They were excellent for their era. I fear that time might just might have come and gone. Would be delighted to shown to be wrong but MANPADS are so numerous and advanced now I cannot see how the risk of deploying them can be justified. Time will tell.
Very nice, my own Dutch airforce is now also receiving their first AH-64E Longbow Apache's. The first one had it's take off a few days ago. Can't wait to photograph them! Let's hope these Apache's will also visit RIAT, Fairford in July

Even the A model had rescue attachments. The idea was that if one aircraft were to go down in a pair, a wounded guy could be placed in the gunner seat while the gunner attached himself to a ring on the outside. The other person in the downed Apache can be attached to another ring. Snipers work in pairs so they might be inserted or extracted that way. The down side, is the Apache can't use it's rockets or missiles because they could hurt those people when fired.

That is an Apache (Long Bow). It means it can stick the (Mast) out and keep the aircraft hidden. The (Mast) Radar dome allows it to sight and target in communication with others. The Hellfire mk4 goes up then down and keeps the concealment of the aircraft. The Russians want the KA thingy to do the same however it has to hold position to laser the target. Yeah..
The E model can control up to 2 drones from over 70 miles away making them lethal in high threat environments. The Apache can stay the same and can become more lethal with increases in drone technology.
We have so many different types of helicopters that it becomes cheaper to buy "off the shelf" to fit this role. This Apache is tailor-made to UK requirements

Like I mentioned in my other comment, we have multiple types of helicopters in service. The Apache fits the role perfectly and seems pointless to attempt to build a competitor model. As for your comment about aspiring youth, let me point out that all the Apache helicopters are maintained and serviced by British service personnel, as I briefly considered being an aircraft technician in the British Army when the Apache's were first brought into service. I'm pretty sure that British talent is involved in the design of the new Apache as it holds a lot of our technology, in the same way that the Japanese involvement in the Tempest program, will see the Japanese add their own technology to their versions of Tempest. Trust me, there are no shortage of vacancies for suitably trained young British designers within the countless British Military suppliers.

wow, it has "stealthy" features to minimise it's radar cross section, well it's a shame there are four spinning rotors on the top which light up radar returns like no tomorrow... it has better range which is really good, but it sacrifices A-G loadout to have some A-A capability. Apache can carry a far heavier A-G payload, along with a Fire Control Radar which can scan targets to be engaged simultaneously- this is a huge advantage for the apache. not to mention, apache is well combat tested and upgrades make it the most potent threat.@@felixmourlevat44

Ukraine has downed a number of Russian KA 52's. I'm sure the Russians won't be quaking in their boots facing this helicopter knowing a couple of their Manpads will make it fall like a stone.
Apaches fire without line of site. They also have a "whisper mode" while hovering where you can't hear them. Apaches can hut targets 3 miles away hiding behind buildings or hills. Russia in gunships can't do that. They don't even have GPS built in. Lol

wow, it has "stealthy" features to minimise it's radar cross section, well it's a shame there are four spinning rotors on the top which light up radar returns like no tomorrow... it has better range which is really good, but it sacrifices A-G loadout to have some A-A capability. Apache can carry a far heavier A-G payload, along with a Fire Control Radar which can scan targets to be engaged simultaneously- this is a huge advantage for the apache. not to mention, apache is well combat tested and upgrades make it the most potent threat.@@felixmourlevat44

Helicopters are not a nightmare anymore. They have been shot out by Manpada from operations both by Ukraine and Russia. But nice toys for boys. The drones have come.

Or maybe combination warfare? A mixture of drones, helecopters, fighters, bombers, tanks, long range missiles and ground units. Thats how a modern war is won.
@@jakeh491, when I say drones I mean drone tanks, drone aircraft, drone soldiers - just no people - everything is a drone. And AI is a must as soon as it can be incorporated because the drone is un-jamable with it's own AI and no remote control.
@THESocialJusticeWarrior to a certain extent. Thing is AI and drones will never replace human emotion, human thoughts, human actions. They can replicate it but can't replace it. Plus your thinking a bit further in the future. Furthermore there's ethical issues. We don't know how reliable AI is yet. Without sounding like an idiot, what if they all turn on us? Or what about the civillians on the battlefield?

Ukraine has downed a number of Russian KA 52's. I'm sure the Russians won't be quaking in their boots facing this helicopter knowing a couple of their Manpads will make it fall like a stone.
Are you high. This can target the Manpad operators long before the Apache gets within range.
Apaches fire without line of site. They also have a "whisper mode" while hovering where you can't hear them. Apaches can hut targets 3 miles away hiding behind buildings or hills. Russia in gunships can't do that. They don't even have GPS built in. Lol
