New seashell collectors watch this!

- I worry about all my little living beach critters so I finally made a video for new seashell collectors explaining that animals create the shells we pick up on the beach. It's important to check shells to make sure they are empty and I realize that people new to collecting might not know any better. I hope this video helps educate people and perhaps even save a mollusk or two.

Great video! I hope everyone listens to you and protects our wonderful sea critters.
I hope so too! 🙏🏼
Thank you for all you do❤ education is so important, so thank you for that❤
Truly my pleasure! I get so worried for these creatures - especially at low tide!
I’m definitely not a new sheller but I enjoy your videos on Sundays and I knew this would be good. I enjoyed seeing the live lightning welk under water. Have a great day everyone !
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am so glad you made this video. I’ve always been careful but I have learned so much watching you! Thank you❤
You are so welcome! I hope it helps our little critters!
Much needed info for those who are unaware how important it is to check the shells for live animals and handle them carefully when placing them back in the water. Very good informative video!! Thanks Sharmon. Can't wait for my Sunday fix of "beach time"
I hope this helps our critters. I get so worried at low tide and there isn't a resource for new shellers to find out this information. 😃
You did a wonderful job explaining this important topic so that everyone can understand! I’ve learned so much from you about these special critters at the beach!
Thank you, thank you!!
Knowledge is Power! Thank you for sharing your knowledge about these wonderful shell Critters, that live in the shells. Most people do want to know how to collect shells & be Stewart's for the living ones, they may find. It gives most people the the power to do the right thing & put them back in the water with care. It's a good feeling to save a life, no matter how little. ❤
Well said! ❤️
Yep, got to look out for them critters! Ethical collection only please. Hugs and stay safe xx
❤️
I been watching you for 3 years and I love this one. Thanks so much for doing this 💗
Love and light❤
Thank you!!!
This has bern a public knowledge notification.. you may not know til you know.....so now you do.. the creatures thank you!
I truly hope it helps a critter or two!
Well said! It is up to all of us to not only keep our beaches clean, but to respect the creatures who inhabit this environment!
Such cute critters they are! Thanks Sharmon! 😊❤
❤️
A much needed video Sharmon, thank you! So many people need to know what is collectible and what needs to stay at the beach!
Thank you so much. I hope it helps!!
Sharmon, this was a fun reminder for all shellers. You did it with great attitude and humor. Thanks!
Thank you so much! It's hard balance between sounding like a know-it-all and being educational. I just want people to leave the poor creatures at the beach 😃
@@SWFBeachLife You did a great job!
Loved this. I do love the shells , but being a marine biologist I really appreciate the ‘critters’.
I think I like the critters as much as I like the shells they make! 🥰
Yay for bonus video! Excellent and informative for those that don’t get to the beach often!
Very nicely done! I know that this issue is very important to you (me too) and I love that you made an informational video about it. Very well done with lots of examples. Bravo!
It took me quite a while to put this together so thank you so much!!
I love your channel! That adorable crab waving from the auger shell was too cute!
Thank you! 😊
What an absolutely wonderful compilation and excellent teaching video! I wish you could put it on the nightly news to reach more people! Thanks so much for putting this together..❤️👍
LOL! I wish I have this on the nightly news too!!
Made me tear up because I know how much this means to a lot of us❤🎉❤
Dear Sharmon,
Hear, hear!!🙌🏻
I'm glad you put this video on UA-cam! This is well needed. I really hope it goes viral.
Please don't be a murderer!
Lol! Yes, being a murderer is very un-cool! 😅
Good on you, my Beach Angel! You have warmed the heart of this little Lost Mermaid!! On behalf of all my sea critter friends, I thank you!
Thank you fellow animal lover! ❤️
How fun to get a bonus video this week.❤
Love the shell collecting education. Let's not forget the critters that likes to live on empty shells as well. Thanks Sharmon. 🐚
Thank you Sharmon! Nice job saving all those critters! Those critters make more critters and they all make those seashells that we all love. ❤️ So...
Be charmin'.
Listen to Sharmon!! 😁🐚🐚🐚
LOL!! ❤️❤️❤️
Marvelous video! It's great to provide information to a new sheller who goes to the beach for the first time. We always want people to enjoy themselves and take home some wonderful souvenirs - we just want to make sure they don't kill any of our valuable sea creatures.
Exactly! I think people want to do the right thing, but they need to know in the first place!
Wht a good educational information, i really appreciate it,
In here still many people purposely collect seashells with hermit crabs inside😢
Great video! I love this and how caring you are! Many more good finds. Peace and shell blessings!
I love the critters! I enjoy shelling, too, but even if I don’t go home with a single shell, seeing a healthy happy beach critter makes my day. Great video!!!
