    Leave it to Ford to require the exhaust be removed for a simple oil pan gasket replacement. I'll be doing this soon on a 2010 Escape, and I expect I'll spend more time on the exhaust than I will the actual gasket replacement. LOL. Appreciate the "how to" video A1 Auto.

    Followed torque specs and procedure exactly as you put it. Cracked the oil pan.
    Note** everything looks great here so far, but before torquing the two bolts to 30lb ft into the transmission, I would more than hand tighten the rest of your bolts* perhap torque all the oil pan bolts to 9lb ft, then torque the two to 30lb ft, then go back and torque the rest to 18lb ft. Reason I say this, is that the two you torque first to 30lb ft will be holding the rear of the oil pan DOWN from its mating surface at the base of the engine block. So if you torque these to 30lb feet like he did, then do the sequence around the pan, there is a chance you will crack the oil pan at the rear of the block like I just did. Plus I'm using a snap on digital 3/8 torque wrench, and did it exactly as he said. So FYI, do a partial torque on the those bolts going to the trans. I belive they just need to be snug. It's kind of a stupid design, as there really isn't much of a need to put two bolts to the trans, just the pan. So keep that in mind when doing this job.

    If you need to change both the oil pan gasket as well as the timing cover gasket, which order would you perform the tasks? Timing cover gasket and then oil pan gasket or oil pan gasket first and then timing cover gasket? Without removing the engine, i'm pretty sure you have loosen/remove an engine mount and lift engine up on the oil pan to get to the timing cover. I'm thinking about the gasket area where these two meet. I know i'd need to put a 2x6 or something under the oil pan to not puncture it. Thx.

      On the engine block above, that is where the timing chain cover attaches to the block. So there are 2 separate pieces of metal joined together. Anywhere you have 2 pieces of metal you need to seal that point up or you may end up with leaks. Most engines are like that from what I've experienced.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects 3 роки тому

      That's the seam where the timing cover bolts to the engine. Adding some silicone ensures that the oil pan won't leak. It's a bit of extra insurance.

    How would I know it’s not a transmission leak? Underneath my 2012 Ford Escape it’s covers in oil. I’m not 100 % sure if it’s oil leak or transmission fluid leaking. I need help!!!!

    • @sophieboivin3411
      @sophieboivin3411 3 роки тому

      The transmission and engine block are separate and the oil pan should not have any kind of a transmission leak. Make sure you can see exactly where the leak is coming from, and spraying some brake cleaner on the leaky area can help with that. The next indicator is the color of the fluid that is leaking. Engine oil is generally going to leak blackish under the engine (used, dirty oil), where transmission fluid is reddish brown. Hope that helps!

Only thing the shop has to do for me is vacuum the freeon out before i start. Then when im done they have to evacuate the ac or whatever its called and fill it up with freeon. i work at a dealership in canada and EVERY mechanic at every dealership is doing this the second they see a rusty bolt
      every dealership i've ever heard of pays by the job, not by the hour; if you take 3 hours to do a 2 hour job, you only get paid for 2 hours. replacing an oil pain + gasket is coded as 2 hours of labour, and removing all those rusted exhaust bolts "properly" can easily take well over an hour depending on how rusted they are, i've seen guys in industrial construction spend an hour removing ONE rusty bolt, which ive never seen done in automotive in my life. so the second you have any serious trouble, you either do what the guy did in the video, cut them off or drill them out

    Fords yuk. That rubber cover you removed in the beginning, seemed like a bad idea to have an access point covered by rubber?
