One of the big deals with his movie is that it was one of the first times a studio has treated superheroes as a genre and not a kind of story. This was a comedy heist movie set in a superhero genre.
@@dahobdahob That was seriously insightful. I never thought of it that way but the idea carries through to later movie and shows in all of the different mythoi ( i had to look up the plural of mythos and wow, that one took me for a loop).

What makes Ant-Man so fun is, at it's heart it's a heist movie. It has some super heroic moments and a teched-out villain for added flavor, but it is a simple heist movie. Plus, it's hilarious.
Even knowing of the character from the comics doesn't fully prepare you for where they took him for the MCU version. This way surpassed anyone's expectations.
For me it was the first Guardians. A D-List comic where two of the key characters were going to be fully CGI and starring the simple-minded guy from Parks & Rec? And it was going to have nothing to do with Earth or any other Avenger? On paper this looked like the time Marvel had gotten too confident in their abilities and was going to crash back to reality. They nailed it, instead.
As someone else pointed out putting aside the super cool special effects, at its core Ant-Man is just a fun, quirky heist movie. And it totally embraces the apparent silliness of using ants as tools (pushing sugar cubes, counting down) while also showing how valuable a tiny obedient army can be
Yeah, people were like "I'm going to watch it because it's technically an MCU movie and Paul Rudd is always charming," but then it was way better than we expected. Right up there with any of the others.
both this and guardians of the galaxy were disticnt changes in direction and tone that are vital to keeping people interested in the MCU, i just hope they can keep it up!
Don't knock yourself out, for underestimating Antman. Nobody knew it would be this good. 🙂 It also falls into the best Marvel formula; in that this isn't a "superhero" movie, so much as it is a movie of a different genre, with superheroes added. This is a *heist flick*, and that's how it plays out. 😎
I think that is a key to making the Marvel Cinematic UNIVERSE as good as it is. That concept. It's about this Universe. In a universe where Super Heroes exist, all the movies aren't JUST super hero movies. They are other genres of movies (heist, spy thriller, period film) in a universe where Super Heroes exist.
This movie was such a pleasant surprise. By this time, during the original release timeframe, I just gave up on questioning if the movies were gonna be good or not. I just assumed they were all gonna be awesome and that has worked out just fine. Most people were laughing at themselves for crying over the death of a tiny little ant…including myself.
While I saw many animated Suerheroes as a kid, my very first comic book was "The Micronauts" from Marvel. The characters eventually escape their microscopic world and come to ours... and the first official Superhero they meet was Ant Man (Hank Pym in this case). I only knew him from the cameo, but I thought he was so cool that I did my Jr. High Science Fair project on ants and have had some interest in ants ever since. I was so very, very happy with this movie and as you can tell for personal reasons, it's still one of my favorites of the MCU.
I remember when I first saw this at the cinema, and they were talking about the Quantum Realm and such, I started thinking "Wait, are they setting up the Microverse, are we getting Micronauts?". Sadly no, they're currently with Hasbro, although they are thinking of doing a film with them.
Girl, say what you want about your so-called poofy hair, but this is my fav look for you. When I was growing up, we called this soft waves with body, which is exactly what it is, and it’s beautiful!🖤
She needs to go back and watch the first versions of Spiderman, yes they're not directly linked at that point but No Way Home is going to totally confuse her and she'll not get any references.
What with all the behind-the-scenes problems this movie was having, up to and including losing Edgar Wright as a director, it's kind of fair that nobody thought this was going to be any good. The fact that for all those production issues, the finished product ended up being not just watchable, but genuinely really good, is really impressive
No, I rebuke that! I knew it was going to be good when I saw them filming parts of it in my hometown. I saw the set up they had going, and I just knew.
So totally excited that you enjoyed Antman, Paul Rudy's style of comedy definitely brought this Marvel film to the forefront, and he will continue to honor the Antman character throughout the remaining MCU films. Also, Willow?!?!, for real !!! Awesome. My first redhead crush.

The thing I love about these movies is that it introduces folks who haven't encountered one to the idea of a "universe". You are deep enough in to feel the pull of the web of stories. Watching them cross over, affect each other and make a larger narrative is why folks have collected comics for decades. Good one as always A
Yes, they do keep getting better. Heads up, from here on out, these Marvel movies are emotional rollercoasters. But so much fun. Can't wait for Monday. Willow is such a great movie, I've watched it at least 25 times. It's part of that great 80s fantasy craze, but it pokes fun at the genre too.