Right!? I feel the same way. Sometimes it's only wonderful memories I'm taking off the beach 😃
What a lovely and educational video, Shar. Thank you so much for creating this video. I hope whomever watches will remember this video and heed your warning/suggestion about leaving the live mollusks at the beach where they make their home. You're always looking out for your water and beach friends. I love that about you, Shar. You're always one with nature leaving it a bit better than when you got there. See you soon, my amazing beach friend. Sunday is just a few days away!! ♥🏖
We get to see some pretty awesome creatures on Sunday!!
@@SWFBeachLife I'm looking forward to that, Shar. But you ALWAYS show us some pretty amazing creatures and how you protect them. It's part of the reason I admire you so. My hubby of 25 years has no clue about shelling. I have learned SO MUCH from watching your videos. Thank you, again! ❤🏖
Shelling last month, I was shocked at how many people did not know how to tell if shell had a critter...or what to do if it did. Thanks for making this video!
New shellers likely learn the hard way - so I'm hoping to take the whole "dead critter experience" out of the equation!
SCORE! This video should be shown on the airplanes on the way to Florida! Well done!
OMG they should! Maybe I could let the county know I made this and they can use it too!
What a great informative video and happy day an extra video from you !!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I put 4 lightening Welk babys casing back in the water today at Sanibel . Found a tiny paper fig! All other regulars No lacy or Apple murex or angel wings. I was at the bridge at 7 am and it took me another hour to get to parking 😢. Stayed 3.5 hours and was happy to be there 😊
Thanks for. helping the critters! The traffic getting onto the island has been terrible. It should get better once our snowbirds return home.
Went to Keywadin today via Hemingway Ferry! What a wozer of a day!!!! Rose murex is my favorite find! Conch for days and crystal clear cool water with a breeze! Ahhh ! You are so fortunate to be so close!🤗🍀
@@heidicook4030 I am so lucky to live here!
Awesome video...very informative for those who've not collected before. And I gotta say...I love those googly eyes!
Those googly eyes are THE BEST!
Thank you Sharon truly awesome video, informative, respectful, n environmental.
This should be shown to all visitors, newcomers, n tourist....
I encountered a man who found a live shell on the beach. He got all mad and threw it out into the water. I very nicely told he shouldn’t throw them as it could harm or kill them. His reply was something to the effect that if it survived getting to the beach through all the rocks, this won’t hurt it. I told him he was wrong and he basically told me to take a hike. At least I tried!
That's all you can do! Someone got ornery with me too when I told them to not throw the animal. I feel better having an unpleasant encounter than not saying anything 😉
Great video and VERY IMORTANT!!
VERY IMPORTANT!
Glad you think so!
Great, informative video.
Thank you!
It is so interesting to see the actual critter inside the shells. Oh, and their shell casings where the baby ones are, are amazing. I never knew those existed till I saw them on your channel.
I never knew ANYTHING about the beach until I moved here. It's the best classroom ever!
What a great video! Many people do not have any idea! 💜 love this video! 👍🐚
Thank you for making this great video! I'm including it with my welcome info for people staying at our vacation rental. So many times when people check out, I find sand dollars that I can tell were alive when they took them from the beach. This breaks my heart, but people are not educated. Now, all of my guests will have a proper education of shell collecting at the beach. Thanks again!
What a fabulous idea! I should let other resorts and hotels know that there is a video out there to help educate their guests!
I love seeing the critters. I always check my shells at the beach, but one day I found a hermit crab in an auger that I brought home. Luckily we live about a mile from the beach. That little hermit crab is now living about 50 miles north of where he came from. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I watch the clock every Sunday night so I can watch the video you drop.
Bev
I also have relocated a critter or two! Sometimes they really hide in those shells. Thanks so much for watching my Sunday shell hunts!
very good 👍 well done 🐚
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
Love the fighting conchs! They’re such sassy little guys! Or/and gals! Lol
Me too! I have decided they are my favorite!
Thank you! Gad for the public service announcement on ethical shell collecting. It’s worth putting it out there!
I hope it helps a critter or two!
Love it. Way to rock!
🙏🏼
How I used to want to eat these creatures I will never know! I appreciate them so much more since seeing them in your vids!
At least you got a chance to see them now 😃
Nicely done video!
Great idea to educate everyone. It may be an idea to show those long things that look like a shedded snake skin how shell critters are forming inside those pappery looking things.
I had never seen those before until you showed us what they are. Thank for for being the carer and custodian of our mother earth and all our creatures great and small.
Oh, and please put your Etsy shop link in the description box.
