I saw them first in 79, I've seen them over 30 times since multiple times on the same tour including one of the shows at Giants stadium in 89. I like how you gave them justice in what's going on now, I appreciate that, some people wanted to dismiss them as old, they are old, but they still rock
What I wouldn’t give to hear one of my kids say that!! There’s this Adult Swim show called Joe Pera which is brilliant (now on HBO Max) and we just saw one recently where Joe discovers Baba O’Riley for the first time and it’s hilarious. My kids did enjoy that… Thanks for the comment!
Hey! I went to see the Who for the first time in Florida, 2022. I was completely blown away by the amazing performance. I grew up in a middle eastern country, and we didn’t have live shows there. I started listening to the who when I was 15, now I am almost 30, and still listening to them everyday. I never thought I would be able to see them live, but I did. I would 100% go see them again should they tour North America again! Cheers!
100% AGREED!!!! I'm so jealous you got to see The Loon and The Ox together... They must've lit up all of Ontario that night. 🤘🤘🤘 Thanks for the comment!
Great review. The mighty Who have been the soundtrack to my life since ‘65…..an English kid, Townshend wrote about and for me. From Can’t Explain to Beads On One String, sheer brilliance. And live shows that to this day make you walk out a foot taller than when you went in 🎸🎼
I love hearing that!! And great way of describing the feeling you get after seeing them. Something I’ve been thinking recently is that I never quite understood when people cry after their favorite performer dies, as if the celebrity was actually someone they knew, but that Pete has had such a huge emotional impact on me that I likely will lose it when he’s gone. I get it now. Thanks so much for sharing, Steve!
Great video! I saw them in 82 the first time (wish I could have seen Keith!). I've seen them every chance i got after that in Dallas and OKC. 2022 tour is still great! Your video is awesome. I couldn't say it any better!
In 1989 The Who played for three and a half hours with an interval. There was a huge band onstage and Pete played acoustic guitar most of the night. In retrospect it was a Las Vegas version of The Who. Fortunately I saw them in 1975, 1979, 1982, 1989 and four or five times after that.
In fairness, the reason for having so many musicians on the 1989 tour and Pete being confined to acoustic was he was having hearing problems (tinnitus). Pete told the others he could only do the tour if they didn't go over 100db. Roger's solution was to just turn down John Entwistle, but Pete said if they did that, they'd lose all the harmonics John created in his playing and they'd need to "fill the air" with other instruments.
I saw them in 1982 during the first “Farewell Tour” ( still have the sticker !” At Shea Stadium. They were fantastic as well as the next 8 times I have seen them . The last being in 2016. Sadly it is time . We all get old it’s inevitable. They should call it a day now and go out on top! Same with Sir Paul after his great Glastonbury gig last summer which surprised everyone. Elton just called it a day tour wise and Rod says he will too. I think the Stones will give it one more go because Jagger is crazy insane young at his age and sounds fantastic. Keith is a medical miracle!
I have not had the pleasure of seeing them during their present tour.I have no doubt that the music is excellent but let's not pretend that they are anything like the presence and energy of the original Who. I saw the 'Orrible 'Oo in 1970,1971 and 1976.That was the real Who and they were without doubt the greatest live band of all.The volume, presence and musicianship was second to none!
The Who are my favorite band of all time. I can listen to all their songs and not get sick of them. There is just something different about them compared to any other band. At their live peak they were the best live band with the best live album of all time. Saw them in 97, 02 and 06. The 02 concert was by far the best with the band being the tightest at this show with Daltrey sounding great and Townshend was playing absolutely awesome. He was on fire. That being said, to be honest I think they should call it a day. Daltrey's voice hasn't really sounded good in the last 15 years. Even Pete doesn't sing like he used to. He has always been a high energy player and I haven't seen that as much in recent years. Actually the whole band. No more Pino and no more Rabbitt. I realize we all get old, but gosh sometimes their recent performances are just downright painful to listen to. I would respectfully say guys, it's time to call it a day.
Oh well I thought it was a great show of course it’s different they are in middle 70’s with a orchestra it still better then anything else touring right now music is crap these days . There sound is original and superior sound sure they are older but worth the money if you don’t like don’t go and certainly don’t complain cause it’s irrelevant…🎉
Pete has always predicted the future within his music. Roger has always presented it beautifully. Not forgetting John and Keith. It was a perfect combination! Just look back through their music, you'll understand everything I have said.
