  • Before I do all the maintenance on my 1996 Ford Econoline E-350 Van, I thought it would be a good idea to smoke-test the intake and the exhaust to see if I have any issues. The exhaust manifold can crack on these engines so I wanted to see if they had any leaks. I also see if there are any other leaks in the entire exhaust system. A Diagnostic smoke machine is an amazing tool that can quickly show you exactly where a leak is if there is any. I also smoke test the intake system to see if there were any leaks there as well. To do this I use the ANCEL S3000 Smoke Leak Detector kit. I show you how to use it, and share my thoughts on it. These diagnostic Smoke test machines are a bit expensive. but they are useful to have when doing diagnostic work on vehicles. I hope this video was useful and thanks for watching!

Cool. You should make yourself some adapters to check for pressure drop in radiator (15PSI max) and even heater core (5 PSI max). Just run air until desired PSI, shut it off, and check for pressure drop after a given amount of time. Heck, you could even smoke them as well if you wanted to.

Me and my wife just started converting a 2006 e250 4.6 and I’m having trouble tracking down a vacuum leak. The only codes it’s giving me is a p0171,p2195 and my fuel trims for just bank one are crazy high at 28-29 positive at idle then drop when raising the rpm. I tried spraying carb cleaner around but did not notice any changes to the fuel trims. I don’t see any noticeable hoses that are cracked. Just wondering if you had any suggestions? Also one more question I’m also disconnecting the rear ac system and when I am going to recharge the system how much refrigerant are you going to put in since it’s significantly smaller. Anyways your videos are great please keep posting more of these van videos !

I know a smoke machine would help we are just trying to keep cost down as much as possible but might be worth getting one I’m not sure.

Sounds like a vacuum leak if the fuel trims are high positive at idle then improve with rpm. What is bank 2 like? If its mostly effecting 1 bank then I would say maybe a an intake runner/gasket has a leak, i would just keep spraying the carb cleaner, smoke testing is the best way to figure out for sure if there is a leak, maybe someone had a party smoke machine you could maybe rig something up with that 🤔 no obvious exhaust manifold leaks? That could cause the condition you have but the leak has to be big enough

I really doubt its your o2 sensor but cause your fuel trims seem to be responding. If in doubt though you could swap 02 sensors from bank 2 to bank 1 and see if the fuel trims follow. It is notable that only bank 1 is effected, is bank 2 perfect or is it high positive too but not as bad?
