I bought a white metal Countach toy in a bakery store 19 years ago here in Brazil, it was like 1.50 dollars at that time... Hell yeah, developing country but the same dream... sad that the love didn't last, today i'd go with aventador.
Countach; nearly thirty years old in this iteration, over forty years old since its debut and yet still looks like something from the near future. Only Lamborghini has ever done that.
This video is so full of win. Love that ending too, haha. As usual, I agree with everything you said in this video Matt. I've had the privilege of riding in a 1984 Countach twice so I can relate to a lot of what you said about the Countach. I was blown away by how well it handled back roads too. The entire comment section says they'd take the countach, id take the aventador although its close, but I'd take a murcielago over both of them easily.
Countach was 100% Italian. Designed by the great Marcello Gandini. Aventador was built and designed by Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche owned Germans. Not the same.
Nope, the Aventador was designed by Filippo Perini and built in Sant'Agata by italians. The only German things in the Aventador are the ac and the sat nav. The only two things that nobody gives a fuck about when driving a Lambo.
lol - the secretary ending was pretty cool. I also had a countach poster on my wall, a black one with the frontspoiler on top of the hood - like the one the two chick drove in the first cannonball movie.
"A gold iPhone 5S on wheels." That's a great analogy! The Aventador is a lot more refined, comfortable, and has the better build quality. But if I'm buying a supercar, I prefer to buy from the heart, not from the mind. The Countach is just one of those cars that makes me feel like a kid on Christmas.
@HeavyDutyTraining I agree. You probably don't care, but after "The Fast and The Furious", I got into imports. I know, the world existed before the movie. Before the movie my favorite cars were Lamborghini, then the movie got me into the RX-7, but I found out about the cost of maintenance for the Rotary engine, having to replace engine seals every 60,000 miles, a $5000 job. Then in 2003 the Mitsubishi Evolution came to America, and the rest is history. The Evo is in my opinion the ultimate racing car. It has records in Rally, Time Attack, Circuit Racing, Mountain Peak Racing, Drag Racing, and many other Motorsports. Properly modified it can beat pretty much most cars, whether they're production cars, or professional racing cars. And of course I'm talking about street legal cars, not gutted out none street legal racing cars, against those it has its limitations. Even though it's beaten a few gutted out none street legal cars as well.
I love the way the Countache looks, but to me the umatchably beautiful Lamborghini is the Miura. But everybody has their favorite V12 Lambo, and nobody's wrong. They've made so many gorgeous cars.

I remember as a teenager someone in the automotive press called the optional wing on the Countach, the Hyundai. For the same price as the optional wing, you could buy a new Hyundai Excel L for just under $5000. I'd rather have the wing.
Given the choice of the two, I would take the Countach. Modified with the 25th Anniversary body package, better brakes and suspension, ant that little wing that was on the front of the Countach in the movie, Cannonball Run. (That little front wing just added to the bad-ass look.) I much prefer the pure analog experience, and I find that there is NO practical advantage to having the added 300hp, paddle shifting, and AWD. That being said, my favorite Lamborghini is the Miura. Something about the lines just whispers sexy, bedtime things in my ear with a gentle caress and touch of hot breath on the back of the neck... yeah. The only other car that can come close to the Miura in that regard is the Ferrari 308GTS.