@Brad1980 LOL dud? Both were profitable. Is Iron Man 3 a flop? Image result for iron man 3 It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its action sequences and Downey's performance. The film was a box office success, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2013 and the sixteenth film to gross over $1 billion.
The mere existence of Paul Rudd makes the world a better place. Also, if you want another movie with an ant you can ride, watch "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," which is terrific.
Hank Pym was played by Michael Douglas, who has had a long distinguished career since the 60's. He portrayed Gordon Gekko in "Wall Street" another great 80's film for your list. Gordon Gekko is considered one of the great film villains of all time, and Douglas won both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his performance. At the beginning of "Ant Man", that was Douglas, de-aged through CGI, alongside John Slattery as Howard Stark.
Love your reactions. When I'm not at my best and need a little pick-up I just turn on one of your videos which makes my day a little more bearable. Thanks for the laughs 👍
My reaction to Antman was similar lol, I remember hearing about an Antman and I always said "Why? What good is he? Someone could just spray ant spray at him and he's dead." LMFAO. But I love the movies now :D
Fun fact about Hank Pym: In the comics, he's about a hair away from being a nuts supervillain. He's the guy that built Ultron (who in the comics is really one of the most dangerous monsters out there), he beat his wife (and tried to kill her at one point) and slept with his dead best friends girlfriend at his funeral and immediately dumped her when she got pregnant. This version of Hank is Mr Rogers in comparison.

Yeah... Everyone underestimates Ant-Man if they only heard the name, but this movie did a great job at presenting his powers... And they haven't even scratched the surface yet!! (NO SPOILERS, people!). And, let's face it: Paul Rudd is always a win!
Yea.. I remember being spoiled by a certain reveal in a trailer for Civil War... I mean, as a comics fan, I knew it was coming, but I would rather have seen it in the movie, not the trailer
This is why the MCU has legs. You have many people who are watching these movies for the first time and can binge all of it in months because it is so easily accessible.
Fun fact: Dr. Pym is played by the great actor Michael Douglas, who is the son of another famous actor the late Kirk Douglas, who is best know for starring in the original movie; protraying the role of Spartacus.
0:54 - that face and reaction was pretty much for everyone. I also heard of it thought it was a movie stupid. How do you get a man size of Ant to fight and not look ridiculous?! This is the most surprisingly, unexpectedly good MCU movie!
One Ashleigh MCU reaction once a month is not enough!!! I already want to see the next one .. look forward to your movie reactions. Bean giving you kisses at the end was soooo cute
As a kid, I thought Ant-man was the dumbest hero, and they made him even worse by making him abusive to the Wasp, and shunned by the Avengers. In the Comics, Ant-man was also Yellowjacket, and he was the one who created Ultron. Anyway, I went into this movie with the lowest expectations and loved it, and its sequel. This is one case where Hollywood improved on the story.
I think that's why they cast Martin Sheen for Hank and had him act as a cranky mission control for Scott. Because Hank's history might prove a problem for parents reading his stories to kids.
Fun fact, Scott in the comics actually was trying to steal the suit and actually managed to get the hang of its power without any previous training from Hank Pym.
If you liked the minature effects in this, you should check out The Incredible Shrinking Woman. It has the 70s version of these effects... Before that turns you off, I will add that it stars Lily Tomlin!

