This was definitely the best episode of Michael Palin's wonderful trip around in 80 days. Happy 78 birthday Michael!
This is definitely the best episode of the 1989 Around The World series. Just Michael on a small boat traveling from Arabia to India for eight days. Michael brought back the romance and adventure of travel.
They knew it was good so they devoted a whole episode to the dhow. Boat
Loved this series and the guys from Gujarat giving Micheal and
the team a lift to Mumbai from Dubai. He went and revisited them 20 yrs later, some of the crew had passed on. They shared everything with him and his team. He was touched by that and my fellow gujariti Muslims did us proud.
This was the best episode ever. Very basic transportation, yet very dependable and with a wonderful Gujarati crew. Especially the old fellow. I am glad I have this and the whole documentary on dvd.
He has definitely inspired me; before I watched his shows and read his books, I could have simply lived and died in my house, and it would have been perfectly fine with me, if I were comfortable. Not now; I want to see the world, meet the people, and experience everything. Thanks Michael!

Mom and I enjoyed watching this together when it first aired on PBS.
An extraordinary episode on the dhow. I'n not sure todays 'famous people' would allow themselves to be this disconnected. 2:53 is so spot on. Then, and now.

Didn't Michael see the captain again on another series?
Yes - "Around the World in 20 years". It was a single episode broadcast as a one-off special at Christmas 2008. He also met some of the other crew members at the Captain's house. Anwar, the cabin boy who was crushing the Chillies in this film had become a Captain himself. Well worth watching. Hope this helps.
