- We all know this supermarket basil in pots, it looks so heathy and a few days later it will die...I call this the "Basil Trauma", learn in this video how to save your basil plant & multiply it! 💚 #basil #gardening #lifehacks #howto
THIS is why my basil never survives 😭 this is an amazing video. Thank you
Welcome!
It dies cause its an type of basil that is not sustaining itself, it on purpose not regrow good. Grow basil from normal seeds. Then the basil form flowers that produce more seeds and spread in the sourounding. Also the usual type of basil grow much higher. It will grow more basil than you can use basil spread sool fast. Of course they not sell this in the plant pots in super market cause customers will rebuy less.
@@haralds4145don't be stupid bruh the video already explained to you
I live in a Mediterranean climate and basil grows like crazy ( as do tomato's ) and you don't have to do anything but water it. I think if you grow thinks that like the climate you almost instantly become good at gardening
@@haralds4145 I put four of my grocery store basil in one pot and it's growing wonderfully.
I trust a French gardener WITH MY LIFE
You want this clay balls dont you
@@mrnorthz9373 ngl I do
Why? They really are Not known for gardening, mainly cooking. I ve lived in France 18 years, Never met 1 gardener.
@@Bombabingbong66In the 20 years I lived there I met some amazing gardeners with beautiful allotments. They were always leaving bags of courgettes, tomatoes, melons, etc on my door. French people are very generous and are very good gardeners! Maybe it varies by region? I lived in Provence and then Languedoc-Roussillon 😊

I'm growing over 100 species in my home but supermarkey basil ALWAYS dies on me. I'll give this a try next time I see basil for sale.
cut off a stalk and put it in water. it will root quickly

