Escalante South Backpacking full enhanced version, Coyote Gulch, Stevens Arch, view of Monument Valley, Capitol Reef, Utah, view of Lake Powell in 4k Ultra HD with My Own Frontier.
This is the full version of the Escalante South route created by Steve Allen, that I did with my buddy Joey of My Own Frontier in the fall of 2019. Since I am not able to get out there and record new videos because of, I have spent time and enhanced the colors and stabilization of the previous two part videos and made it into one full and much better looking video. Discovering a Hidden Oasis in a Remote Desert Canyon.
We did Coyote Gulch, Crack in the Wall, Stevens Arch, Stevens Canyon, The Baker Trail, WaterPocket Fold, Cliff, Georges Camp Canyon, Escalante River, Ezra MC bench, Fools Canyon, Kings Bench and climbed out Jacob Hamblin arch to finish an epic loop. There had been no rain in over 100 days when we did the trip, so water was a main concern, there were also multiple 4+ and lower 5 class scrambles and climbs that where challenging with heavy packs. We used maps from National Geographic and Steve Allens Canyoneering 2 book for navigation, as well as the Alltrails app for gps location. Gear from Osprey, Arcteryx, La Sportiva, Fjallreven, REI, Marmot, Mountian Hardwear, Paria Outdoors, Bergans of Norway and MSR. Inspired by Michael Kelly, Steve Allen, Lars Monsen, Roal Amundsen and many more...

Absolutely stunning! Jarl and Joey, my favorites.
What a crew you guys make. Lots of fun to watch, and great videography. I love your humble and easy-going manner in handling the complex route-finding and exposed scrambling. You remind me of myself and my 3 decades of similar trips to the slickrock country. It is my favorite part of the world. Escalante River, Choprock Canyon, Moody Creek, Dirty Devil, Navaho Creek, Kaibito Creek, West Canyon, Face Canyon, Aztec Creek, Oak Canyon, Bridge/Cliff Canyon, etc, etc. Some of these areas had no nearby trailheads, so my bunch from Tucson would sometimes hire a boat to drop us off somewhere on Lake Powell and pick us up a week later in a different spot, so we could check out the lower parts of the tributary canyons and benchlands. I finally gave it up in 2018 at the age of 70. Thanks for letting me relive those halcyon days.

Been wanting to do Coyote Canyon via The Crack. You and Joey made it even more enticing. I can nearly visualize the route in my mind's eye without ever having been there. great video. Good to see Joey out there again too. Water... Water... Water!

That land is so beautiful and unforgiving. Nice view of the Henry's and lake on the high ridge. You were out there. I liked the peyote music. I always feel like I'm on a vision quest out there with Navajo mountain always in view. I wish not to turn into a crow after I get back to the vehicle...
Yes, agreed, its a magic land, I wish I could be out there more often, always following Jamal Greens videos from the area and seeing there is so much to explore that I havent even thought about

Amazing walls in this journey Jarl. Glad you were able to access water. The overlook from the top of the Baker trail was inspired. Watching this made me want to re-watch your journey with Joey to Death Hollow, another extraordinary canyon with fantastic views after you came up on top.

Absolutly fantastic, my husband and me did a roundtrip in Coyote Gulch in 2012 with start at crack in the wall and goin out at Jacob Hamblin Arch with noch alternative. This climbing out i will remember all my life, it was horrible for me. So you did some more spectacular routes. Great stuff, thank you.

This was too much spectacular for me to handle. Thanks for the tour. I still hike but after new knees and being a fossil somethings I better no longer try. I worked too much and should have done more while young. Those kids get in the way sometime but no regrets. Joey was a fantastic companion. He has a great aura. Next time less us see some things like food and equipment. What shoes you both used ? Why no trekking poles. Those kind of personal things are also interesting. Thanks so much for the tour. It was almost like I was there.
Thank you Jeff! I am doing more camp oriented videos these days as well. The equipment is not really of much consequense, Joey always use what he has at hand and I have been tending to go with La sportiva shoes. Trekking poles are in the way and messes with my balance.

Actually in Escalante I filmed with and iPhone 7+ but I Have since switched to 11 Pro Max for every video I did after that, filming in 4k, and now also 60fps. Hope you are both well!

Watched just being curious about the Stevens canyon bypasses and ended up staying for the whole thing, really beautiful you guys rocked it, watching the "crux" made me so anxious and I love that tarantula getting the right of way, escalante is my home yet you both have experienced it in a way I have yet to see, always welcome hearts like yours good job

That is awesome, it is confusing for sure, not any trails out there, especially the part from Cliff and down to the Escalante is very confusing, actually the part from the Escalante and over to Fools canyon is also confusing haha, you need to read Steve Allens book very carefully together with a Topo map to figure it out.

