Kate Smith recorded those offensive songs in the early 30s, when racism was rampant in the entertainment industry. Who’s next? Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, Shirley Temple, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland? They’ve all done racist things in their careers. Why are we picking on Kate, a proud democrat who believed in equality for all? What happened to historical context? The Flyers should be ashamed.
To the moderator, thank you for your post. This is not only happening to Kate Smith, but also people like Laura Ingalls Wilder and Father Junipero Serra. I cannot answer in such a short post. Suffice to say there is something ominous going on. Beauty, truth and virtue are under attack by ideological forces that are not good for the country. Thank you for these songs for they remind us of the past where beauty was appreciated more.
I am a liberal and have always loved Kate Smith and always will. Yes those 2 songs were racist Kate later in her career never sang them again either. I think she was being unfairly judged , remember she was a young singer when those songs were sung and the film studios and record companies told you what to sing or else you didn't get paid. Fine example is Frank Sinatra being forced to sing garbage like Mama Will Bark because Colombia Records and Mitch Miller was his boss. Once freed of those restraints Sinatra never sang it again , neither did Kate Smith sing that foolishness either. Kate Smith didn't live in the past musically ,as she was game for any song of the era. Just my take
The only thing sadder than the fact that there are people so deeply ignorant and frankly just plain stupid as to troll through 90 year old songs looking for something to whine about is that we live in a country run by cowardly fools who pander to them.
I don't see how anyone could find any fault with the beautiful song sung by one of the finest singers in the world. If you see ugliness in this, you surely hate butterflies.
I remember running home after school each day to watch The Kate Smith Show. That was in the mid-50’s. My house was 1 1/2 miles and there no school buses then so I would get there just in time. Black and white TVs only, a Philco 14” screen. I didn’t have time to change into my play clothes until my program was over. To this day, I still like her and listen to my favorite songs-“God Bless America” and “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain”. I was about 9-10 years old and am 80 now
Me too. I used to carry kerosene up three sets of stairs for an elderly lady every afternoon after school. I was 9 or 10 years old in 1949, 50. Every day I got to her house exactly at 4 p.m. when she opened the door for me this song greeted me from her small TV set. I am 84 now and still fondly remember that wonder time, as you do.
It is quite easy - no matter what the subject, no matter how good, decent, positive, cheerful it may be, you will always have a few sour-assed malcontents who believe that someone gives a damn about what they think....I am with you, buddy!!
Kate Smith was one of the best vocalists ever 👏 ❤! Whenever I hear GOD BLESS AMERICAN, it is Kate's voice I want to hear 👂 🙏 ❤. A beautiful spirit and a true PATRIOT! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
What a wonderful voice Kate had. Notice the sincerety--a genuine American. I remember back in 1936, we were at a motel outside Detroit and the tavern next door was open all night and the patrons kept putting their nickels into the "juke-box" to hear Kate singing "When the moon comes over the mountain"!! Aren't we fortunate to be able to capture that great voice so that future generations can appreciate that talent?
My grandma used to babysit me a lot. She would drive me home at night and sing this while we looked at the moon. I 100% believed she made the song up. Just recently I had the sense to UA-cam it. So glad I did. I miss her so much ❤😢
I was a very little girl watching television I was so happy to hear this beautiful song for the first time. As an elder, I enjoy singing along with her. I am grateful the she introduced, God Bless America.
That was a different time, mentality and culture. She was regarded as a treasure, and that she was. Pure American, patriotic, and for everyone in the country.
Mrs Petra Lino, our teacher in 6th grade, now deceased, taught us this song in 1974 together with When It's Springtime in The Rockies and tho it is an old song by then, we loved it and everyday we sang it before ckasses ended in the afternoon. I heard my Mom humming it and so I look it up on UA-cam. Am glad it's here and I feel Nostalgic listening to it like I'm 12 years old once again. I miss my childhood days and my classmates. My Best Regards to them all wherever they are now. Today is Oct 3, 2020.
When I was, maybe 4 years-old, I remember that Kate Smith had an afternoon show on television back in the early 1950's. I remember that she always closed the show by singing this song. I thought it was beautiful then and I still feel that way. Thanks for posting this.
So thrilling to hear a young Kate sing her theme song from 1931. As for the ridiculous racism accusation, The Kate Smith Commemorative Society has much memorabilia in video and in her own written words that proves without a doubt that Kate was not a racist!
My grandfather who passed a way 4 years ago, used to sing this to me. It was his version though. I had a form of Colic or something when I was little and I would cry for 2 hours each night for MONTHS, but when he came over everything would be fine and I would calm down when he would sing this song.
