It says a lot that the show manages to remain interesting with essentially a new generation of characters and a radically different structure, but there's nothing like the early seasons (I think S1 might still be my favorite, before half of each episode was spent in Wessex or Frankia)
I don't buy the fact that Norsemen gave themselves for sacrifice willingly. I've read that criminals, enemies, and people against their religion were used as sacrifices.
Actually slaves where sacrificed , but I don't know if they where brainwashed or taught that their sacrifice was good. I don't think the slaves where unwilling, but I do think they where forced to do it. Also I've heard that they used to sacrifice slaves on Chiefs funerals, and I'm pretty sure the slaves would think it was an honour to be sacrificed. But what do I know? I'm just an ordinary swede :D

Aaaactually, historically speaking there was only one well known account of a human sacrifice of one of the slave girls who willingly volunteered for her master's funeral (though the account was made by a foreigner who thought of the people as savages so who knows how much was exaggerated). Usually they mostly sacrificed horses and other livestock. Criminals were almost never killed, even for committing murder. The usual punishment was exile. Source: I very briefly studied viking history in college.
@@Hawaiian_Viking I know honouring the gods is essential in viking life but it a bit stupid to send your strongest warriors to their deaths knowing they have won you many battles in the name of your tribe.
@@neerajrana2943 Yes possibly. But it could also depend on several other factors. I'm not convinced that *blood* sacrifices can do the trick. Whilst it did allow many Victories by this practice but like I said early other factors. Firstly the side could have a tactical advantage aganist the enemy (Now I'm not a military expert) But if they were standing on top of a hill and the enemy down, then they could simply push and make their enemies fall to the ground and cause a rout. It also depends in numbers (Numbers alone don't always guarantee victory) But it does contribute if you flank your enemy and pretty much rip them apart. It also depends on the equipment and leadership. Every army needs their leader and the put their Hope's on. So charismatic leaders were a major contributor in guaranteeing victory. Look at Julius Caesar. In the battle of Alesia he ordered the Cavalry to follow him and clash with the Gualic tribesmen. The legionnaires could inspired and fought on and drove of the Guals from the defences.

Tr to imagine how strange it felt when they went to uppsala, when i have been there many times and could be there in 1h. There are alot of viking runestones were i live and a grave to. In uppsala there are a large Hills that were made as graves for viking kings etc.
I laughted real hard when they traveled to Uppsala. In one scene they are walking up the side of a fjord in Norway (also note that they are supposed to be in Denmark), and in the next scene they've went all the way from the made up fjord in Denmark, across Kattegatt and all the way to Uppsala.
This is so eerie and the singing is beautiful, religion is such an interesting aspect and so on. So eerie, and beautiful somewhat. It shows these men and woman are dedicated to their gods, but it's still frightening. I'd want a quick death, feeling a blade of metal on my throat would make me frightened crapless.
Incredibly brave man volunteers to be sacrificed when no one else would...then is left to hang upside from tree in middle of nowhere. This scene will stay with me forever and make me think twice about ever "sacrificing" myself in any respect, given the lack of gratitude I will likely recieve from my fellow humans.
C Pegg Yup, according to Ansgar of Hamburg-Bremen's account of the Uppsala temple, sacrifices were hanged in honour of Odin, who hung himself with his spear on Yggdrassil to find the runes.

