Hey Bob. Great video as always. Just one thing when running RGBS with a direct connection from Mister FPGA to the D-sub connector on the input card the jumper on VGA PWR on the Mister FPGA should be set to not send voltage. I don't know about RGBHV but with RGBS you don't want to send 3.3v or 5v. It might damage the input card in the long run. That's information I got from Will himself from Retro Upgrades.
This shouldn't relate to the latest versions where pin 9 should be disconnected. As far as I know, at least Castlemanias batch should be fixed. It is of course sound advice in any case, just to be sure :)
Our current batch (only a few remaining) will ship with pin 9 "manually" disconnected. For any future batches, we'll use Martin's latest design which has pin 9 already disconnected on the board design.
I am excited to get one of these for my L2 just to have another input so I don't have to change the wires every time I want to swap from my MiSTer to the PS2 or anything else
This is badass, but such a shame I can’t have 2 input boards. If I didn’t already have a 129x for easy Component/Scart swapping this would be an immediate buy from me. I might get a hold of one anyways just in case, you never know.

Man, I'm having so much trouble getting this to work at all on my 20L5 :( it sees the card and reports the model correctly (no serial number?) but no video, no matter how much I fiddle with the switches on the card and RGB/COMP and EXT Sync options.
Pretty cool. Are there alot of these pvm's to have hole card like this custom? I haven't even got a chance in getting a pvm. Id of course look for the full package with it restored and cleaned. I don't have no space.
No, because most other model PVM’s have input cards that are cheap and available. Maybe someday, someone will fork Martin’s project and make these cards for other monitors though!
i run into an issue if i use y cables to say, add audio from two sources sometimes where one console may not push audio through it at all if another consoles is plugged in but in most console combos it tends to work that way.
damn I was really hoping you'd be able to switch between the two inputs with "option a" and "option b", i'd always assumed option B would be for a second card slot, but i guess not?? who knew. I actually have an original BKM-129X, i tracked it down shortly after i bought my 20L5, but that was like 6-7 yrs ago now. I'm guessing the originals are hard to come by now, thus all these clone cards... Not sure this buys me much beyond my existing setup, I have a separate sync-combiner and an SCART->BNC cable with audio breakouts, although having a proper SCART with the audio out jack is kind of nice I suppose. Although with my separate sync combiner, i can plug a sync-combined VGA source onto my SCART switcher and auto-switch, seems like with this setup you'd be manually hitting that switch to go between inputs. Not horrible, but not perfect. Hmm I'm still tempted for some reason though....
Hope it's possible to get a JP-21 version of this, but if not I guess I can get or make a converter cable. Also, I'm guessing the L5 PVMs will still unfortunately force the picture to letterbox for 720p/1080i, so it won't quite be as good as a VGA monitor in that regard
The L5 can accept a 4:3 480p signal, as well as 16:9 signals from 480p, 720p and 1080i. So, depending on your use this, you might call this better than a VGA monitor. Also, I'd recommend using a JP21 converter cable. The project is open source, so you could always re-built the board if you'd like.
@@RetroRGB Well, I can adjust my VGA monitor to 16:9 if I want, but at least it doesn't force it like the PVM does for systems like the AVS, but I have a real Famicom for the PVM so it's no big deal. So if I wanted to make my own JP-21 version of the 129x Dual input card, would I just send the gbr files to a PCB maker, then solder in the parts myself? Never done something like that, but I think I can handle it.
You might not, actually. The scanlines are a lot thinner on the 20L5, kinda like a big PC CRT monitor, because they were designed primarily for 480p, 720p, and 1080i. So while it's nice to have for 480p consoles like the Wii, I think a lower-res PVM, like a 20L2 or 20M2, are much better for 240p.

For sure. I have a couple pc crts and a scalar to act as the poor man’s bvm. But I haven’t found one with the contrast and colors to leave me all the way satisfied with high res stuff
@@dylanjastle Make no mistake - 240p on a 20L5 is excellent. I'm not sure why the other user would state otherwise. The primary talk regarding the 20L5 comes from 480i with spacing between fields. Thinner scanlines (higher line count) honestly comes down to preference, and most folks seem to prefer 600 lines as opposed to the 20L5's 800, which is totally fair. Some folks think 800-1000 (BVM range) is too sharp, others think 600 is not sharp enough. It's all preference in the end. It is theorized the reason for 480i field spacing is its multiformat capability, but I don't think anyone has *technically* proven that. 240p is just fine.
I picked up two of these from Retro Upgrades in the UK.. just a warning HVSYNC does not fully work on these cards, they cause distortion and waves in the top of the image. The CSYNC input for VGA does work if you can send that type of signal to begin with. But I bought this to hopefully just take a VGA output from a PC and it's not usable.