There is no comparism here. The Countach had that special qualities about it that made it such an iconic vehicle. It's really like nothing else ever made. Matt brings up an issue that I have been talking about for quite a while now - In an age where 90% of humanity are finding it hard to make a decent living while the 1% are making ridiculous amounts of money, it's very politically incorrect to drive such flashy cars. The inequality today, which can be felt much more in the U.S than in Europe, makes it hard for people to be happy for the good fortune of others. Matt is the best American car reviewer out there. Its very enjoyable to listen to his reviews. All car reviewers report that the Countach has terrible seats, non existent visibility out the back, heavy clutch, heavy brakes, heavy gear change, heavy steering and your legs hit the steering wheel, yet who cares!! It's a Countach and even today it is one of the most outlandish sports cars out there. I live in Israel and I was stunned to see this exact same red Countach in Israel a couple of weeks ago. I would assume that the reason the Aventador and all Lamborghinis do not handle like a Ferrari, Porsche or McLaren is because unlike those three, Lamborghini has no racing expertise to draw off. Harry from Harry's Garage said that Mr Lamborghini (how cool is that name) insisted for some reason on not going into racing. And I agree with Matt - that wing is a must for the Countach and absolutely compliments the outlandish design. The story behind that wing is that Lamborghini only added it to the Countach after the wing was added to the car in the film Cannon Ball Run whereafter all customers wanted to order their Countach with a wing at the back. Apparently since its hard to believe, but the Countach actually has not got a good drag coefficient, Lamborghini designed the wing so that it does not produce any downward force whatsoever (notice that it is completely parallel to the ground and not slanted) so as not to add additional drag to the car which reduces top speed. It's incredible that the design of the Countach already came out in 1974! It must have looked back then like something out of the future. However there is one huge "problem" with the wing shaped design - there are only so many design modifications you can do to a wing design, which is why I cant see how they can make anymore significant design modifications to the Aventador replacement and the Huracan replacement. But we will wait and see. Someone commented that the car looks like it is floating at 4:03. It does! LOL
Same year as the Lancia Stratos, which also looked about ten years ahead of the curve. The presenter pulls off the difficult trick of doing a video of supercars without seeming to gloat about his new toys - he gives the impression that he just loves cars.
Interesting comment and I agree with parts of it. What sucks, is that we live in a word where people do look at you and then wonder "why can't I have that" even if it's something that they don't want. It sucks that living has become, in a way, live for other people. but not by the rules of the road where you drive for the safety of yourself and others, but the kind of rules that have started things like "everyone wins", "everyone receives a passing grade", and so on. I'm a filmmaker and tech and car enthusiast. This past semester, during our short film presentations, I had the best film of the class (production, directing, and writing) and my fellow classmates were pissed. Why? I work hard. This is what I want to do and it shows in my work. why are we as people telling ourselves to lower our standards because it makes other people feel better or doesn't cause rifts? That's sad. I live in LA now. There are Lambos, Ferraris, Porsches, and cars that I've never heard of all over the place. But I don't feel like any one of those drivers/owners are pieces of shit when I see them. i see them and say "good for you. work hard? Then play hard!" I know your comment is from 3 years ago, but it's still present today in 2018. Great comment KNOW HOPE. A great conversation starter. Namaste.
Actually, the wing was originally added by a hard-core Lamborghini owner named Walter Wolf, who had Lamborghini add it to the first three LP 400's he bought: "An optional V-shaped rear wing was available over the rear deck following the popularity generated from the rear wing of the Walter Wolf Countach, which, while improving high-speed stability, reduced the top speed by at least 16 km/h (10 mph)." (from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamborghini_Countach#Walter_Wolf_Countach)
Apparently the spoiler was only put on the Countach because a movie studio put their own spoiler on a Countach they put in a film they made. After the film came out, people started demanding the spoiler as an option from Lambo themselves, so they started doing it officially. But because of that, the thing is engineered to actually create no downforce, because they didn't want to mess with the handling dynamics of the car. All it does is create drag and reduce the top speed by a little bit.
A white Countach 5000 Quatrovalvole with cream interior, a white suite and pretty lady in the passenger seat as you drive off into an oversaturated sunset...
Countach > Aventador. I just love the rear of the Countach so much. That big ass wing really does look good. I believe Jay Leno took his off tho because he said he didn't like It.
I've been watching car videos for a about an hour now. The twin 2.5 years old boys have been playing in the background with no care about what I've been watching. Until the Countach started revving, then they were mesmerized by the V12 sounds and the "fast red car" Even the new generation looks in awe at THE poster supercar!