Ynglingesaga tells of a king who sacrificed his sons and of a congregation of chieftains who scrificed their king. Most of the sacrifices were probably slaves stolen from Ireland.
It came a bit as a surpise to me that Vikings had human sacrifices. I did some basic research and it seems that they had two types of human sacrifices, for the gods in religious ceremonies and during the funerals. According to the german historian Adam of Bremen swedish kings sacrificed males every ninth year during the Yule sacrifices at the Temple at Uppsala. It doesnt's say how many though. The hanging from a tree probably has to do with myth about Odin's death who died hanged on the world tree Yggdrasil. I would like to know more about this subject so feel free to add details and informations.
+Freyja Lover Not sure where you're from exactly, but the archaeological findings in Denmark and Sweden have extensive proof of this happening. It's true that people later have called Adam of Bremen's statements christian propaganda, but he's not the only one to have seemingly witnessed the northmens rituals of human sacrifice. You should take a trip to the National Museum of history in Denmark. It's a very informative and interesting visit :)
***** You can continue to ignore solid evidence but the fact is that findings in Trelleborg, Kongsgården and swamps from Sigersdal in Denmark have confirmed this - newly findings have been made in Sweden as well. And the arabic kalif Ahmad Ibn Fadlan also have a detailed narration of the northman doing so - he was definitely not christian. Your statement on beautiful blonde seeresses who are about chastity and purity on the other hand, could just as well be wrong interpretation.
***** If you know of his works, you would know that he never demonized the northmen. He was a writer and a traveler and he also complimented the vikings. Even without this being concrete evidence, the findings of both animals, adults and children being sacrificed at rituals for Odin is still fact.
Even as a willing sacrifice, Valhalla is not their final resting place. For those of you saying as such, Valhalla is only reserved for those Odin calls forth whom die in battle and that is half. The other half go to Frejya in Folkvangr whom she chooses. Anyone else goes to Hel in the underworld, for those who didn’t die in battle but were led a well crafted life will remain in a section of the underworld called Helgafjell, the holy mountain. The shit heads get to hang out on the other side with Hel and continue their meaningless deathly existence.
this is pure bullshit, viking sacrifice were almost never volounteers but instead prisoners or slaves, warriors and nobles would always choose to die in battle rather than by being slaughtered in this way...the battle's death was the only one that would allow you to enter the valhalla
acualy this is very authentic to be chosen to be sacrificed to the gods was seen as a great honor the only way you dont go to valhalla is if you die of sickness old age or murder only a honorable death will allow you into valhalla and death in battle was seen as the highest honor some of these viewsof death are shared by my ancestors the ancient scots as well
That is not quite right. Only the BEST warriors would get to go to Valhalla. For Ragnarok, only the absolute best warriors were deemed worthy enough by Odin to serve him in his final battle.

It says a lot that the show manages to remain interesting with essentially a new generation of characters and a radically different structure, but there's nothing like the early seasons (I think S1 might still be my favorite, before half of each episode was spent in Wessex or Frankia)
One of the best episodes of the show..
They dead wrong for trying to sacrifice Athelstan without telling him. This was the one time Ragnar actually pissed me off.
So beautifully and dramatically shot!
I don't buy the fact that Norsemen gave themselves for sacrifice willingly. I've read that criminals, enemies, and people against their religion were used as sacrifices.
***** Sure bud,
www.medievalists.net/2014/07/06/viking-human-sacrifices-hollywood-vs-reality/
Actually slaves where sacrificed , but I don't know if they where brainwashed or taught that their sacrifice was good. I don't think the slaves where unwilling, but I do think they where forced to do it. Also I've heard that they used to sacrifice slaves on Chiefs funerals, and I'm pretty sure the slaves would think it was an honour to be sacrificed. But what do I know? I'm just an ordinary swede :D
+Magnus Eide I'm not the one having a sword fight. You clearly stated to site sources, and I did. Now you want something peer reviewed? You're reaching too far for hollywood. Just go research "Gamla Uppsala", or Norse sacrifices. If not, then continue fantasizing about hollywood ideals.
***** What?? The topic was about Norseman giving themselves up for sacrifice. Stick to the topic please.
The first crew was so badass... Leif Torstein Rollo Ragnar Floki and Olaf. Man this show was amazing for the first couple seasons.
Vikings before:
Vikings now: PEWDIEPIE
Bullshit😠😡
Vikings: "All-Father! Grant us victory in this upcoming battle!"
Odin: "Sure, send me your healthiest, strongest, fastest warriors"
Pretty dumb huh?
@@phillip_iv_planetking6354 you're fucking dumb. Disrespect your own fuckin God, you trash
@@Hawaiian_Viking I know honouring the gods is essential in viking life but it a bit stupid to send your strongest warriors to their deaths knowing they have won you many battles in the name of your tribe.
@@tvnetworks6610 still they won many battles. A sign that even without our greatest warriors allfather is with us.
A very beautiul and powerful scene

