanely sad that there isnt a good clear Ian version of this song and never will be. Also is it just me or is it sooo sad that there are like no interviews of ian or much videos of him talking? Its fascinating and makes ian much more of a legend because no one knows alot about him other than close friends and family.
There is a rehearsal tape off this song you can listen too on UA-cam it's quite good
There is at least one interview with Ian if you search it out
@@riftwalkers165I have it on vinyl and it’s clear enough and I don’t like the A.I versions that make Ian sound like a robot. And I like this version too it’s history and should be left the way it is. I know it’s a shame we couldn’t get the Joy Division version as a complete single but you feel it on the live and rehearsal versions and that’s enough for me Not a digital A.I robotic version that sounds clear but lacks the emotion and humanity of these versions.
you should read his biography
There is an AI version it out now, it is very very well done❤
40 years ago today. 2 May 1980, 2 May 2020. We miss you Ian and we always will do.
I was so angry at him - this little stranger, me, in the audience - he raised us up then went & did the stupid thing - I knew he was sick & struggling, but the pain of him doing that... we also sort of knew it was coming, if that makes any sense
...If ever I had the T.A.R.D.I.S. from Dr. Who...The first thing I would do, would be to travel to that house, on that night...with the intent of hopefully changing history, for the better...
@@parkermorgan9211 even if he learned of his significance and importance in the world of music, he would still go through with his suicide. Ian was the kind of person that if he made his mind up it would be impossible for him to change it. His illness is what killed him and he was a few years shy from getting the proper medication for his epilepsy. I would often dream of a world where he lived but this world wasn't ready for him as he wasn't ready for it.
@@tinyclangerusawhat are you talking about?

This for me is the best version, when Ceremony is found with Lyrics and all, we will have stumbled upon Greatness.

@@StevieRevbo This is just the New Order singles version, but slowed down.
@@Erikih Still a good version, and I think slowing it down made it better
There are lyrics. Ians handwritten lyrics in his notebook. Hundreds of them; ceremony is among them. Debbie had them printed in a book: Touching From A Distance
The joy division version despite having bad quality is the best version I never liked any new order versions of joy Division songs to me it loses the feelings the connection that Ian had with the lyrics and music and it loses the specialness
A heart felt last gig, live concert with Ian giving his all but not his best. Ian is tired, ill, sad in his life and feels he is letting down those around him who are counting on him. Unfortunatley Ian is the one others had let down in the end. He did not want to be a bother to others with his problems but he was reaching out in his music as cry for help. Had someone truly set down with him in a warm way and give him direction and kept a better eye on him. He was giving all the signs in 1980 with the suicide attempts. How can you love a friend, husband be in Ian's life and not take more of a stand to go the extra mile to be sure he stays around. He is so greatly missed and thought of and loved in his generation and now new generations that have come along. Ian left his mark not only in his music for the ears but in people hearts as well. He also was amazing to see on film live performances and his dancing was unique. He was a beautiful person inside and out for the most part. He was just confused very sick and at times hard to understand by friends and family. But who has the right to hold anything bad against Ian for doing the best he could under his cicumstances. It was hard for him to ask for help.Although he could be very bold at times he still was a shy person in his spirt, things didn't come easy for Ian. Miss and love you Brother. I'm proud of all you did and all your hard work you left behind for others to enjoy. You were an amazing singer, musician,Lyricist and poem writer and a passing angel to this world.God bless you.
Don't think it was that easy for him, he was on like 50 different meds and the world clearly did not understand mental health and depression. As sad and tragic as the Joy Division story is, it is achingly beautiful and perfect in a way. Im so happy the surviving members kept going as New ORder, it was a wonderful journey of hope and growth and great way to keep Ian's legacy alive. Both Joy division and New order are my favourite bands for similar but different reasons. They overlap a great deal without actually being anything alike tonally.
Young Everette. Mental illness is poorly understood by the majority of the public, especially back in 1980. Ian was suffering from Major Depressive Disorder as well as his epilepsy. As I've come to understood in life, the good die young. Such is the case.
This is my favorite version of Ceremony because the band is playing with so much more energy than on the other version!
I have never heard this version and this is from a guy who saw Joy Division in the Glasgow Apollo supporting The Buzzcocks in 1980.
Raw and real.
Their tour with the Buzzcocks was in '78. In 1980 they were touring as headline act, in N Europe, then in the UK, and booked for the US (cancelled due to Ian's death).
@@UKAlanR the tour was in 79
@@jumofi you're right
@@jumofi you're right - 1979. Certainly not in '80, as the main comment above said.
@@jumofi you're quite right there - my slip-up when correcting the assertion above that it was in 1980.
I think the recording by the engineer starts at 1:53. I calculated it with the recorded version of this masterpiece.
LOVE that this is available at long last. It complements well the version we have from Still.
Great memories of this night, which no-one knew would turn out to be so significant.