Maan! Great review! I like your passion about old school and trueness for reviewing the actual car handling and etc. It wasn't a long episode, but it was fulfilled! That's cool! Thanks.
The Miura was the first modern supercar. The Countach was the original poster car. Hell 20+ years after the car released children still have Countach's on their walls.
It's history, I didn't make that shit up. The Miura was a milestone for sure, but the word supercar was first used to describe the countach, not the miura.
hold on mat i am not fighting with u man much respect to u for making these vids i was just implying that all supercars and hypercars owe there thanks to cars like the muira and the countach thank you for the great vids
DaGhostTV I agree with you the Miura is the "grandfather" of cars, but in a very technical sense, the Countach was just the first car to be coined with that very specific word.
AWESOME review, Matt! And I, too, believe that no car before or since has had the same impact as the Lamborghini Countach, either in it's original LP 400 form, or the later LP 5000 QV. If you lined a bunch of super-cars up in front of me, including a brand-new Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and asked me to pick one, I will ALWAYS pick the Lamborghini Countach!
When I was a kid in the 80's I had a framed poster of a Lamborghini Countach in my bedroom. I used to stare at it and dream of what it would be like to drive one. Fast forward several decades and I've worked really hard and I can now proudly say that I don't have that poster anymore but now... I can watch a Lamborghini Countach on youtube.......cause I still can't afford one. Cheers!
"Supercar" was used for the Miura well before the Countach launched. Here in Oz we had the 'Supercar scare', being a media beat up involving the street versions of V8 sedans used in Touring Car racing in '71 & '72 - cars that now can barely keep up with a good FWD hatchback.
I can see mold injecting a customer rear bonnet piece with sinker cavity to raise up the wing via hydraulics to make it both retractable & adjustable for down pressure angling
Where do all the rumors about Countach's being so terrible to drive come from, people that either couldn't handle a mid engine car or that wanted to daily drive them? Jay Leno seems to have the same opinion as you that they're way nicer to drive than everyone says.
Thank you so much smoking tire for give us the name of the song I´ll post this response here so everybody sees it :Thanks Gerardo! Glad you liked the video.
Countach=respect
Aventador= Beast
Countach is beast, because there engines so cool and it's drive really handle, and the body was look good shames! if model 18 inch wheels look cool!..
JDM HK and AZN Dance hip hop fans! huh
Cannonball Run :) Classic Film.
it does increase stability at the top end though so you could actually sustain higher speeds for a longer period of time.
I'll take the reduced top speed for that wing all day. How often do you even top out any car. I find the number wars for top speed stupid.
***** My car has top speed of 99 MPH , I drive often that fast .
I was talking about the supercar world with super high top speeds
I love Matt's reviews. He talks intelligently while being genuine. Why is he not replacing Ruthledge on Top Gear USA?
That show's still on?
What the name of the song lamborgini Countach 11:25 ??? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That Countach in black with those magnesium gold wheels was my poster car and still is!
the 80s soundtrack did it for me!! great vid!! Big fan!
The dream car of my childhood...with wing 100%.
countach one of the top 5 cars ever made imo
I agree with Matt....this was my favorite version of the Countach.
That exhaust note on the Countach is so freakin Awesome, it's sounds more powerful than the Avantador's exhaust note, nice video though.
Matt, you forgot to wear a flower patterned button up shirt while driving the Countach.
I would much rather have that Countach. So much cooler.
yeah i agree
11:24, Song Track?
Does anyone know the trackname?
Countach Song name? please? no one knows what music is?
The last sentence in this video speaks volumes about who is buying what nowadays.
The Lamborghini Countach at 4:02 looks like it is hovering.
Beacause it is.
TheDubaistyle It's magic, isn't it?
engineers don't do maths, they do magic.
LOL TRUE!
A white Countach 5000 Quatrovalvole with cream interior, a white suite and pretty lady in the passenger seat as you drive off into an oversaturated sunset...
