  • What's up, people! I'm back with another reaction, and this time we listen to a solo Marc Almond tune for the first time, and this is actually a request from hero of the channel (or chample! ;) Kim, who said she wouldn't mind seeing a reaction to a song from Marc's 2001 Stranger Things album. I was struck by the uplifting nature of this one, and indeed, it feels a million miles away from where he and Dave were in 1984. In fact, I mentioned this briefly at the start of the song but was meaning to say more in the outro but forgot to get back to it----Marc's singing reminds me a lot of Andy Bell here, and even the song has a bit of an Erasure feel. In any case, join me as we listen to a really sweet tune from one of my favorite singer-songwriters. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on UA-cam and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on UA-cam, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

"Feelings wider than the sky surround me on all sides, gently floating down in a symphony of sound." This song is the sunrise of a new day. This song is that first ray of sunlight cracking through the storm clouds. This song is about adversity, love and the strength to find your way past the bad times back into the good. I love this song!
For the album Stranger Things, Marc worked with some Icelandic producers/writers, and he wrote Glorious with Johann Johannsson and Petur Hallgrimsson. The song was going to be on their album under the band name Lhooq, but Marc tweaked the lyrics and did his version. I don't know if they ever did record it, but a couple more of their songs did end up on Stranger Things. And the backing vocal here is done by another band member Sara Gudmundsdottir. Quick aside: Lhooq also included Emiliana Torrini, and her own version of a Marc-covered track, Love in the Time of Science, shows up on her album of that same name (but the song has a different title!) which was produced by Roland Orzabal. Just covering all the bases to include more of Hand Solo's favorites!
I like the electronic sound of the song and the rhythmic nature of it. And of course, I love Marc's vocal. And yes, it is quite different, jumping from Soft Cell's This Last Night in Sodom to this. Marc has been both prolific and eclectic! And one more thing about the lyrics. Make of them what you will. I can see how some would takes this as being deeply religious. I'm not at all religious, and don't think of this song in that way at all, but I still find it an inspirational and hopeful. And guess what? Marc Almond really isn't religious either!
    Thanks for playing this, Matt!

Kim! Thanks again for sharing this and everything else. And that’s interesting about the lyrics. I also am non-religious and would have hypothesized Marc was too, but I did take the lines I heard more or less at face value here. Cheers for indicating it could be more figurative. And what a beautiful symphony of sound, indeed! Looking forward to more solo Marc.

@@mattsnider2667 Stranger Things was reissued in 2010 as a 2-disc set, and again in 2022 with 3 discs full of not only the original album but also bonus tracks and live versions of songs. Marc talks about Glorious in the expanded liner notes of that version, saying how this song was meant to be a Lhooq song and he "re-wrote the lyrics a bit." So it could be the original lyrics are not even Marc's, and he made changes for his version. In an interview back in 2001 with Billboard, Marc talked about doing something more "uplifting" and referred to Glorious as "a hymn about inspiration and optimism."
And since I looked up a little more after writing my initial comment, I noticed I made a switch with Johann Johannsson's band names. Glorious was indeed going to be a Lhooq song, and then two other tracks meant for Johann's band Dip were used for Stranger Things (Come Out and Love in the Time of Science).
And whenever you want to do more Marc, his first album outside of Soft Cell was Untitled, done as Marc and the Mambas, and it's different yet! Drive 2! 😃

I’ll give you the Andy Bell comparison, in tone, to a degree. I’ve not heard much solo Marc Almond, but this is quite a mature vocal from him, just misses the edge Andy Bell has 😁

Marc’s solo career is quite eclectic and can chance drastically from one album to the next but this type of song is something that he excels at and he can be found returning to over and over again, some that have become hugely popular. This one should have been a bigger hit than it was. The video is how shall I say it…..Glorious. I suppose it does have an Andy Bell quality especially Andy’s solo album.