I was out at Canyonlands Needles shooting my own video that same week as this trip and I can attest to the dryness of S. Utah at the time. I think at one point I was portaging 10 liters. Ouch. Lovely video, digging the style, I've gotta watch your other stuff now!

Wow. Cool video!! I love backpacking, but I don't have the guts to hike any of these canyons in Utah. The thought of flash-floods freaks me out, and the climbing doesn't help. I'll leave it to those who have more courage than me!

Hey Amos, great running into you and talking to you, it appears that there has been a major incident in the swell yesterday, the day we were meant to head back out, luckily we hiked by night and made it out on Sunday!
@@NorwegianXplorer Wow great to hear you are both ok. I wonder if it rained in the Swell itself or if it was a faraway storm that snowballed down the drainage?
Sadly I heard a child got swept away this week in a flash flood in LWH canyon :(
Tragedies like that are a good reminder to take appropriate precautions.
I see that Steve Allen's book on SRS is still available. I'm guessing that is where you learned of the Muddy Creek/Cistern Canyon route?
@@BackpackerDiaries I think the storm hit right on top of the swell and Goblin Valley, I watched it from HW24 as I was leaving Hanksville, really sad and tragic what happened to the 2 girls! Steve Allens books are a great inspiration for sure, is routes are very cool!

Thank you, he used a steripen for this trip I believe, I used a Sawyer filter, but if there are living things in the water it usually means its healthy and nothing to worry about.
Dude your so lucky you have someone who could help with the route. I wanna hike here so bad but little nervous about route finding. I have Steve Allen’s book but still. I have tons of experience hiking in Grand Canyon but I want to get out and do more
I basically had the whole route figured out on my maps before we went, Joey brought the book and we referenced something every now and then, I spend weeks with the maps and books before we go to make sure things feel right, it is a bit tricky to figure some of it out for sure!

@@vantage1499 He is not too concerned about the bugs no, I can tell you that I am though lol, thats why I use the tent, but would love to try cowboy camping, just not sure I would get enough sleep.

17:00 There's a concept in the biosciences called the Law of the Minimum: that necessary item which is in least supply controls growth. In arid regions, water is that thing. Its availability at any particular spot controls growth...and attracts attention. A pool which would not attract a second glance in water-rich regions becomes a place to visit and gets a name in an arid region.
It does, its a pretty cool grotto with a hanging arch though

Another great video by Jarl. I would love to see a map of this route. I understand the Stevens, and Baker route, but then it got confusing for me. So I guess you are essentially following Steve Allen's route 21? Epic. Glad you found water up on Cliff. Having Joey in your video is entertaining. His personality is great combined with yours.
Thank you, this is the route from Allens Canyoneering 2 book, «Escalante South», it is a bit confusing to follow from after Cliff, but I think we were able to follow the route pretty accuratly the whole way.

Yeah, I am always relieved when we find the right way, but route finding is a lot of fun, also knowing that not many people get to see Georges Camp Canyon and similar, I miss being in a remote place like that right now:-)
@@NorwegianXplorer Well at least you were able to at that time. I fear I may never be allowed such a thing. Work, and raising a family restricts my ability to take that much time off. I have been to Coyote Gulch, and just part way up Stevens, many other places in the Escalante area, but taking a trip of that length will never happen for me. I often go to West Clear Creek, Arizona near me to escape, because my time is not taken up with driving. It is a long wilderness canyon where you have to swim to gut down the canyon. You put all your stuff in dry bags and float your pack. It is very beautiful and someone like you would love it. I have a blog called Arizona Jones (that I no longer keep up with) that has some trip descriptions. Hope this Covid thing ends soon so you will be free to travel. You seem like a nice guy. Maybe some day I will meet you out in the wild.
That sounds a like a cool trip, I have been fortunate to run my own schedule my whole life through working in the music industry and I have gotten better at taking time off to do what I love to do, being in the outdoors. No snakes, I have only seen one in canyon country, and it was not a dangerous one. The ledges where really cool, a bit scary but manageable:-)
Too cold for snakes that time of year, they're all hibernating.
Rattle snakes love pools of water to cool and eat rodents that come for a drink. Michigan

Canyon hoping looks a bit too dangerous for what you accomplish. Tetons look safer and more miles per day. One slip and your backpacking days are over. Michigan

@@NorwegianXplorer Because of the extra weight and the extra bulk when you don't need it.
I know tents don't weigh much but they do take up space. Personally, I'd prefer using that space/weight to carry an extra luxury or two.
Plus, there's a magic in relaxing in your bag and looking up at a star filled night and not at the ceiling of a tent. :-)