Countach still looks awesome.
Matt I loved your comments and conclusions, your analysis was punctual and I really appreciated this vid. Compliments.
You've got great taste and opinions about automobiles. Thats why I love your show!
LOL in the minute 4:02 looks like the car is flying XD i love this car
I'd take the countach, It's just that car i dreamed about when I was young.
But you own an Aventador.
ToxicHorsePucky
I thought it was a murcielago
TDK has the Murcielago. TDKR has the Aventador.
loved the analogy at the end! perfect way to sum it up :P
song at the end of video please!!!!!!!!????? anyone?????? everyone has been asking for it
waltereyez5 fuck you
Countach > Aventador. I just love the rear of the Countach so much. That big ass wing really does look good. I believe Jay Leno took his off tho because he said he didn't like It.
Please write to the description your soundtrack. thx
that ending was perfect lolol
The exhaust on that Countach from the outside was absolutely intoxicating.
What music did you sample at the end? That shit is awesome.
The countach song is Shining Lights by Jingle Punks but not available for public =(
ua-cam.com/video/JYCqQ_p_lBc/v-deo.html
@@honestabe7099 it isn't available, so how do you know?
someone PLEASE tell me what the intro and outre music is!!
Well done man, that was a well thought out comparison. And that 80's rock killed it.
Did anyone ever find what the song is called?
+DownhillRider habanera- carmen
How was the word 'Super Car' only invented form the Countach? I believe it's more on the lines of Muira.
agree with u but actually the muira is the god mother to supercars and hypercars they all owe there thanks to the Lamborghini muira
TheSmokingTire Well, it depends where what was said.
Cheers!
What's the classical music with the cool beats called. @ 5:48
searched down... it's remix of carmen habenera now we just need to find the exact remix... :D
Nukes Away sounds like the diore remix but not quite
The diore remix sounds more like the one from this vid. They're all good. I speed them up and slow the down.
but what is the real rmx here? I've been searching and cant find it. Diore doesn't sound like this it doesn't have the same beat.
sermerlin1 I know, man!. I've been freking looking for it for 6 months and none.
Ok guys, seriously - what's the 80s-style pop song at the end of the video?
Took me years to find it...lol. Go to jinglepunks.com and search for 'Fire lights'. It's the song by imilly. You're welcome haha
Great film TST crew!
5:48 Can anyone tell me the name of that song?? And/or its remix?
DavidzToyz the name of the song is “Carmen - Habanera” lot of remixes of the song so I’m not exactly sure which one.
Where do all the rumors about Countach's being so terrible to drive come from, people that either couldn't handle a mid engine car or that wanted to daily drive them? Jay Leno seems to have the same opinion as you that they're way nicer to drive than everyone says.
One of the most famous ones which I know is the one came from captain slow! you know top gear's James May
I liked the Countach but i LOVED the Diablo...
NikKast1981 diablo is trash
diablo looks like a celebrity hair dresser
Matt congrats on buying this one of a kind beauty, I'm happy for you. I also like the music, it has that Kavinsky ("Outrun") vibe.
The 80s "Countach Theme Song" is PERFECT. Great review Farah!
Aventador sounds like a hair dryer.
Countach is still the sexiest supercar on the block.
*****
The Diablo SV and Countach 3rd gen are my favorite cars of all time.
Xeil Diablo SV is the lambos TOP i think is craziest, mad and wants you death! Is all lamborghini need to be a lambo!
Absolutelly true!!!
dude, awesome review. awesome.
Lol at the secretary.
Thank you so much smoking tire for give us the name of the song I´ll post this response here so everybody sees it :Thanks Gerardo! Glad you liked the video. That song is called "Shining Lights" but it's not avaialble to the public, it's only on a licensed music server for publishers called Jingle Punks.
I love how the video finishes with 80s music. Classic. Farrah knows how to do it correct!
4:03 hover car
