  • League of Legends is a game played by boys and girls all around the world, but how come the Esports scene has no female players?
LoL Esports has existed for many years now and through out that time the female player base has seen no rise.
Why is that? Well in this video we go into many of the factors and details that could be why there is no females in the LCS or in Esports in general.

For the Geguri part, there's kind of some context missing. For starters, Geguri (and the other Korean players) joined the team midway through the season. They were already winless even before the Koreans got there. By season two, they actually turned things around (although Geguri doesn't get a lot of play time now).
Unlike some of the other all female pro teams, Geguri is actually really good at the game. She isn't in OWL just cause she's a girl. She was a perennial top 100 player in ranked who had reached top 10 in Asia leaderboards (the hardest leaderboard) many times. She's legit.

I feel like main reason of women not being in Pro League is because:
First - majority of playerbase are still men like i would say around 60% or more of any game
Second - in those % you need to think how many of those people are in those small percentage of ranks are girls if they are already a minority
Third - if you arent good enough compared to people from all around diamond to high challenger even if you qualify > you wont get into the League.
And as a girl I can say that even if a woman would try to get into League and put her out there for a team there are still more players who are better than her and majority of them would be guys who spend more time on games.
I dont think its okay to make only female teams - its pathetic. If someone is worthy to join a team they will get in no matter if they are female or male - your skill matters not your genitalia wtf.

as a girl i agree, but i have to say that "female distraction" thing is a deep issue. that's why women are kept at home and didn't allowed to work mostly. "no women on board" they say [they believed it was missfortune ;) ]. the reason was just keeping the sailors not distracted.

Thats great, but RTS and MobA is not the same thing.
It sounds harsh when people list the reasons why there are no females in pro League but I don't think many people mean to be...
Every single guy I know gets fucking ecstatic when they come across an actual girl who plays well, hell half the time they almost fall in love with them so I dont but the whole "boys club" narrative pushed by the retarded feminists and sjws.
There is bound to be a fringe minority of guys who are like that but a girl who has a genuine passion for the same game they like is the wettest of dreams for most male gamers, should she also happen to be skilled it would probably just explode their brains from excessive dopamine hits.

motivation is the ability to commit to something despite obstacles or difficulties that may stand in your way. if it fails at the smallest obstacle, it was worthless.
instead of being negatively swayed by seeing a video like this, you should get motivated to prove that it's wrong. how is some random guy going to try to tell you that you don't have what it takes? what the fuck does he know about you? that's how you should react.

    • @shanecharles4589
      @shanecharles4589 2 роки тому +10

To be completely fair and truthful, the reason there are no pro females is men have faster reaction time on average. This is a fact you can easily look up, and men are about 20 ms faster with visual stimuli, and about 30 ms faster with auditory stimuli. Since most people understand ping, its like females are all playing with +20-30 ping simply based on reaction time. Men used to be hunters, and we would die if we didnt have fast reaction times to go with our muscular physiques. Raw reaction time needed to play against other super fast reactors. Think women playing softball instead of baseball, it literally helps give them more time to react as the ball moves slower and is larger.

I remember there was a study done on female vs male chess players, which was trying to figure out why there aren't more pro female chess players (there are some, but it is largely male dominated).
The study placed female chess players against male chess players, but didn't tell them that they were playing against men. When the female players were told they were playing against a man, they lost more. When the female players were told they were playing against a woman, they won more.
So what does this say about women in these areas, like chess and esports? Possibly women are socialized to *feel* less capable than men, and to *feel* that men are inherently better. To feel a lack of confidence when their opponent is a man, and competitive when against a woman.

She stopped wearing her headset in COD because literally all match she would get sexual stuff said to her & sworn at, by her own team! Each rematch people would complain if she was places in their team despite usually being in the top 3 ranked players, just due to her being female. When she uses her username which sounds male she never gets these problems, sure she will get the occasional 'go fuck your mom' joke but nothing near the level of abuse she would get if she was a girl.

    • @jacobb5484

NotHelix it’s less about the player reaction and more a case of sponsor reactions.
While some teams are sponsored to boost brand recognition, with big names like Samsung, this all girl team was created almost solely for that goal.
Often sponsors will inevitably choose a girl with the best “story” to the detriment of the person.
with men this is usually based around name recognition and prior achievements. Unfortunately women are less interested in league so finding one takes more time and so most team organizers just give up and go with the prettiest face.
Similarly going pro is a big risk. It is almost a full time job with extra pressure around every tournament. This leads to certain personalities risking everything. Unfortunately with women this personality has better options with a higher chance of success. Music is the clearest, but with STEM being pushed, and reporting and acting being so popular esports have less appeal to these people.