Song is called Sacrifice by Sharon Lyons.
Uma das melhores cenas da série, se não a melhor!
One HUGE ERROR THOUGH!!... Uppsala Temple could not have been in a forrest hugh up a mountain!.. Uppsala in Sweden is flat land.. Not a single mountain nearby.. :)
AMAZING SCENE! :D
I feel honored to be scandinavian!..
Learn your geography! There is a thick forest right outside of Uppsala (Uppsala County) that could have easily been the scene of these sacred rites.

in old uppsala there is a forest close to the old graves. also the forest might have been bigger 1000 years ago :)
As someone living in Uppsala I can confirm that there are forests around here, and who knows what it looked like over 1000 years ago. No mountains here, though
rymdalkis in Gamla Uppsala, the Hill in råby rundan might have been bigger back in the days
There are even more places with the name Uppsala in Västergötland than anywhere else in Sweden.

I get goosebumps every time i watch this scene. Without a doubt the best show on TV.
For the people who are searching for this song, look for Sharon Lyons - Sacrifice (it is on Spotify too)!
Tr to imagine how strange it felt when they went to uppsala, when i have been there many times and could be there in 1h. There are alot of viking runestones were i live and a grave to. In uppsala there are a large Hills that were made as graves for viking kings etc.
watching this sharp blade cutting through the throat like a knife through butter, whoa.
This is the scene that sold the series for me and got me hooked.
That guy that volunteered was badass, sad and stupid way for him to go :(
No, but it was sad and stupid that he didn't die on the battlefield, but instead was killed because of a stupid tradition/ custom.
***** Whatever they believed back then, you and I both know that in reality they were just wasting good warriors and livestock.
How so? Would you mind explaining to me how those sacrifices benefited everyone who was involved.
Toxic masculinity some would say .
I've never seen a death scene that's so...beautiful
this scene is so strong and hypnotic
Scene like an extraordinary shiver!!
...and that Sword specially caught my attention while I was watching.
the great "Falcata" sword 🗡️
For as good as this scene is, the scene right before it is as powerful.
the scene that i love most in first season .! amazing voice and ceremony..
I laughted real hard when they traveled to Uppsala. In one scene they are walking up the side of a fjord in Norway (also note that they are supposed to be in Denmark), and in the next scene they've went all the way from the made up fjord in Denmark, across Kattegatt and all the way to Uppsala.
In the series Kattegat is in Norway..... somehow
Sweden doesn't exist in the series I guess, of course it wouldn't be the Sweden we know today but still.
I'm going to study in Uppsala after I graduate. Feels kinda cool to be in the same place that vikings/northmen used to perform rituals and stuff
There is power in blood. That is all the explanation you need know.
BEAUTIFUL Voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Perfect with the Series!!!
Clearly the best scene ❤
Incredibly brave man volunteers to be sacrificed when no one else would...then is left to hang upside from tree in middle of nowhere. This scene will stay with me forever and make me think twice about ever "sacrificing" myself in any respect, given the lack of gratitude I will likely recieve from my fellow humans.
The bodies were likely left to hang possibly as offerings of flesh, but I am only guessing.
C Pegg Yup, according to Ansgar of Hamburg-Bremen's account of the Uppsala temple, sacrifices were hanged in honour of Odin, who hung himself with his spear on Yggdrassil to find the runes.
Though keep in mind Ansgar had never actually been to the temple of Uppsala.
*****
The Death of Jesus has no relation to the ceremony of sacrifice depicted in this video, so why bother even bringing it up?
***** There is only One God.
I am geting goosebumps of this song
We have modern day human sacrices too. We just embellish it with patrotism and frame it with a good vs evil narrative...But the idea is the same.
Shut up
For being the rulers of the world, the Jews sure suck at protecting themselves from hate crimes. It's almost as if that's just a conspiracy theory told to legitimize violence against them
El Cid Campeador Oh yeah. I've read some of those theories. They're bullshit. Jews are on average better off because unlike you, they don't sit on their computer all day and write conspiracy theories. They study and get good jobs
Yeah we do. With abortions
People have nothing better to do than attribute any fucking scene they watch with wars/patriotism. Nobody is going to end war, nobody is going to end what goes on. May as well shut your mouth about it, you do no good for anyone. Are you telling me ISIS for example isn't literally evil? They are the scourge of the Earth and should be eradicated.
Ya know leaf was one of the best characters and should have been kept on the show. Total vikings warrior
I wish I could go back in time and be a Viking!

