      He accepted this "honour" for 2 reasons.
      1. There was a promise you will enter Valhalla as really one of the bravest, even higher than die in battle. To sacrifice direct to Odin every 9th year was only the elits of that village. Acc to some sources (its still debatable)
      2. He was not selfish, his death will give crops to the village. Odin demand blood and return they get life.
      And it was the king who performed this ritual. So it was very important moment.

      Your comment was interesting, so I looked it up and found some information. If anyone else wants to read:
      "Many legends exist about the origin of the Christmas tree. The
      organizer of Christian church in France and Germany, Saint Boniface,
      the English monk was the protagonist in one of these stories. Once upon a
      time when he was traveling, he came across a group of pagans who had
      congregated around an oak tree. He saw that these pagans were about to
      offer a sacrifice of human child to the God Thor. He eagerly wanted to
      stop them from taking the little fellow’s life. He decided to hit and
      break the tree with one mighty blow of his fist. A small fir tree was
      grown in place of the oak tree. According to Boniface the tree stood
      the eternal life of Christ. He told the pagan worshippers that the
      little fir tree symbolizes life."

  • @AlcoholRabbit
    @AlcoholRabbit 10 років тому +191

    Such a hauntingly good scene and the music caps it off perfectly. However in the comments I notice a few people wondering WHY they sacrificed strong and healthy warriors as opposed to slaves and captured enemy. It was done to best please the God Odin in order to be in his good graces and continue to be blessed in life and battle.
    Those sacrificing themselves aren't doing it just to go to Valhalla, they are doing it with the belief of benefitting their people by offering themselves, healthy and strong to best please Odin. While they did sacrifice other slaves and enemies at different times...this sacrifice (The journey to Upsalla at the temple) is a SPECIAL sacrifice. It's the most important, thus they give their best in this 'blot' (Sacrifice).
    Crazy, I know but I respect them for being so brave in their belief.

      have to be a very special sacrifice then (as in, once in every thousand years sacrifice), since i own several books on vikings and no one of them mentions sacrifices of their own warriors like this, slaves and captives, yes, but no volunteers.

    • @AlcoholRabbit
      @AlcoholRabbit 10 років тому +16

      There are varying accounts on how the Vikings lived and I certainly haven't studied or researched them to the point where I can quote what I said as solid fact. Not everyone is on the same page it seems when it comes to how they did things, for example, Viking Funerals generally talk about the body being burnt on the ship set out in water but some other accounts would suggest that the body was burnt on the boat while it was on land.
      While I don't doubt your books at all, it seems as if the only place I see them sacrificing themselves for the betterment of their people is at the temple in Upsalla. Look into the Midvinterblot as a more famous example of them sacrificing their own.
      I wish we could meet, drink beer and talk while I go through your books. Stuff like this interests me greatly.

      InDeed. I would like to point out that folks often overlook the fact that there were Various Norse Tribes in various lands; as such: it Would make sense that Customs while similar, would Vary from region to region. Despite the fact that The Temple at Upsalla was one of The Holiest places for Vikings; we also had THORR's/DONNAR's Oak(Before it was chopped down) and many other sacred sites.

      Borin81 A volunteer is not that unlikely, but then it would be older people, or someone with nothing to lose. A sort of assisted suicide. The norse it seems were far too practical to sacrifice strong warriors in their prime, when there was other solutions.

    They believed that for a human sacrifice to matter the person had to matter in life.

      Good for you man, everybody has a favorite show, Game of thrones and Spartacus are epic in their own way though, is not a question that they are less awesome then Vikings but cause this series depicts with detail and realism pagan believes and tradicions and a true Viking saga in conquering and raiding, i see this series more of a documentary then a fictional characterization of Ragnar´s life, but Spartacus is1 of my favorites, even though the battles are less realistic then Vikings, they´re made to be more graphic and i loved the concept and the gladiator description was awesome too, since the first episode i saw that Vikings is one of the greatest series of all times no need for a retualistic sacrifice. but everybody gets a hard on with diferent things i guess.

    This scene and its song entranced me and crystallized this memory of this show into my mind. The music and the raw, butterflys in the stomach feeling of submitting oneself to the end through this macabre ceremony. Also the earthly nature of the symbols and statues brings the feeling that in this time these invisible gods lived underneath the veil of reality that was in all the dirt, branches, stones and animals.