Thank you for this lovely song by the wonderful Kate Smith. She always had such a kind, charming manner about her. I wish that our modern performers and shows were so respectful to themselves and their audiences. Thank you for sharing!
When I was five years old I had Rheumatic Fever and was confined to my hospital bed except to go to the bathroom. I watched the Kate Smith show every chance I could and this was her closing song. I remember it often because of the fantastic lyrics. When the moon comes over the mountain I will be thinking of you John.
'When The Moon Comes over the Mountain' was Kate's theme song. Tonight is a Full Moon here in Ontario, Canada, I noticed it as I parked my car to night. A retired Catholic priest in Canada. She was a good & great lady. Apparently she was content with her hair style...very simple and plain. Perhaps that indicated her life style as well. An American Idol, truly! RIP
Such beautiful words are shared here! Memories of childhood, grandparents, a more rooted life. I was part of it all having been born in 1945. Her TV show was one of 3 or 4 we had. Each was 15 minutes long! That was all the TV that was broadcasted! When the shows became 30 minutes long it was a big deal! We didn't have much of it but it was all good! I don't even have TV now: never could find anything decent! I read and watch movies on UA-cam Or Netflix. THANK YOU, Kate, for the music, memories, and sweetness. I repeat: you have NOT been forgotten! Your songs are second nature to so many of us! Rest In Peace, dear lady! ❤️
BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES,ARE MADE OF THIS. SO BEAUTIFUL A TIME IN AMERICA,THAT WILL NEVER BE AGAIN...SO BEAUTIFUL...SO SAD..I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND MY COMMENT? GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL HER CHILDREN....AMEN.
Born 1964, however, I was blessed with wonderful grandparents with whom I spent many, many weekends. Kate Smith was a staple in their household, and I reaped the benefits. When I am missing my grandparents, I listen to Kate Smith.
Kate was loved by the public. She was probably the most successful singer of pop songs. She never married. Her weight never seemed to matter to her public.
Tippi Hedren's memoir brought me here. Tippi Hedren is one of my favorite actresses from the 1960s. I remember when I first saw her in Hitchcock's The Birds, I was immediately captivated by her beauty and most of all, her acting style which showed that this is a woman of the kind of elegance and mannerisms that you don't see very much these days. I read up a bit about her and how she helped a lot of Vietnamese women who were running from their country during the war there, by introducing them to manicures. That's what made me even MORE interested in her. So the next time you walk by a nail salon, think of Tippi Hedren. In her memoir, which I have the readers advanced copy. The book will be released November 1st this year. Anyway, in her memior, she mentions how this was her favorite song when she was little. And that's what brought me here. 😊
My mother loved her voice, and always had to hear her, when she could. My best friend, Claire, and I had to remember for some reason, and I am very happy to have found it.
I remember telling Santa Claus when I was in 1st grade back in 1952 I had to hurry home so I can hear Kate Smith sing when the moon comes over the mountain
My mom and I were fans of the Kate Smith show, She was a great singer. I remember "God Bless America" each weekday before I started going to kindergarten
Solid voice! Great range. She’s a great singer. I came by a little cowboy songs book in my closet from 1936 and the first song is one by Kate Smith Harry Woods and Howard Johnson. So I looked it up on UA-cam and I found quite a gem. Thanks 🙏
This brings back such wonderful memories.. I was part of a piano/violin duet that played at a big steak house downtown MANY years ago and we almost always opened the first set with this and closed the last set with "May the Good Lord Bless and Keep you"... such incredible music, thanks for the posting!
I remember her show coming and always loved to hear her sing. She had a beautiful voice..every time I heard this song I would think of my Mom and Dad, thanks for sharing this site.
to all the naysayers about Kate Smith and her rep and accomplishments, she alone sold more than ONE BILLION dollars of war bonds.during WW2...Not even Bob Hope came close. She also NEVER turned down a request to sing at a hospital or go on a battlefield singing tour
On the flip side of this recording was "Two Hearts That Pass In The Night". Lyrics written by Forman Brown of Yale Puppeteers and Turnabout Theater. I'm sorry that it is no longer available on UA-cam. Certainly after nearly seventy years, it should be in public domain. Forman Brown wanted his music heard, especially after he died in 1996.

@@efrem1 What about the Gish sisters and John Wayne? There is something evil afoot.

No one sings it like Kate Smith.
She was a big lady, with a heart to match. She was a true patriot.
My first day on news talk radio, as a female host, i will be giving tribute to this woman today
How did the show go?
My grandma loved this song.
Wonderful Kate Smith

Wonderful childhood memories listening to Kate Smith with my Aunt Irene . . .
This was my grandmother's favorite song. Coincidentally, her name was also Irene.
How could anyone give this a thumbs down ??? Kate Smith was an American Treasure.

Always envied the Philadelphia Flyers for having Ms. Smith sing God Bless America before every home game.

I work in a nursing home and a resident sang this chorus on a loop . I am so glad I looked this up so I could hear the whole song, so lovely!