To Vorjay, The curved blade predates even the Greeks and one of the earliest kind can be found in ancient Egypt and its unlikely that Alexander the Great/Marco Polo brought this design to Asia as many claim. As early weapons often came from agricultural/hunting tools a sythe like shape of the Kukri really can't be claimed by any single culture.

Vikings sacrificed only in battle, and it was berserkers. Berserkers consuming a hallucinogenic drink and fell into a berserk. do not feel pain and they went first in the wall.
Hello the Vikings did do sacrifice at Uppsala every 9 years they sacrificed animals and men 9 of each
Great movie ! Greetings from Bulgaria ..
krasi krasi merry Christmas x
Song, PLEASE?! :)))
i just rewatched this episode the other day completely shit faced and cryed my ass off man.
Now i know this is a show but, im almost 100% positive they never sacrificed their own, ive read they took prisoners from their battles and sacrificed them so that Oden would allow them to win their next battles. Regardless id rather prefer the dudes that did sparticus to make a viking show about Harold Hardrada that be fucking kickass. And the very last episode will be of him charging down the hill and a first person perspective of an arrow sticking from the front of his neck as he bleeds out. Shit would be fucking dank
Ynglingesaga tells of a king who sacrificed his sons and of a congregation of chieftains who scrificed their king. Most of the sacrifices were probably slaves stolen from Ireland.
Just wow...
I am grateful of not being a pagan. As a matter of fact, ritual human sacrificing is an act of murder.
***** you are just denying stuff. You know little of your pagan people's history.
Soundtrack: "sacrifice cosmin horatiu"
Strong and powerfull scene! Life from death, death from life. That is the power of the old gods: courage to live, courage to die, that's all!
Some people today would call this toxic Masculinity .
Some people today would call this toxic Masculinity .
this is pure bullshit, viking sacrifice were almost never volounteers but instead prisoners or slaves, warriors and nobles would always choose to die in battle rather than by being slaughtered in this way...the battle's death was the only one that would allow you to enter the valhalla
Hieros_Gamos the gods only want sacrifices from those whose faith is unchallenged.
acualy this is very authentic to be chosen to be sacrificed to the gods was seen as a great honor the only way you dont go to valhalla is if you die of sickness old age or murder only a honorable death will allow you into valhalla and death in battle was seen as the highest honor some of these viewsof death are shared by my ancestors the ancient scots as well
That is not quite right. Only the BEST warriors would get to go to Valhalla. For Ragnarok, only the absolute best warriors were deemed worthy enough by Odin to serve him in his final battle.
He accepted this "honour" for 2 reasons.
1. There was a promise you will enter Valhalla as really one of the bravest, even higher than die in battle. To sacrifice direct to Odin every 9th year was only the elits of that village. Acc to some sources (its still debatable).
2. He was not selfish, his death will give crops to the village, food, life. Odin demand blood and return they get life.
And it was the king who performed this ritual. So it was very important moment.
É de arrepiar
I remembered this essence when I was smoking some shit and I had a trip that it feel me like a real viking.