Ashleigh: "It's so cool how they made him look tiny! I want to be tiny! I want an ant friend! Oh no! Am I going to cry over a dead bug?!? More proof that the "Ant Man" movies are the good sequels to "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!" Which Ashleigh should watch next, if she hasn't already.
“When you put on a suit that makes you magically small, don’t question whether or not you should get on a saddled-up ant.” -the moment I had to pause the video bc I was laughing too hard to hear her talk
Fun Fact:Michael Dougles character at the beginning of the film was CGI ,they created looking like a young person. Michael Douglas was the Main Actor in Romancing The Stone. Speaking of Michael Douglas ,You should Watch Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction(Plus Glenn Close)
In case nobody else mentions it, another important cameo in this movie: comedian Garrett Morris in the car that Scott falls on was technically the first guy to wear an Ant-Man costume, on TV way back in the 70's. It was a Saturday Night Live skit, and a bunch of superheroes were having a party. When "Ant-Man" shows up, nobody knows who he is, and they make fun of him when he explains that he can shrink to the size of an ant with the strength of a human. "Hey, Hulk, come here! This guy's got the strength of a HUMAN!"
His buddy Kurt (David Dastmalchian) is in this MCU movie & is also in the DCU as well (The Suicide Squad and several other characters in some DC cartoons & CW/DC TV shows). When they were filming The Suicide Squad in Atlanta, him and several other of the actors from the movie came to a screening of Jay & Silent Bob Reboot because he was in it. Hubby and I had front row VIP seats and they were sitting 2 rows right behind us. I noticed before Kevin Smith pointed them out because I’d seen Steve Agee when we first got there picking up our passes at Will Call because he’s soooo freakin tall!! Dude is 6’7 and very unique looking. He bumped into me and was very nice and apologized. I told my Husband who he was and he had no idea who he was. Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher 2) was there as well. They all took pics with Kevin & Jason like the other VIP’s did & posted them on David’s Instagram.
Antman is just great fun. I went in with low expectations too and had best time. Also love Paul Rudd. He was always cute in a funny nerd kid of way but that scene with his shirt off showing his ripped torso I think every woman in the world had your exact reaction lol.
Switching from superhero-action to superhero-heist was a major shift in tone, and they nailed it So Well! I live for your reviews, as they let me experience MY joy in these films all over again.
A combination of Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes? Holy hell, that is going to be a torrential downpour of biblical proportions. This movie is so much fun!! I LOVE that Falcon got a cameo in this one and it was done so well. Also, Luis is by far, my favorite Marvel non-hero. Michael Pena actually got inspiration for this character from a friend of his, which makes this character all the better. Seeing where the movies are going (seen the ENTIRE MCU many times) and knowing what is coming, I know you are going to absolutely LOVE what is coming and you WILL cry. Like, Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes Combined. See what I did there?
Ant-Man (Henry Pym) was written in the 1960s as part of the Tales to Astonish comic series. They were basically science fiction anthologies. He was one of the founding members of The Avengers in the comic book, but when they did the Avengers movies they left him out. So this was Marvel's way of working him back in.
I love your reviews. They are always fun. I originally watched "Ant-Man" on a flight to New Orleans. Like you, I didn't really expect much; and, also like you, I fell in love with this movie and with Paul Rudd as the title character. I could watch this film a hundred times, and only find more to love about it. The film score by Christophe Beck is also one of my favorite Marvel film scores.
The actor playing Darren Cross (House of Cards guy) is Corey Stoll. Saw him HoC, this, Black Mass, the Many Saints of Newark. And he rapidly became one of my favorite actors.
Michael Pena (Luis) has become one of my favorite actors. I think I first saw him in Shooter (2007). He has great range and timing and I look forward to seeing more of his performances.

You know, I actually remember seeing a casting call for this movie back in early 2014. I probably would’ve considered applying if I didn’t think the idea was super weird. BOY was I so wrong, this movie is one of my favorites. So Ashleigh, would you ever consider that crossover idea with VKunia? Infinity War???
@@hardcorenativextreme Makes sense, it’s just that they’re both binge watching the whole franchise and they’re SO close to the same films! They’re two of my favorites and I’d love to see them team up!
In your wrap up you expressed frustrations with having so many balls in the air to juggle. This is actually one of the strengths of the Marvel films. Each episode is stand alone but the movies are all interconnected too. In one way you are so lucky. If you watched the films as they were released….you had big gaps in time. Now, as you watch the films, there is a time compression. You don’t have to wait too long to watch the stories in sequence. Still, a lot of exposition remains before you. I almost envy your journey that awaits.
I've only seen this one once so far .. when it came out. But its coming on full rewatch :) Good un. Oh, and, ya .. they do just keep getting better. Oh crap!! Civil War is up next!! Oh boy oh boy
So…I’m thinking that Ashleigh really needs to work the Raimi SpiderMan films, the 2 Amazing SpiderMan movies, and “What If?” into her schedule, apart from Marvel.
Heck, she has so many non-movie MCU items she is missing out on. The TV shows like "Agents of Shield" & Peggy Carter. The 10 minute "One Shot" storys (now available on Disney+). And then there is all the Marvel streaming stuff that used to be on Netflix. Its such a fleshed out universe and I hope she keeps digging (though, she can probably skip 'AoS'.)
"What If ... " is pretty cool. I thought the one about zombies was kinda lame, but otherwise a great series. I wonder if they are planning any further episodes?

the spider-man movies make sense from the marvel journey standpoint. what-if is a little iffy because it is spoilery but also because it is a tv show and ashleigh has said she is reluctant to hire an editor meaning we are sticking to a 2 per week reaction schedule. it would make good tv to watch on her own a year from now though.
When Hope said, "its about damn time" that was also because Ant-Man and Wasp were actually founding members of the Avengers in the comics and it took a while to bring them in the MCU. The second after credits scene is a small preview of the next movie.
Incorrect! When Hope said "About damn time," she was referring to Ashleigh's Monthly Millennial Marvel Movie Member Request. I say the same thing every time she drops one.

But Ant-Man and the Wasp is just as good as this one... if not better. One more thing, now that you've also seen Paul Rudd in his resurgence, as an actor. You should definitely check out Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Paul plays a character named Gary Grooberson in that film, he is hilarious... and the movie itself is a lot of fun, a well deserved 3rd chapter. Great reaction Ashleigh, keep doing what you're doing!