I am not sure if that matters or not and maybe that's what you meant by it only mattering for an oscilloscope. The good ones you link are 75 Ohm I think.
The Dual has two inputs, with a different circuit on it, manufactured during a global part shortage. That’s not a “markup”, that’s the proper cost of the more advanced model.
Do these work for D-Series BVMs? Also, are there similar homebrew input cards for Composite and S-Video (both PAL and NTSC)? And lastly, what is the maximum resolution and refresh rate supported by the D32E1WU in both HD-SDI and VGA? And does the A32E1WU and D32E1WU perform similarly? Does it support PS3 at 1080p 24Hz?

Don't PVMs have Option A/Option B buttons to select between inputs on an input card? Is there a reason why a switch on the card itself was used instead of that?
Good question: Adding that option to this card would require an FPGA to communicate with the monitor's controls...and that would add a LOT more work and cost to the project. Doubling the price of the card, just to enable the front "Option B", instead of the rear button doesn't seem worth the effort...and you'd still need to toggle the sync combiner in back anyway. Would I be able to use this on a 14L2? I'm thinking of using this card to turn my pvm into a monitor via the VGA port for my desktop pc while I'm not using it for retro gaming. Is this something I can do? What problems might I expect?
No. And yes. So, this WILL work in your L2, however that's a 15KHz only monitor, so you can only use 240p or 480i resolutions. Even though the dsub port looks like VGA, it's up to the monitor to decide if it works...and only the L5 can accept 480p.
PAL is a color encoding scheme used with composite video and S-Video. The BKM-129X is a RGB/YPbPr card, and all the monitors that support the card should be able to do 50Hz RGB/YPbPr signals.
Nope, unfortunately not. There is no information sent from the monitor about this (as the BKM-129X is inherently "single channel"). Thus switching between VGA and SCART is done manually.
It should (the original card was made for L2's originally) but you'd only be able to use 15kHz signals, so the VGA port will only be for ease of connectivity (like for MiSTer).
Ugh, I wouldn't even show people how to hook up audio to the PVM. It's a travesty to put that much work into getting flawless video only to go with the crappiest possible audio
I think context is important. I use my L5's speakers every single time I connect a console...BUT...it's usually one of two things: - Testing a console for a video/review and I just need sound to know it's working. - Setting up for a stream/gaming session. This lets me get everything set up, then either switch to headphones, or my stereo for actual gaming. ...and one last scenario: Some games just have crappy audio. I'd never bother setting up my Atari 2600 through a stereo, or a few random other consoles/games. There's just no point, plus the TV's those games were designed to be played on had worse speakers than the PVM. So, while I understand your point, I'll never exclude some tips, just because everyone won't agree. There's always a use case scenario that works.
@@RetroRGB Yeah, I use the speaker when I play NES. It only outputs mono anyway and sometimes it just seems more nostalgic for whatever reason to hear those old games through a little speaker like that.

It should (the original card was made for L2's originally) but you'd only be able to use 15kHz signals, so the VGA port will only be for ease of connectivity (like for MiSTer).
Hello does this work for Sony Trinitron PVM-20L2MD ? it appears to have a removable input board for this
It should. But the L2's don't support 480p, so you'd mostly be using it with the SCART input.
Awe I thought the L5 had two inputs.
Lol, me too! I was bummed when I opened the back panel and saw only one slot.
@@RetroRGB it’s so great to be an L5 owner. It keeps giving back.
cool
so you are saying now is a good time to get a relatively cheaper A series bvm before the next card causes the price on them to go up?
Ugh, I wouldn't even show people how to hook up audio to the PVM. It's a travesty to put that much work into getting flawless video only to go with the crappiest possible audio
I think context is important. I use my L5's speakers every single time I connect a console...BUT...it's usually one of two things:
- Testing a console for a video/review and I just need sound to know it's working.
Please stop putting apostrophes in plurals.