I saw them last October and if it was their very last tour then I am VERY glad I saw them when I did. When they announced the tour dates in early 2022 and the tickets went on sale I pondered if I should splurge on tickets for me and my dad. I’m glad I did.
Great insight . My Journey with this incredible band has spanned now over 40 years to say the least IT has been an amazing journey . From May 1980 Toronto to this past October 2022 Toronto. When they farewell in 1982 I somehow new you could not keep this great act down . Will there be one more show I sure hope so ❤️🎸 Long Live THEWHO
I would love to see them do one more tour as just a rock band. While the orchestra lightens the load on the musicians to the point that Pete feels like participating, the acoustic WGFA with just Pete and Roger still blew me away last time I saw them. I think they should do one more proper band tour and then hang it up. They earned it.
Was at the 2022 Toronto show, what an experience! Great sound, F’in loud in a good way! And when there’s a Hot Violinist, how can one say they’re done😅
I hope the same. I went to see The Who, at MSG, New York, in May 2019, hoping to hear músic from by then, their soon to be released WHO album. They did a good show but only played one, never before played song, from their catalogue, and that was "Imagine a Man".
As a lifelong Who fanatic , seen them with Moonie ,then 82,89,96 and 2013, it is TIME. Love you guys and you are playing well but go out still rocking. Roger will be 79 on March 1. Just go out on top..Don't try to hit 80 and just fall down...Don't tempt fate. Been doing it since 64. It's time to really and truly say adios.

Well I’ll give them their due… put out some great stuff … and great shows…. If you were lucky enough to see them in the 70’s you saw the best live band…period!
I admit, I was attracted by your provocative title and expecting some nastiness. I agree completely with your review! I have been a lifelong fan of the band and first saw then as a teenager in 1980. I too have been through all of the farewell tours, the reunions, the post-John tours and even the legendary one-off Pixelon show in Vegas in 1999. I've seen them right around 20 times, most recently both of their shows in Vegas at the end of this tour. I have to say I thought it was truly over after seeing their residency at Caesar's a few years ago. But the shows with the orchestra on this tour took on a new meaning, seemed relevant, held up. Aside from Pete being his normal bitchy self about touring, they seemed at ease. I DO now think that may have been the last time to see them live, but who knows. Whatever they decide to do, I'll show up. Thanks for your insights!
Thank you for the lovely comments!!! I agree with everything you said and am super jealous you got to see them so many times! There’s a maturity in the writing of Quadrophenia that just goes one step beyond what he did on Tommy.
Great reflection and review! Now that I think of it, it really is amazing how the songs have lasted. I never want to be that Boomer who says the music of my youth is better than the music of your youth, but I will say, this is pretty good music😊
Well done piece here, thanks! I really can't imagine them giving up until they just physically can't play anymore. I hope they do at least one more tour, preferably stripped down. I don't really care much for the orchestra. Seems to constrict the energy a bit. Not that they sound bad, but it's a bit less reckless than tours from not that long ago.
Thank you, Dave!! And yes, I agree on the orchestra. They performed a few songs in the middle of the set without them, so you get Simon and Pete more out in front. Thanks again!!
I am 26 and my first concert was in 06. I took my father to see the who in vegas a few weeks ago. They have never sounded this good post entwistle in my opinion. My thoughts are that the Who Are finished doing long big production tours. But I don't think they are done performing. Pete and Roger have been performing since their detour years for 60 years. My prediction is we will see some sporadic shows next year and in 2024 through 25 they will have a mini tour in the UK and maybe parts of the US celebrating their 60th year under the name The Who (health permitting). I dont see this tour having lots of shows or a huge production. In the studio I can see us getting 1 or 2 new celebration singles like they we recieved during the who hits 50 tour. I also think the record company will keep reassuring their albums and opening up the vaults. My prediction is by 2025 we will have the Who's Next super deluxe along with super deluxe editions of By Numbers, and Who Are You (compeleting the original bands discography). We will also have all of the planned john entwistle Ox Exhumed series and maybe a reissue or 2 of Roger's CDs I don't believe we will get another WHO record again, though I know Pete wants to finish the music for age of anxiety so who knows.
I LOVE this comment!! I hope all your predictions come true. Age of Anxiety was a bonkers book. Would be amazing to see what he composes for that. Thanks for the comment!