As someone else pointed out putting aside the super cool special effects, at its core Ant-Man is just a fun, quirky heist movie. And it totally embraces the apparent silliness of using ants as tools (pushing sugar cubes, counting down) while also showing how valuable a tiny obedient army can be
Ant-Man took everybody by surprise. It actually turned out to be one of my most favorite marvel movies.
Going to think it was partially because of Edgar Wright.. (Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim)..
@CYB3R2K30 No, it's good.
@CYB3R2K30 I rather enjoyed it..
Don't knock yourself out, for underestimating Antman. Nobody knew it would be this good. 🙂
It also falls into the best Marvel formula; in that this isn't a "superhero" movie, so much as it is a movie of a different genre, with superheroes added.
That's how i approach the movies too lol
Haha, yup! This was the last time I doubted a MCU project.
Not all of them are good though, just most of them.
@@jamesfowler5100 Weeell, none are really terrible in my book. Just not up to the standards that the MCU put such a high bar to.
Also didn't you watch Romancing the Stone? That had Michael Douglas (Hank) in it. A much younger version.
This is up there with Fried Green Tomatoes (she loved it as we expected) as a perfect for Ashley movie!!
In the opening scene….the white haired/white mustache guy was Howard Stark….Father of Tony Stark. I enjoyed how the film “deaged” Michael Douglas.
The turning point in this movie was when Ashleigh said, "I like Ant-Man".
Girl, say what you want about your so-called poofy hair, but this is my fav look for you. When I was growing up, we called this soft waves with body, which is exactly what it is, and it’s beautiful!🖤
I just love, love, love how much Ashleigh loves the MCU. I can't wait for her to watch the next one - Captain America: Civil War.
I can’t wait till she gets to Doctor Strange
knowing the ride she is in for..... omg
Oh yay is that the next one? It’s so good!
Civil War is going to wreck her. It's so intense but so good.
She needs to go back and watch the first versions of Spiderman, yes they're not directly linked at that point but No Way Home is going to totally confuse her and she'll not get any references.
"I really underestimated this movie going in."
*Everyone* underestimated this movie going in.
So true! Guilty of that myself.

Being such a huge Cure fan I HOWLED in the theater with laughter when the Disintegration album started playing.

Everyone went into "Antman" wondering what they were getting into and then coming out loving it. Louis, Scott, Cassie, Hope, Hank...
...and Antony lol
Fun fact about Hank Pym: In the comics, he's about a hair away from being a nuts supervillain. He's the guy that built Ultron (who in the comics is really one of the most dangerous monsters out there), he beat his wife (and tried to kill her at one point) and slept with his dead best friends girlfriend at his funeral and immediately dumped her when she got pregnant.
This version of Hank is Mr Rogers in comparison.

THIS is why I love you and QueenBlaze. You both are very honest, down-to-Earth, and know how to make really good reaction videos. A friend from across my town that I haven't spoken to in years, I caught up with and mentioned your name (Southern Illinois). I thought I was the only one in the area. You really are that amazing. Much love from the mid-west, and not just from me.
Loved your review!! The first Fridays of the month are the best Fri-Yay’s!!! Have a great weekend!

@@angrytheclown801 You mean Michael Douglas?
@@deanna9808 I stand corrected. In my defense, Hollywood actors are all the same.
Fun fact, Scott in the comics actually was trying to steal the suit and actually managed to get the hang of its power without any previous training from Hank Pym.

I was having a really bad day, but this has cheered me up so much! Thanks Ashleigh 😊

In order to truly appreciate young Paul Rudd, you must watch Clueless.
As a kid, Clueless was the first move I got to watch without grown-ups.
This movie surprised everyone. but its hard to go wrong with Paul Rudd and Michael Pena for comic relief
Antman blew me away with how great it was. I figured it would be a fun watch, but it was a great film all around.

Seriously, strongly recommend starting on the older Spider Man movies

I could watch this film a hundred times, and only find more to love about it. The film score by Christophe Beck is also one of my favorite Marvel film scores.
That's Antman's secret weapon. You underestimate him (and the movie) and you're pleasantly surprised...
The actor playing Darren Cross (House of Cards guy) is Corey Stoll. Saw him HoC, this, Black Mass, the Many Saints of Newark. And he rapidly became one of my favorite actors.
Now that you've met Antman, you absolutely HAVE to watch the bloopers from this movie. Paul Rudd is crazy on a Ryan Reynolds level!

In one way you are so lucky. If you watched the films as they were released….you had big gaps in time. Now, as you watch the films, there is a time compression.
