An off-side is when a player receives a pass from his teammate and there are less than 2 players from the other team between the player that received the pass and the goal. (The Goalkeeper counts) This moment counts when the pass is executed by the player who is passing the ball. So, you need at least the goalkeeper and one more player from the other team between you and the goal for you to not be off-side. But if the player who's passing the ball to you is ahead of you on the field and he's passing the ball to you, who's behind him on the field, then this rule of a required amount of players between you and the goal doesn't count and you're not off-side, even if there is no one from the other team between you and the goal.
