The makeout session on stage while the director deadpans “they certainly don’t need practice with that.” The whole rehearsal was beautiful, they have great chemistry.
Love it that 75 year-old Antoinette Sibley gives Hamilton a correction in 4:28 and looks more sensual than the young dancer who is probably 50 years younger. Teachers are incredible to watch.
I can't believe I am watching Sibley and Dowell coach. I have loved them for 60 years. Melissa is doing a wonderful job. The man too. I'm so glad this is on film. Thank you for this enormous treat. MacMillan is unbelievable.
Matthew Golding didn't want that kiss to end! I wouldn't have wanted it to end, if someone was kissing me like that. This is one of the most beautiful pas de deux ever...the music is so passionate, but with a definite undercurrent of sadness that foreshadows the tragedy ahead.
I just can't watch this clip without blushing with the dancers and coaches. At the same time, it is absolutely the most beautiful pas de deux of all, matched of course by the final pdd from this same ballet. MacMillan simply choreographed passion effortlessly.
This is an immense privilege and joy for me to see this beautiful rehearsal of two superb young dancers being rehearsed by Anthony Dowell and Antoinette Sibley . I was in Theatrical Digs with both of them in the summer of 1962 when Anthony must have been 19yrs he always came down to breakfast in a beautiful dressing gown , was charming and witty good company . We didn't see much of Antoinette who spent most nights away with her boyfriend , we understood to be a handsome young airline pilot . I am thrilled to see them again , alive and well , rehearsing young dancers . I have a recording of Anthony Dowell dancing this pas de deux with Jenifer Penney so beautifully , I believe unmatched by any other dancers , Anthony danced with such freshness of youth and passion , a fluid rhythm that completely expressed the mood .
If you havent seen the video of federico/marianela doing this scene on stage, go watch it! Theyre both stunning! I prefer them to other videos ive seen of different pairings, maybe bcuz its after rehearsals and polishing and whatnot (just my personal preference too). Both wonderful actors for their characters :) Macmillan is a true genius!
I always think the Character of Manon is so moving as she goes through during the ballet many differing moments and her personality alters as she gains confidence She is flattered by the attention she gets- but dosent realize she is being used for their pleasure But like a lot of the opera heroines it all ends in tears
There's just something about MacMillan's choreography that compels one to dance full out. You can see the dancers just being swept along by the music, and the choreography. Beautiful.
So true. To me it really became obvious when I watched other choreographies of the balcony Pas de deux in Romeo and Juliet, I just can't enjoy them as much as I do the Macmillan version. He just melted together the music with the steps.
Nasduchamp I’m right with you. Versions of the balcony scene by other choreographers seem almost static in comparison. John Cranko’s choreography is a distant second to MacMillan’s in my estimation, and Lavrovsky’s version for the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky is downright turgid, with pages and pages of sweeping musical score being ripped away as the duet lurches along from one pedestrian pose to another. I really don’t care for the Russian Romeo and Juliet. But I digress.
Wow it's so interesting how different this is from the Yanowsky/Bolle pairing, and even the Yanowsky/Golding one, but it also works beautifully. How wonderful that each new permutation of dancers can make something so independently precious, unique, each time. What a delight ballet is. And of course what a genius MacMillan was.
I love the two choreographers, they are just sweet! The kissing was fire and the way the choreographers looked on was funny! The male dancer is Brad Pitt all over and the ballerina is so pretty! I love this rehearsal! ❤
They're so good it makes me jealous :v Also, this coreography is just so unique... So much passion, so much feeling it just pours out of every move. Fascinating!
I adore this rehearsal with Anthony Dowell and Antoinette Sibley now both elderly , coaching young Melissa Hamilton and Mathew Golding who are dancing beautifully .
Absolutely stunning - what a beautiful example of two generations of incredible dancers! I loved Dowell's comment about the plié having gone out of fashion. I think if it makes a comeback, we'll have a lot less injured dancers. Regardless, thank you for posting this inspiring video!!!
I saw Anthony and Antoinette dance this in the Kennedy Center premiere of "Manon," in 1974, when I was 13. I probably began ballet classes the next week. It is my favorite ballet, by my favorite choreographer, Kenneth MacMillan. Anthony became my role model, when I was a ballet dancer, though I never quite became professional. Mom loved him, too, very much. Together, we went to many performances of his. Once, we even flew down to West Palm Beach in Florida to see him and Antoinette, whom he had coaxed out of retirement, for a gala. I stopped dancing when Kenneth died of a sudden heart attack, while backstage, reviving, "Mayerling," in Covent Garden, in late 1992. I stopped smoking cigarettes, then, too. Ironically, "Mayerling" premiered in early 1978, the year I later turned 17, just as a man named Gary Phillips was finishing molesting me, when I ran away from my abusive father. "Mayerling" is based on the true story of Crown Prince Rudolf, who killed his 17-year-old "mistress," Mary Vetsera, before killing himself, outside Vienna, Austria, where my father's side of the family happened to be from.
I think you are absolutely correct. Just once in a while you see someone who has that very special combination you mention and who really transforms a given role.
artificialglory It's taken from Massenet's opera 'Cendrillon'. You can find out more about the pas de deux at www.roh.org.uk/news/manon-dance-highlights-four-extended-pas-de-deux
I once saw a video where the male dancer sort of dropped the ballerina down bang, bang. She was a game one, though.....she popped right up and finished the pas de deux.

How lucky they are to have the original cast giving their input to a new generation!!! Such an unique oportunity! Wonderful!!!
Love it that 75 year-old Antoinette Sibley gives Hamilton a correction in 4:28 and looks more sensual than the young dancer who is probably 50 years younger. Teachers are incredible to watch.
I love the expressions of the two coaches in the back. He's all "Okay. Okay, kids, come on..." and she's all "Oh, I remember those days!"

You should watch Marianela Nunez version and see how this is really supposed to be done. Exquisite. totally McMillan.
I saw it, they were marvelous!
That kiss O M G
I'm so glad the Royal Ballet has put these on You tube. What a treasure for the dancers and audience alike! wonderful dancing.
A true gift for having both Sibley and Dowell as coaches. They too were impeccable dancers
Melissa Hamilton is definitely underappreciated! I hope she is promoted to principal soon
The kiss omg and Anthony's face at 10:06 lol
The whole thing is so passionate and full of emotions. I don't even know what to say anymore. Beautiful!
Ars Choi That's realy realy beautiful don't ya? #amazingDance
Lmao i- yes, Anthonys face was priceless
Perhaps it was a recall of how passionately he kissed Jenifer Penney when they danced that Pas de Deux , more so than this !
I loved how they were like "what do you think I did?" and "I mirrored you"...

haha if they aren't they will be. they just about burned a hole in my screen!
Real enough to make Sir Anthony blush haha.
whamwham100 theyre not together no :)
dancers have to act as well...
Dancers today seem so much more athletic and flexible than decades ago. So beautiful to watch this.
They actually made a video talking about how ballet has changed. They are on point much more now than they were when ballet was first made
I find dancers these days a little bit too 'fast'... sometimes.