Your house must be PUNGENT lol
@@ahobbit1273 Why do you assume that?
Hmmm really? Sometimes water is the culprit too because they over or under water them so by the time you get itv home it has root wrot
OH. MY. GOD. The stores were LYING to meeeee... I swear Basil PTSD is a real thing.
I mean, it kind of does make sense; too many plants in the pot and the plants all die out quickly.
😂👌❤️
This is the most French sounding man I have ever heard! 100% pure, concentrated Frenchiness!
Every time I replant my basil it dies. Also when I water it, look at it, walk near it, think about it
It needs a good rich soil, also, put them at the right sun exposure, they are summer plants
@@thefrenchiegardenerwhat soil do you use 😊
They like temperatures above 18*C. You could use tapid water aswell. Watering from a saucer below is less mauldy than watering from above. Best of luck!
@@hiwelcometochillis2579 make some nutrient rich soil yourself. Don’t just use backyard dirt.
I bought organic topsoil, cow manure, organic fertilizer, worm castings, Do not use any pesticides if you plan on eating what you sow. My garden did a complete turn around once I added nutrients and mixed it well into the soil
@@hiwelcometochillis2579whatever you use for tomatoes. They are good companion plants
Tried that recently and now have an ungodly amount of basil in my garden. The amount of plants you get from just one pot is absolutely mind-blowing.
NO WAY?! I have bought like 5 supermarket basil plants and they always die. My mom even told me that the basil keeps dying because someone is sending bad vibes my way 😂
I'll definitely try this out!
Hahaha, give it a try!!
not the bad vibes 😭💀
@@potatochampignon4004😂😂😂😂
I had a crowded basil plant I got from trader Joe's. The young lady in the store told me to divide it into smaller pots and I did. I ended up with eight plants that grew so wild, and out of control. I gave away four of them. One died because it fell on the floor and I didn't see it there. The only thing I have to say is the basil plants I have left love water so I have to be mindful to water them every day. The fragrance, out of this world. They taste equally excellent.. Give it a try.
Those bad juju really manifest itself in a variety of ways from plants dying to random diarrhea! 😂
Yes yes yes
Alas I have already done this by my own self, I have parsley, rosemary all the herbs I bought from the supermarket thriving on my patio or window sill.
It’s nice to be validated, its not necessary but nice.
❤ I see many people going to the grocery store, snipping off a basil top, putting it in pocket, going home to transplant!! 😂❤😂 No one the wiser!! No harm to plant. No one notice the missing top in the forest of tightly packed basil!! 🌿
I like your super chill vibe. Makes gardening feel like a zen activity.
Thanks!! It truly is
The most comforting accent ♥️🥹
Green Love to you. ❤
nah, thats super pissed as French to being forced to use English as the de facto 'lingua franca' so we're gonna make a statement by going extra hard on the accent despite having a really good school system and none of the chicken/egg educational challenges facing Spaniards or Italians who would kill to improve on their English and see a much too thick accent as stigma. But surely the babes gonna love it : )
Fun fact, in Germany there's this collective rat race going on about who's gonna have the most audible American or Bri-ish accent. This includes coming up with imaginary hybrid accents (think Lena at Eurovision) which takes up way too much mental bandwidth often at the cost of the things actually said. Ergo, a nations history (and geography/size of media market, like when there's no dubbing of EN films) really plays a major role in how it's people approach English. Luckily Netflix will help remedy this over time.
@@velotill I never knew these things! Much obliged 😊🙌🫂
I found it quite difficult to figure out what he was saying before he went to the next thing.
"it will die 🤷♂️"
This is AMAZING info and I have so been victimized by basil trauma. Would love to hear your take on store bought rosemary plants.
I could listen to you talk to your plants all day
put your phone besides the plants and let them listen to him. They will grow into heart shapes ♥
I can’t focus on the video because your French accent sounds so incredibly beautiful. I really need to brush up my French, it’s been years and you helped me remember how much I loved this language
Beautiful? i’m french and i think it sounds horrible 😅
@@lonesome__queen1964 it’s very beautiful to me, honestly. I’m from Russia and I was learning French at university for two years. Our professors taught the language with a lot of passion and love towards it. I grew up fascinated by French musicals and my family always really liked watching Taxi and other French comedies (they were dubbed, but the original voice track could still be heard). So, to me the language and the accent was very attractive pretty much my whole life.
It's HORRENDUS🤮
@@lonesome__queen1964same, it's stressing me out 😅
My main tongue is French too and I wouldn’t say his accent sounds horrible but I find it a bit ridiculous.
Btw, I agree that French is such a beautiful language !
Your voice and articulation are so relaxing
Oh thank you!
So true! I could care less about basil …yet have listened to this video 5 times 😂… okay 10.
C'est tout le contraire pour moi, cet accent est terrible: aucun effort pour prononcer. 😂
À mes oreilles de francophone c'est super moche mais je constate que les anglophones love it. Chacun ses goûts.
Mais les conseils sont excellents.
Your accent is golden. How could anyone not follow your gardening tips when your voice sounds so elegant. 😊 PS basil is my nemesis always struggle to grow it. I'll try your tips.
Thanks sooooo much! Believe me you'll love Basil now!
Ever since having worked at an actual plant nursery where the people there knew what they were doing, I just can’t bring myself to buy much at big box stores. ESPECIALLY the grocery store, because half the time these plants are just so sad and abused. Or they can go into shock if you move them outside after taking them home. Just not worth it. Any instance you can, ✨always support your local nurseries✨
I love taking cheap supermarket herbs and propagating them into healthy plants
So cool right??
Also healthy fertiliser
This guy not only has one of the best accents I've ever heard, he's helped me keep my perpetually dying basil plants alive. Awesome lol
Amazing.. he makes gardening look so easy. Thanks I needed to know about this way of transferring Basil n Parsley
So nice of you
Your French accent makes me believe in you!
Haha
Thank you you beautiful human being.
You are so welcome
It's also because supermarket basil is grown in ideal greenhouse conditions and absolutely pumped with liquid fertiliser and we can't recreate those conditions at home. My supermarket basil isn't crowded with heaps of plants, and they still die despite being clipped back, fed, etc.
