I am 72 years old. My introduction to Bach, at the age of 15, was through the Jacques Loussier Trio; I have never looked back. Bach has been a constant companion to me for nearly 60 years. The performances of the NBS have been a revelation. Another outstanding performance and production. Thank you to all, especially to Jos van Veldhoven and Thomas Hobbs.
No imaginaba que el Trio Jacques Loussier tuviera casi 50 años de existencia. Yo escuche por primera vez a Bach con los conciertos de Brandeburgo dirigidos por Karajan cuando tenía 10 años.
I have fourteen years old and the NBS was also a revelation to me. Their level of understanding of Bach is absolutely extraordinary, and inspires me enormously !
Bravissimo ! It's fabulous, a real treats for the ears and the soul. I think J. van Veldhoven is one of the best conductors in the world. He seems to understand Bach like no one else, almost as if he had spent his life by his side ... which he, in a sense, did! I would like to equal it one day, but it is almost impossible! It is infinitely precious, and this performance reflects the intimate understanding of the artist by the NBS. Good job! I greatly admire what you do !
Marvelous. You made my afternoon. I live close to Chicago, and if you’ve been following the headlines from the states, watching and listening to something that celebrates the beauty of Bach’s music, and the talent of today’s musicians, helps me to forget the world outside for a little while.
Einfach wunderbar!
Superb performance, I've rewatched it many times and it just gets better! Also I just might have a crush on Thomas Hobbs :) At any rate I've been listening to all of his stuff that I could get my online hands on recently
The original autograph of the aria and recitative "Erbarme dich!" differs from the original part scores, which has led some researchers to conclude that they were taken from a lost Passion composed by Bach for Good Friday 1717.
Does anyone else hear the same characteristic style of orchestration like in "Kommt ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen" in the background of the first aria? 😳
There are some tunes that make people feel sad and wistful each time they listen to them . What is the favorite and wistful tunes in your heart ? From chaotic Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun where people are hustle and bustle with increasing Coronavirus infection and heatstroke in hellish heat .
I pitiful man, I slave of sin, I go before the face of God with fear and trembling for judgment. He is righteous, I am unjust. I pitiful man, I slave of sin! I have acted against God and that same path that He has prescribed for me, I have not travelled. Where? Shall I choose the wings of the dawn for my flight, that will take me to the utmost ocean, yet the hand of the Almighty shall find me and bind the switch of sin for me. Alas yes! Even if Hell contained a bed for me and my sins, yet the wrath of the Highest would be there. The earth does not shield me, it threatens to devour me with monsters; and if I wished to soar to heaven, God lives there, who speaks the judgment against me. Have mercy! Let tears soften You, let them reach into Your heart; may, for the sake of Jesus Christ, the zeal of Your anger be quieted! Have mercy! Have mercy! However now I am comforted, I will not stand before judgment and rather before the throne of grace I go to my holy Father. I hold His Son up to Him , His Passion, His Redemption, how He, for my guilt, has paid and done enough, and pray Him for mercy, from henceforth I will do no more. Then God will take me into His grace again. Although I have been separated from You, yet I return again; even so Your Son set the example for us through His anguish and mortal pain. I do not deny my guilt, but Your grace and mercy is much greater than the sin that I constantly discover in me.
Beautiful work of all concerned. I would suggest that the organ and orchestra be toned down for a future performance. In this performance the very expressive tenor's voice seemed to struggle in the top, and the lower range disappeared.

Mine was through the Swingle Singers. Brian.

@@phwbooth Swingle Singers brought the joy of Bach and Bach church hymns amplified the faith. Thank you for reminding me.
I was smitten by Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D minor (on 78 rpm record). Wandered off for many years to discover Mozart et al. Now am back to Bach!

Another excellent performance, for which, many thanks. Time, perhaps, for me to acknowledge the superb recording standards, both visual and aural.

Sublime
Regret, guilt, self-loathing. They are part of us today as they were back then.
Voor mij altijd troost en balance
leggendo questi commenti ci si rende conto che la musica è versmennte un linguaggio universale.
Rigtig skøn og melodisk musik og en flot solosang ......
Welch herrliche Tenorstimme!