because pro gaming is a sphere which requires a combination of huge amounts of free time, intelligence and dedication which all together can only be found in a small amount of people already no matter the gender.
because a girl is less likely to be interested in games or take them seriously purely because it’s a male oriented community (and can often be hostile or downright predatory towards you if you are female) and your interests aren’t as likely to be shared among your peers as if it were if you were a boy + girls (and minorities in general) are put under more societal pressure and have more real life responsibilities, so they aren’t as usually socially inept or detached as boys often are, which is a quality you probably need to have if you are willing to put thousands of hours into “getting gut”-
because reality check. esports are legitimately so detached from life and someone with willpower and wits would probably prefer to actually contribute to society in a meaningful way rather than play video games for others peoples entertainment.
because leagues creme de la creme is less than a percent of its player base. now look at those numbers compared to humanity as a whole and an already small chance of a smart girl with no social life picking up a video game and sticking with it. simple math.

I think the main issue with team sports/esports is that it would be hard to find an all female team that can actually grind as much as an all male team. There may be some solo female players that can play like men however it would be harder to integrate them into a male team without having any conflicts in the long run. Hoping for a female pro player specially in DotA.

honestly, I think part of the reason girls are less known in pro gaming or even gaming in general, Is cuz it's less socially acceptable for girls to play those games. As someone raised female, I remember there were times where my cousins and I would have sleepovers, where the boys got to go downstairs and play halo the whole time, but the girls had to stay upstairs and watch a black and white movie with our grandma, and when all of us were upset because we wanted our turns on games, we got yelled at cuz it's not 'lady-like.' Even now, my brother is getting gifted PlayStations, he has his own Xbox, and my mom bought us a switch, my brother had no interest in the switch so I took it cuz it was supposed to be for all my siblings, and once I spent my own money getting games I wanted to play, then my brother showed interest and my mom told me she would put a lawsuit against me cuz I used my own money on the switch and didn't want my brother to mess up my animal crossing island. I also saved up money for two years to get my own PC, which my brother literally has more playtime on it than I even do cuz when he visits he spends hours playing on it. The last time my siblings were over, I let my sister play on it cuz she hadn't yet, and she was only on for 3 hours but the whole time my brother was complaining and I got in trouble for not letting him play and "being cruel to him" even though he literally has over 48 hours played on the game he was wanting to play. Plus my male cousins get away with gaming for hours, shouting slurs at people online, and ignoring their work and it gets excused away with "oh boys will be boys." but I spend five hours on my tablet working on an art project and I get literally screamed at because I'm "being lazy and unproductive" and I get my electronics confiscated despite the fact that I'm an adult and I paid for all of them myself. Gaming just isn't as accessible to some girls, to the point that we get threatened over it, and I hate it cuz I think it's a huge part of misogyny in the gaming community that gets largely overlooked.

    • @venturoushope2846
      @venturoushope2846 2 роки тому +2

Beautifully worded. A think a large portion of the “you’re lazy” argument comes from the women of the house being expected to do all the cooking, housework, child care, etc.. I remember once my mom called me to fold the clothes with her and I asked her why dad couldn’t help her instead, and she told me, “Men don’t do this stuff.” Even though chores like those are literally life skills. Also the double standard that if a man does something that’s seen as masculine (ex. gaming) he’s excused for it, but when a girl does something that’s seen as feminine, the overwhelming response is that she’s basic. Like the stupid stigma over pink gaming setups. Black and red setups don’ get the same hate, do they? I could honestly go on and on about this topic.

@@venturoushope2846 exactly!! But when we say something about it it gets ignored because our experiences aren't seen as valuable as men's do, it's exhausting. An example I saw of this was in Mr. Beasts UA-camr paintball tournament, wherein the only all female team was taken out almost immediately because they were targeted and cornered in an area where they didn't have weapons, I saw so many comments saying "well this proves that girls just aren't good at it like guys are." Or "it's funny they play shooter games for a living but can't shoot irl." When in the video the girls said that a team coming at them literally shouted to the others "let's target them" (probably not the exact wording I'm too busy to rewatch the vid rn) and didn't even give them a chance. Plus, the only other team with a girl on it was the one that won the tournament! It's like, maybe don't balme something on my character when there's a clear bias against me for something I have literally no control over. But, in order for men to do that then they'd have to acknowledge that they aren't superior and that women are actually capable of amazing things when given the chance. But that goes against everything they've been raised to believe, and it doesn't stroke their egos.

I think what this is kind of ignoring is how female gamers are treated. If you say you're a girl in any sort of video game with teams, you'll be barraged with sexist, rude and awful things. Girls do have to work twice as hard to get into competitive gaming because other players will be absolute assholes to them. Seriously, I've had friends of mine say they give up on overwatch or LoL just because of what people have said to them. You might say "develop a thicker skin", but that's hard when every single match of something you're supposed to be enjoying involves people tearing you down in every way possible. Hell, I avoid games with voicechat all together these days, just because of how stressful it is. The gaming community is incredibly sexist and incredibly harsh. And honestly, it's kind of heartbreaking. Girls will get mocked for tiny mistakes, for playing anything but support, for just... being a girl. It's not as simple as an interview, or filling out an application. If a girl wanted to join a competitive team, she'd be exposing herself to insane amounts of toxic stuff. For a lot of people, that just isn't worth it.