Also I think basil is fussier compared to other herbs (idk if this is the right word). The oregano and mint I bought from the supermarket are doing just fine with minimal care.
my basil struggled a lot at first but after a month and a sprinkling of plant food from Costco it's really thriving! I didn't even separate it, just put it in a big pot outside. but basil is definitely super fussy. my oregano, peppermint, thyme, and sage all grew back after dying off last winter. basil didn't come back at all and rosemary only grew a few leaves.
It's just better to grow basil from seed
@@raerohan4241agreed, then the basil adapts to your home growing conditions from the start and doesn't get shocked from the change. Also, the plants are so tender and leggy that once you take them out of the sleeve they collapse. Home grown plants will be stronger. So many reasons why the supermarket ones die.
I might be hormonal but I about cried seeing this. YEARS of thinking I’m killing Basil plants cuz I don’t have the growing gift. 👏🏻🙌🏻
Now you know :)
Thanks for the explanation, I feel better about my basil always dying within a week. I'll definitely separate and repot in the future. Green Love to You 💚
Green Love back!
his voice is sooooo sexy
All my grocery store basil I put in one big pot and set it outside my kitchen door for easy access to make my Caprese salad.
His accent sounds like caramel, its sweet af omg
My goodness, I'm getting flashbacks to when my mum would buy these plants from Lidl.
And I every time I suggested we plant them to save money and actually take care of the plants we just bought.
We have the space and resources - now she does it but for AGES it was a repeat purchase.
Now we have several different herbs :D
Enjoy them!!
Thank you for showing your tips. I have never used basil in my cooking and dont know what ro use it for. But this video shows me the technique that I could use for other plants of similar kind.
My pleasure 😊
His accent is so intriguing so now I must go out and buy a supermarket basil 🍃 😍
did just that and we have fresh basil every year 🥰
So cool!!
How did you know my basil died and I’m never gonna plant again? Lol. You a blessing
Hahahaha made me laugh!! 😂 Thank you!!
That “Add clay balls” hits different bruh 😭🤣😭
Thank you I just divided my store bought basil and put the ones I cut in the water seems working 🤞
Wonderful! Happy Growing!
i just bought seeds and surprisingly they grow 😭 now after 2 months they're already so big and I named them 😭
Congratulations you're a plant parent now
What are their names? ❤
They will die in october when they give flowers and end their reproductive cycle
Your voice is so peaceful and calming. Your entire demeanor is.
Aww thanks!
I could listen to this person all day.
Hercule Poirot has nothing on him,
too cute🤭💜🙏💜🇬🇧💜
One time we planted supermarket basil on our balcony, it literally exploded with growth. We could not eat that much 😂
Hahaha
I planted it out in the garden and it is bigger than some of my tomatos. I make pesto from it! :D
That is so true, I bought a supermarket basil plant, divided it, gave it away and the plants I have left is still too much for me to eat. I picked the leaves, dredge some olive oil over them and put them in a ziploc bag in my freezer for when I make soups and things like that. I had no problems.
The same thing happened to me and I don't have a balcony. My basil plant is in the window, or let me correct that taking over the window! Lol
I bought a mint plant once and in the next few days it died. I didn’t want to throw it away so I just continued to water it and it eventually grew back and is now thriving. :)
Mint is ridiculously hard to kill. You literally have to try to kill it to do it - and you still don't always succeed. Which is why you should always grow mint in a pot, not the ground, and never let it go to seed
Thank you. ❤ this is the same with cilantro. I feel much better after so many failed attempts.
This is gold.
Thank you man. Love the accent
Oh so that why OMOCAT named him Basil😃👍
Oh, this is why! I have many plants, but I have bought several basil plants throughout the years and not a single one has survived! Now I know why-Thanks so much for this video!
Very welcome!!
Thankyou ! We often don't "see" something despite it being right in front of your eyes !! A duh moment for all of us...thankyou for pointing this our
You can talk about absolutely anything, just keep talking, beautiful voice and accent.
Awww thanks!
Well said.
Green love to you all!
yes!! as someone who buys neglected supermarket/ikea cacti and brings them back to health, it sucks that people are led to believe they're doing something wrong in taking care of their plant when it's actually the seller's fault for selling the plant planted too dense, or in really shitty soil, or without proper drainage!
Exactly!!
Thank you from Hungary
Welcome!
Lol I'm in love with your accent
I picked up perfect plant, put it in a larger vase, then the weather started alternating hot and cold and rainy... my poor basil started "thinking" it's autumn and now is producing smaller and pointier leaves... 😂 2 weeks later it looks slightly better, but Idk if it'll fully recuperate...
Check my other video on how to prune Basil, that will help!
"Green love to you" is so cute
Making a new plant by cutting stem was great idea. Thanks 🙏🏻
I wish I knew this a few years back😢
Ah ok 🤔 no wonder my basils died too after a few days
Not anymore hopefully!
I could listen to this guy talk all day with that beautiful French accent. Ooh La La.
Hahaha thanks!
Awesome advice. And aww, green love to you, too.
Same to you!
Merci pour la technique qui permet de glitcher les plantes, et sexy l'accent my friend 😝
Haha merci!!
That accent ❤
He is overdoing it for likes... :) I am French-English and to be honest it gets on my nerves. I just can't, hahaha...
@@mrg4388 Yeah same, it feels so weird to me… I’m in Quebec and when we learn English we don’t learn it with a French accent, the teacher usually doesn’t have a strong Quebec accent, we’re encouraged to say the words properly. But I’ve heard that in France the teachers speak English with a French accent so that’s how the kids learn it. Idk it just feels weird to me, and it’s crazy to me that people find Quebec or French accents sexy😮
@@mrg4388mdr pas du tout en cours d'anglais tout le monde parle avec cette accent même 40 fois pire
if you'refrom quebec then you have no clue about the french accent i can assure you that's just how we learn english as in france schools are more exigent on grammar rather than pronunciation also quebec has nothing to do with france
@@mrg4388 If people like that accent, why not just keep it?
Plus it's not even sure that he exagerates it on purpose, it might be his genuine accent.
I bought three of them and planted them in a big pot and it's thriving it grew so much in couple of months ❤❤
Frérot cœur sur toi continue c’est du bon taff 😊
Very nice

