What carefree happy days I had as a kid listening to the Pirate Stations. I lived in Great Holland, Essex, and could see the masts from the shore. They also did boat trips to Caroline from Walton Pier, and I have 8mm home movie footage of it. After London went off air in August 1967, The Prisoner came soon after on ITV reminding us that there are always some out there who try and control us. The professional seekers of unhappiness... 😔

How right you are. Caroline was a lifeline to another, more pleasant, reality during my youth in 60's London...long hot summers and cool beautiful women, with a lot of class.

Let's not forget it was the pirates who brought pop music to Britain. Without them we would not have heard about motown, stax Atlantic soul, ska and bluebeat, genres of music the BBC knew nothing about. They were such great times listening to them on a tinny transistor radio from early evening onwards. There are so many pop songs that instantly remind me of all the pirates when they are played today. Those Were the days.

Maybe I imagined the Ed Sullivan show Soul Train, Carol Burnett show, etc etc etc they all had these artists all over them in visual as well as audio.. @@Chimp981 we are talking about 2 DIFFERENT countries. You are obviously from USA where music was readily available. In the uk it was impossible to listen to pop music anywhere but from the pirates.I suggest you do some research before making rash statements as you are totally clueless about British music history.

@@stuartbrixton6260 So how do you think we heard about your Beatles, amongst others before they ever went on those shows which I mentioned? Bob Monkhouse and others promoted the groups too in their shows 🥳 lmmfao 🤣🤣🤣 Do your research kid! 🤡

Todays generation may have the mobile with all the social media, but the Pirates of the 60`s kept many youngsters of the day truly entertained, the crackles & fading were all part of the enjoyment.

Sad to hear of Ronan O'Rahilly being so ill.He certainly brightened up the 1960s. Pop music has never been the same since Harold Wilson and Co forced the "pirates" off the air.

@ Kingcw: Harold Wilson always was a prat. It was he and his government who outlawed capital punishment (although I respect that some may agree with that), created those stupid county names such as Greater Manchester and of course prevented Roy Wood, the estate of Carl Wayne and the rest of the Move from getting their 'Flowers In The Rain' royalties.

I totally agree with your sentiments bill....I am just so happy to have lived through those times and to relish the memories of Radio Caroline...far too many to list here.
One part I hold so dear is the memory of Johnnie Walker, who in my opinion is the greatest/best DJ ever, communicating with car drivers sitting in their vehicles using their headlights to "talk" with him and the thousands of listeners at Frinton. I ALWAYS tried to return home from my girlfriend's to listen to him at 11 pm!

Pirate radio always was the birth place of new ideas. Sadly, in The Netherlands it is not possible anymore to run a pirate station. You will be caught within hours and treated like a very significant criminal.
And, allthough you still may turn on a transmitter at international waters, nobody is allowed to provide anything to it. If you do, you are also treated like a major villan ...
Radio now dies a silent death, thanks to anti-pirate laws. There simply isn 't any significant renewal in the buisiness anymore, and therefore it 's not 'hot' anymore to listen.
