Wow, someone made a complete, laser accurate model of the entire structure before it burned. I’d call that a miracle. The building goes unharmed for 800+ years, survives WWII, and only after being perfectly mapped with laser accuracy, does it become damaged. Amazing.

@John Plum there is reason for so much of the stained glass, statues, etc beyond the inherent beauty. These works of art tell the story of the Bible. These works were invaluable at a time when most of the populace was illiterate. There were no mass produced Bibles and even if someone did have a copy (handwritten, no less) they most likely couldn't read it. The art and beauty draws you in, but look closer and you'll find all the stories of the Bible. Also, the very nature of Gothic architecture was to create a massive interior space while allowing as much glass as possible to allow light. All of this combined gives someone the reaction naturally to look up. Upwards towards Heaven and God. Upwards towards the majesty of what was created in His name. You've got it all wrong.

I am no medieval architect nor am I a construction worker but I would say rebuild the roof first and then restore the inside because I don’t think they would want rain pouring down on them when they’re working on the inside.

Three years? I think it'll take that times three to fully restore... Even utilizing modern building methods, the Lady is still an extremely detailed Gothic Masterpiece, and at almost 900 years old, she isn't just some old burned mansion that you can slap some new construction onto and hope it holds! There is a meticulous process involved here requiring the skills and services of knowledgeable architects, engineers, historians, scientists, and dedicated craftsmen! Besides, they haven't even determined the extent of the heat, nor water damage to the stone construction itself yet... This is all going to take much time...
3 years to reopen. Not to rebuild. They won't have to wait for the whole roof and spire to be achieved to reopen the cathedral.

Just because someone saved these pieces of history does not mean we didn't want to save people. The people who saved the artifacts knew exactly where they were. They risked their lives. This is an ignorant assumption.
It's not "property"....its CULTURAL HISTORY that represents the beliefs, lives, joys, struggles, passions of millions of people over the generations. It is a tangible connection to our past and that is NOT trivial.

My favorite building in my town is the clock tower in the main street/ downtown area and I as well as many others would be very sad if it were to burn down so I understand what the people of Paris are feeling
...Maybe three to re-open it to the public, but to do the thorough job of restoration - that is without any sections blocked off and completely without scaffolding? I'd say the better part of a decade! You can't rush this stuff!

It's France we're talking about.... You know? Where they need a break between 12pm and 2pm for lunch and everything closes at 5:30pm. So they end up like working 10 minutes a day.... 3yrs.... more like 5 or 6.

sanjuansteve. With all the smoke damage an weakened surrounding structure, it will be a tremendous project. It will not be a clean build. First the destroyed material will have to be removed. Then they will try to preserve and repair as much as they can. I anticipate it actually costing much more than their current estimate.

Dropping thousands of pounds of water on a massive stone cathredral whose stability is not known is not a very good idea. I am glad they didn't take Trump's advice on that... however when he told them to act quickly, rather than the ordinary snails pace associated with firefighting, that was a smart bit of advice.

I’m very curious about about the whole part that the Notre Dame Cathdral being part of French heritage. But why is there less shock about the ongoing destruction of indigenous monuments in the US and Canada? If the Notre Dame Cathedral is part of French heritage; but why are indigenous people’s cultural heritage not part of American or Canadian heritage? Why is there so much apathy regarding that.

No, they aren't going to use different materials because they need the cathedral to look like the original. Also concrete and steel burn way faster than you think, when the steel beams melt, the whole building goes down.