Personally being a girl playing competitive video games since 14 (GW2 ranked legendary x2 in season 2) I started to have issues with my gender growing up because when I lost my rank due to soft reset or I joined other games with a ranked system (league was the case) I would get made fun of for every little mistake I did. Even though I play against most d3 and bellow players in normals and sometimes even in ranked while all my friends are either silver or low gold I still get no respect. I had to change my name into something less femenine because sometimes my jungler would int my lane on purpose because "you're a girl you should be playing support/you can't play this game" and "we lose because we have a girl on our team". I almost quit league multiple times despite the fact I was placed high gold in my second season by playing mid/jungle, and for 2 whole seasons I didn't play ranked because of anxiety and fear people assumed I was a girl and start to int on me again. I'm not surprised there are no girls in competitive play because not only do we get a lot of attention because it's not "norm" but also because the expectations people have of us as players are negative and literally start talking shit before they even see anything. I have a lot of female friends who are currently ranked high diamond and don't play support but hide their gender because of discrimination.
At this point, I have quit ranked, my anxiety is worse since I joined league and I can't bring myself to play any games with ranked systems anymore bc I grew up believing I was worthless for being a girl despite the fact I made it to the highest rank lader in multiple games.

We really only duo twice a month... if that. I am an adc main with a 68.4% winrate with Lucian AND 69.4% on Kai'sa. Had one guy I was dating say he'd boost me with his Gold II skills on our first date. When I told him I was D2 (at the time) he laughed and said "It's not cute to lie". Being a female league player, I don't often say I'm a girl. You get flamed for every tiny mistake that every player makes, just because of your gender. It's also worse because I'd say I'm average to a slightly better than average player, having made it to Gold 5 this season (however I only played ranked for a short time and got Silver 2 in promos). When you aren't at a higher than average skill level, and just enjoy playing the game at whatever rank you are at, you're ridiculed even more for being "bad at the game." If those Riot statistics are true, there are many more males ranked below me than there are above me. It really makes you feel beaten down and inadequate for wanting to be competitive because you genuinely enjoy the gameplay.
Really everyone should just be treated the same, and unfortunately, you can only do that currently by staying anonymous. I hope that it becomes easier for female players to integrate into pro play in the near future, because as many comments have already explained, it's extremely difficult for various reasons. I'd love to see female players in Worlds.

Well, I've played thousands of games and I can tell you your gender means nothing in this game. If you play well you will get praised most of the times and if you play bad you will be flamed.
If you want to test it create an account with a male name and you will see how it doesn't matter at all. In fact maybe you are treated even worst.
I've been d5 for 3 years in a row and people treat me like shit even when I don't make mistakes. I've been said things that you can't even imagine. People care about results and it is how it should be.

@@rmartin I don't hide or announce my gender in game, I don't have a gendered ign and I don't think most people have gendered igns. As with most online gaming, people just assume I am male. I agree that a lot of the time, gender doesn't matter, and online gaming can just be a toxic cesspool equally to everyone. What I am commenting on, is that from my experiences when I have let my gender be known, I've been subjected to more pointed flaming. I'm also commenting about the state of gender equality in esports and how it's difficult for female pro players to get onto teams or play in high ranking tournaments.
Objectively I'm not sure about how often you are treated differently for gender, because I don't say anything about it usually! This is just my own isolated experience.
Anyway, we're all gamers here, and every one of us has been told nasty things while gaming online. It's no fun for anyone and yes that is why the mute feature is a thing. It's a bit contradictory to say gender doesn't matter, and then say that you might be treated worse as a male... I'm not sure what exactly it is I am "hiding" from using my gender...

Pandacute is actually much more pro despite of their name. They were all raised in problematic families and most of them spent their childhood gaming, 24/7. There was one girl who only played because her parents did not want to have anything to do with her and left her at home with only a compiter. I will say that they will be as good as any other team due to heavy practicing, but i do understand why females are mocked or discouraged from gaming. Anyways, pandacute is pretty decent, though may not be up to world championship level, they are still extremely skilled players

    • @BnMProductions11

They really won't be. There already exists female csgo leagues that practice just as much and the best team in the female league would get trounced by the worst team in the major. Women and men excel in different areas and have different interests. Men consistently test stronger in the areas that would assist in video games such as spacial relativity, reaction times and hand eye coordination. Also men tend to be more deviated from the mean in terms of performance metrics and intelligence. I'm pretty sure the male leagues are subsidizing the tournament earnings of the female leagues just like tennis now because we apparently feel the women deserve the same earnings as the men even though they draw less crowds, less revenue, less advertisers and they play slower less competitive games. Can we just accept that women and men are equals but not mirror images, they each have their strengths and weaknesses and we should embrace those instead of punishing the gender that is excelling in a certain area because of this notion that they're holding the other down. Women have equal access to computers and steam however through a combination of less skill in that one specific area and less interest do not really exist at the very top end of play, just because something isn't equal doesn't automatically mean there is this invisible patriarchal driving force keeping it that way.