Hugs from Germany 🙏💖🐚🐙🐠🐬🐚
Sorry! Someone else asked that I add the link and it's there now. I am fascinated by all the creatures I find at the beach. If I see something interesting I'll be sure to film and share!
Thanks for a very important and informative mid-week video! ❤
I remember that video that you found that giant welk love your channel I look forward to every Sunday night you post
Well said, thanks a bunch Sharmon! ❤ 🐚
Glad you made this video, obviously very necessary! I’m sure you run into many people who collect what they shouldn’t.
I get so worried at low tide when there are so many creatures around!
Awww, thank you for educating new shell collectors! This was such an important video! I'm going to look at your Etsy shop! ❤
Thank you!!
Great video!!!! "Seashell factory "😂
Hello to you from the Kentucky mermaid! I’ve missed chatting with you friend and I have so much to catch up on here on your channel. I hope to get some seashells from you someday❤
So good to hear from you! I hope you and yours are well! ❤️
From what I’ve been learning there is a shortage of shells for hermit crabs, as well. When it’s time for a larger shell they are unable to find shells so are turning to using plastic debris.
That is happening in Japan but not here in Florida! I mention that in this Sunday's video.
No it’s actually being filmed in the FL Keys.
@@lindylou3519 Where can I find info about this?
Thanks Sharmon!!
Nice video!
Thank you so much!
Great video.
Thank you so much!
Terrific video Sharmon - so important to share this info
❤ Great video! Very informative and super easy to understand.
Loved 😍 this informative, beautiful video, great job friend!😊
Thank you so much 🤗
LOVED this video;thank you!
I love it. I hope more people see this and listen to you. :)
I hope I can save a critter or two!
Excellent video because there are plenty of shells to go around
& you don't want to take them if they are alive because they stink! I learned this when I was a kid, & didn't know any better then, I learned fast after that! ;) Ty Sharmon. :)
Great informational video ! Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge with seasoned and new shellers alike. Looking forward to my Sunday evening shelling fix with you ♥️
🙏🏼
When they flip ya like that....LLLLLLLLET ME GO, LLLLLLLET ME GO, I said' LLLLLLLLLET ME GO!!!

Thank you!!! I’ve see people with BUCKETS of live sand dollars. So sad!!!
NOOOOOOOOO 🥲 It's illegal to do that here.
Great video!!
Awesome video!!
Good job!!

Love your channel and all you teach about beach life and shells. We did get to FMB last week; so sad to see the many vacant lots for sale, or with owners living in campers on them, as well as homes that are damaged beyond repair. Did not get there as early as I'd hoped (as will happen when you are going with a non-sheller, lol), but still found some lovely shells. I wondered, is the water there always the color it currently is? It looked almost brackish, and had a lot of vegetation in it. Is that typical, or residual from Ian? BTW - Acid Magic works great and I felt much easier using it over muratic acid. Thanks for the tip!
When it's rainy the fresh water from the Caloosahatchee River mixes with the salt gulf water making it a rather brownish color close to shore. When it's been very dry the water turns that gorgeous blue.
Hi, Sharmon. Is the rule to leave all living sea critters in the water true throughout the entire State of Florida? I ask because I constantly see shell collectors up here in the northern parts of Florida walking away with live shells. I hesitate to say anything because I don’t know if we have that rule up here. I know we have rules protecting the sea turtles & they are state laws. I just don’t know about the living shell rules. I enjoyed seeing you putting this information out there & I hope the shell collectors down your way will take what you have advised them to heart. “Don’t be a murderer.”!!!
Here in Lee County it is indeed illegal to remove live snails from the beach - YAY!. In some areas of Florida people are indeed allowed to take 2 living animals, per species, off the beach. It just depends on which county you live in. I am just hoping people think twice about these cute little squishy creatures before they decide to kill them for their shell.
@@SWFBeachLife Thank you, Sharmon. ♥️
❤
Great video! I've been wondering, though, how does the seafood industry in Florida affect the seashell population? Do restaurants serve the clams, oysters, scallops, etc that we see you collect every week?
I think overfishing is hurting our oceans, but I don't think the seafood industry is really harming the seashell populations. Their techniques are damaging the ocean floor though. I am not sure where the clams, oysters and scallops that we eat come from, but we mostly fish "pink gold" or shrimp down here in SWFL.
🙏🙏❤❤
Such a good vid! We check every time to make sure we’re not taking anything living away from its beach home. BUT something was deep, deep in a fighting conch we collected last year and we didn’t know it until - well, it got very stinky. Is it possible for a critter to be so far back in the shell that it can’t be seen because something was in there and I felt horrible about it.
It depends on the critter. I could see how a very dark shell with a dark critter might get missed. It happens ❤️