Hello! When dividing such a root-bound plant like this, is it forgivable if I rip some roots in the process?
Yes, no problem. They'll develop new roots. The more roots they have, the quicker they'll grow again though, so try to do it carefully
Yes indeed! Some may die but most of the ones divided will make it 💚
Thank you for the replies, 1 out of 3 of my newly repotted store basils is doing well, and it has many new young leaves growing from the stems. The other 2 started to turn skinny and brown from the base of their stems (not woody) so I cut off their rotten roots and water propagate them. Their new white roots are visible today. The browning might be from me overwatering out of fear from ripping the roots
Another thing is to water the plant from below. Watering directly at the stem base will be worse than watering for example a small plate under the pot.
Merci beaucoup Monsieur! On behalf of everyone!
Merci!
He has such a cute accent
Love the calming accent...
I didn't hear a word he said...that french accent was mesmerizing. Who cares about the basil.
Gotta love this french accent❤❤😊
Ooooo!!! Thank you! I will do this as soon as I can!

I loved Basil 🌿and I planted a plentiful amount 😊🥰
What helped me A LOT was bio/eco basil, so basil that isn’t fertilized
I’ve got it for like a month, and it’s growing and not stopping at all, didn’t even need to repot it
Love this!!
I didn't understand a word you said, but I believe you.
Handsome. Oh, the basil looks tasty too.😊

Advice from a plant specialist: put your basil plant in a very large pot. Allow much light and water consistently.
I did so and watched my basil "invade" the whole pot! I was so proud!!!!
Thank you so much! That has always been that way! I will do that ❤

Great tip, thank you. I always do this with those pots of parsley from the supermarket - I now have a half-barrel full, and will freeze it to use until the new lot is ready next year.

I had no idea it was that easy to propagate Basil. So glad I saw this video as I think my basil plant that has been growing since summer is about to take a hit with this upcoming cold weather. I’m going to clip a couple pieces just in case.
Merci beaucoup Monsieur! Le timing est parfait.