@@BnMProductions11 The problem is that a lot of these brain differences aren't backed up by science. Scientifically speaking male and female brains are over 90% the same or comparable. Not only that, but the brain is highly malleable, and what was true 20 years ago could be a lot less true today. A reason why many women may not have had as good hand-eye coordination could be due to playing less sports and video games back in the day.
Another reason why this is false, is that many studies show serious bias in these tests or that tests are changed. One year women did better than men in the SATs. The next year those segments were removed. There's also evidence that even just telling women that they will not perform as well as men in areas, can drastically decrease performance.
The top female player in Tennis is undefeated. The only top players she's never beaten are those that retired before she could get a chance to play them. I doubt you could say the same about the top male tennis player.
Yes while most women are not as powerful as men typically in terms of physicality (Strength and Endurance), that's not the same as any sort of mental ability. Which even this isn't hard coded in terms of things like Genes or Body Frame, but instead more so due to hormones. We see this with regard to physical performance from Male to Female Transexuals who have been on hormones. In terms of mental differences, this is even MORE true when you look at just how malleable our brains are. Practice LITERALLY makes perfect. Take chess for example: The #1 factor that differs from those in the top to those beneath them are the number of hours practiced, and it's the same for musical skill. Sure there are SOME exceptions to this rule with savants, but this is the
So to say that "Well boys are just physically and naturally BETTER at Video Games due to their brains", really is just an oversimplification not backed up by Science.

@@TheAyanamiRei you use the 90% similarity in brains to back up your argument.. you know that we share 98% of our genes with the banana? so we as a species have more in common with a banana than the male and female brain have to each other... going by your example of simplified logics based on non-founded causation.

mabse3 ok so basically we actually share about 60% of our genes with bananas because everything alive evolved from a single cell organism and the reason why there is variety is how everything evolve. Geguri is actually one of the best Zarya's I've seen in the game, but's that's really all she plays. Basically what I'm saying is they should've put her into the chinese feeder team before Dragons so she could get used to that level of play with other heroes. Another factor in Shanghai's 0-40 streak was just the fact that China decided to not pull from the best players they had. For some reason the Chinese government recruited a bunch of their "B listers" so to speak, instead of players like Eileen, Vanessa, or RIVEN, who would've dominated owl at the time

The FGC and specifically the 3D fighter scenes have quite a lot of high level competition from females with Tanukana, Yuyu, Cuddlecore, Kayane, and more competing at incredibly high levels in Tekken and Soul Calibur. The argument of cuteness seems to hold some weight given all the aforementioned main characters such as Xianghua, Ling, Asuka, and, well, cute female characters in general.
As for a representation of skill, Kayane is arguably the best Xianghua player in Soul Calibur. Cuddlecore’s taken games from top 3 US players. Yuyu’s has had arguably the best Ling on the planet at certain points in time, and is still competing at a high level after taking a break to have children.
The time argument is also pretty spot on, with Tanukana and a couple others saying they’ve foregone work, relationships, and other priorities just to get better at the game.
I think the fact fighters are such social scenes (given most legacy players learned at arcades or in person at tournaments vs playing online) has allowed for higher female representation at the highest level because it’s a lot easier to shittalk female players for nothing more than the fact they are female over voice than in person. Not that shittalking should ever be conducive to someone leaving a scene, but at the lowest entry level it can definitely hurt.

If you watch a few interviews with these players, you start to get the sense that maybe female players at the top level are uncommon because a lot of them don't actually want the pro gamer life, as I imagine many male players don't actually want the pro life. The amount of time dedicated to practicing and mastering competitive games are on the level of obsession as master chefs, or crazed artists who don't allow time for breaks or anything else in their lives. Totally commendable, but also completely understandable why only a few can get into that spot on the top and stay sane.

Something I think also contributes to the lack of female pro players is parental approval. Many players in pro gaming have had to prove their profession to their parents and Doublelift is a more extreme example where he left his parents home to pursue his career. In addition, gaming is seen as a male sport. Look at the things they advertise to gamers and how they advertise them. On twitch everyone's seen them pushing pizza rolls and energy drinks, products consumed mostly by young men. Speaking of twitch, it's not exactly friendly to women. If there's an event going on twitch chat spams grill if there's a woman on screen unless they speak in which case they spam HotPokket(the emote). Anyway I'm drunk.