      El Cid Campeador dude the bible and the abrahamic religions are bullshit.
      The God of Judaism, Chrustisnity and Islam are origionally the supreme God of the Cananites, which was called "El" (god in hebrew),
      he was the creator of the world and the father of the other canaanite gods. in some point some canaanite tribes decided to worship him only, without the "minor gods" probably due influence of the Athenan-monotheist revolution in Egypt in that time.
      many stories snd elements in the bible are very similar to the Canaanite mythology (that was much older). hebrew is a dialect of the canaanite language. the Abrahamic religions are all origionally from the canaanite religion, your god is nothing but a canaanite god.

Usually they mostly sacrificed horses and other livestock. Criminals were almost never killed, even for committing murder. The usual punishment was exile.

      @@neerajrana2943 Yes possibly. But it could also depend on several other factors. I'm not convinced that *blood* sacrifices can do the trick. Whilst it did allow many Victories by this practice but like I said early other factors.
      Firstly the side could have a tactical advantage aganist the enemy (Now I'm not a military expert) But if they were standing on top of a hill and the enemy down, then they could simply push and make their enemies fall to the ground and cause a rout.
      It also depends in numbers (Numbers alone don't always guarantee victory) But it does contribute if you flank your enemy and pretty much rip them apart.
      It also depends on the equipment and leadership. Every army needs their leader and the put their Hope's on. So charismatic leaders were a major contributor in guaranteeing victory. Look at Julius Caesar. In the battle of Alesia he ordered the Cavalry to follow him and clash with the Gualic tribesmen. The legionnaires could inspired and fought on and drove of the Guals from the defences.

    It came a bit as a surpise to me that Vikings had human sacrifices. I did some basic research and it seems that they had two types of human sacrifices, for the gods in religious ceremonies and during the funerals. According to the german historian Adam of Bremen swedish kings sacrificed males every ninth year during the Yule sacrifices at the Temple at Uppsala. It doesnt's say how many though. The hanging from a tree probably has to do with myth about Odin's death who died hanged on the world tree Yggdrasil. I would like to know more about this subject so feel free to add details and informations.

      +Freyja Lover Not sure where you're from exactly, but the archaeological findings in Denmark and Sweden have extensive proof of this happening. It's true that people later have called Adam of Bremen's statements christian propaganda, but he's not the only one to have seemingly witnessed the northmens rituals of human sacrifice. You should take a trip to the National Museum of history in Denmark. It's a very informative and interesting visit :)

      ***** You can continue to ignore solid evidence but the fact is that findings in Trelleborg, Kongsgården and swamps from Sigersdal in Denmark have confirmed this - newly findings have been made in Sweden as well. And the arabic kalif Ahmad Ibn Fadlan also have a detailed narration of the northman doing so - he was definitely not christian. Your statement on beautiful blonde seeresses who are about chastity and purity on the other hand, could just as well be wrong interpretation.

      ***** If you know of his works, you would know that he never demonized the northmen. He was a writer and a traveler and he also complimented the vikings. Even as a willing sacrifice, Valhalla is not their final resting place. For those of you saying as such, Valhalla is only reserved for those Odin calls forth whom die in battle and that is half. The other half go to Frejya in Folkvangr whom she chooses. Anyone else goes to Hel in the underworld, for those who didn’t die in battle but were led a well crafted life will remain in a section of the underworld called Helgafjell, the holy mountain. The shit heads get to hang out on the other side with Hel and continue their meaningless deathly existence.

  • @David31567
    @David31567 Місяць тому

    He accepted this "honour" for 2 reasons.
    1. There was a promise you will enter Valhalla as really one of the bravest, even higher than die in battle. To sacrifice direct to Odin every 9th year was only the elits of that village. Acc to some sources (its still debatable).
    2. He was not selfish, his death will give crops to the village, food, life. Odin demand blood and return they get life.
    And it was the king who performed this ritual. So it was very important moment.

In another 1000 years another civilization will be surprised with our stupidity when they will discover that we have almost stopped our technology development because of some fairytale about global warming. Or about us having an animal pets, instead of eating them all.