RIP IAN JOY DIVISION IS FOREVER
I need a video bro PLEASE I needa see the Ian Curtis performance to this song Fucc i wish I was there. If I had just ONE trip in a time machine it would be to this place and time right here.
Videos still quite rare in those days, and this was 'just another gig'......or would have been.
Imagine a musical world,
without Stephen Morris ?
Same.
Don't go there.
Damn that set list at the end looks so good. Wish I could have been at a gig. Too bad I’m only 17 lol.
I'm 61 & am happy to say - you'd have loved it - it was so wild, so meaningful, so intense; the crowd united in its love of our local home grown genius...
Deborah Beale were you at the University show??
@@noahcorona1397 No, sadly, but I saw them at the Russell Club/The Factory in Manchester on that same spring 1980 'tour'
I also saw them in August at the Beach Club, first time playing in public after IC"s death - the audience, all 100 (guesstimate) or so of us, was utterly reverential - the pain in the room, tangible... Nobody sang. Just instrumental music.
@@noahcorona1397 'Isolation' was always my favorite. The music's so uplifting, the lyrics are genius
LOVE LOVE LOVE JOY DIVISION!
This would've been the only recording of this song with Ian Curtis. This was also joy divisions last performance with Ian.
not true there are a few rehearsal demos
It was their last LIVE performance, 16 days before he died
There are a few others
@TheOldEchoes nope this one can't be found elsewhere from the start. The sound engineer recorded the song midway and this is the only one that recorded from the start with a good audio base. Next time dont dislike..
This is the audience recording version, surely.
I love the sound of the audio
Holy shit this is so effin raw and GOOD!
Has there been a better song? I honestly don't think there has, before or after.
You can still here Ian's voice in the foldback.
There is an excellent AI version of this out now
I hear elements of this song in the New Order song Regret.
New Order re-released this song after Ian passed.

thank god this still up, fuck yo, best version hands down
Dude this recording is great in the relesed one Ian’s voice is gone in this one there are really great vocals
Really hope someone finds the real lyrics to this song one day
SECRET ORIGINAL LYRICS:
Focus how the wheels are moving
Find the same, the same old story
Focus why the wheels are turning
throw them away until they will catch fire
Hope to find the same little story
maybe then they will see me
Hope and pray, no one saw me
maybe then, they will go catch fire
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
heaven knows I got to get somewhere
crash and burn, the things I did
I got too stealth prepared for it this time
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
heaven knows I got to be somewhere
Avenues all wind with trees
pictures me and then you'll start watching

thanks for this treasure
@shutupfreak There were 3 other members of Joy Division who deserve to be heard too.
@NocturneVid66 Thank you!
"New One"
so till 1:53 its audience recording then it switches to engineer recording right?
Zemzem Dağdelen no this is the entire audience recording.
@TheOldEchoes I know but the other audio starts half way, this one starts from the start.
@shutupfreak But there's no other recording that lets you hear this song in its entirety, I love the better quality version on Still, but that's incomplete, yet I also love this complete version in its 'shit quality' completeness. Unless you've discovered some new recording of it?
Anyway, you can say what you want, it's your opinion. In the end, I'm a Joy Division fan that enjoys any and all available recordings of their all-too-brief career.
New Order's first single!
@birdandthe I just found different downloads to ceremony and found these different versions. You may say what you want but they do sound different. :P cheers for the observation
May.
i can imagine Ian going crazy on the chorus
@Erikih IT SAVES THE EFFORT OF PRESSING AN EXTRA BUTTON
This is the full version of Ceremony then inserted, with the first part cut, in Still?
Many people assume he died because of drug abuse, like many others. It was the debilitating seizures. So fucking sad. Genius taken too soon.
I know the pitch of this is off, but it makes this song even more depressing to hear.
Its the setlist of songs ;D
What was the source for this? Too bad the full version wasn’t used on Still.
@birdandthe yes but both at different pitches and tempos.
@birdandthe I release all my videos before nintendo. I posted all versions because they were all in the bootleg flak, why not?
where was the picture at 1:13 from?? :)
He used to play that guitar in love will tear us apart, so it's probably a live of that song

Why?

I'm struck by the similarity of the percussion and uptempo with Gloria by U2.
Of course! I never thought of that. But JD were a big influence on U2 - they even met, at Britannia Row studios.
Really cool. Would have been a great show to see. I was only 5 years old, wouldn't have worked.
