  • In this video I visit the Rotunda Museum, Scarborough Art Gallery & Woodend, taking a look at the collections & exhibitions. I also caught up with the Chief Executive of Scarborough Museums & Galleries, Andrew Clay, to have a chat about the organisation & its offer, plus its plans for the future.
All 3 buildings I visit are in close proximity to each other, within easy walking distance of Scarborough's famous South Bay on the North Yorkshire coast.
(Special thanks to Emma Hallam and all of the staff at Scarborough Museums & Galleries for their help and cooperation in making the video.)

That's exactly what I do, go straight to the sea front, visiting the same doughnut store and the same arcades. Been loads of times not realising so much more to see, near the sea. Brilliant video and can't wait to go again to see other things.

My grandmother lived in Scarborough most of her life in Tindal St.
In the fifties and sixties my parents and I would drive from Edinburgh to Scarborough (11 hours) for our annual two week holiday. Parents and grandmother are buried in Woodlands Cemetery.
For my seventieth birthday in April this year, my daughter and I stayed at The Grand (wonderful experience) and visited exactly what your film is about from the Rotunda up and across the little bridge thro the gardens to the Art Gallery and Woodend.
Great to watch your film and be reminded of our time in Scarborough, I have old British Rail posters framed on the wall in my lounge.
Scarborough will always hold a special place in my heart.
    Cheers Andrew 👍

I went to all these three places today after watching this video, and recommend them to anyone else. The bacon sandwich at the café I also recommend.

Richard Adams wrote a biography of William Smith called 'The map that changed the world'. An excellent read and well worth visiting the museum if you are in the Scarborough area.

Interesting but John Atkinson Grimeshaw didn’t have The Castle by the Sea built. It was built in 1866 some ten years before Grimeshaw would live there. It was built purely as a Lodge House for Thomas Jarvis who was a local Scarborough brewer and had the magnificent The Towers built for him. In 1876 he leased the lodge to Grimeshaw and he made many changes including the curved double flight of steps leading up to the conservatory, this he also extended to grow exotic plants, these plants provided pigments for his paints. One day while relaxing he was reading a book of poetry by the American author Henry Longfellow who had visited Scarborough many years before, Grimeshaw read a poem about Scarborough Castle and one verse inspired him
‘Hast thou seen that Lordy castle
    That castle by the sea
    Golden and red above it
    The clouds float gorgeously”
Grimeshaw loved the poem and changed the name of the lodge to The Castle by the Sea.

The Grimshaw collection was great. I loved the restoration video and thought that the provision of comfy chairs within the gallery, to sit and admire the paintings, was a really nice touch. I also enjoyed the sand exhibition. It allowed the observer to appreciate just how huge a part it plays in our lives. A very nicely balanced mix of old and modern themes. I enjoyed it very much.

Well done Andrew. I'm a Scarborough lad and know the 3 buildings well but it's still great to see them as always changing.
Many moons ago Woodend housed a collection of original books by the Sitwell's. I believe that the room you interviewed the other Andrew in was originally the library.
Back in the 60's 70's etc Woodend was the Natural History Museum and I recall a school trip when we were taken into the cellars, there seemed to be as many specimens down there as upstairs but the one I remember most was a large bear. Scared the life out of me.
Scarborough became known as the first seaside resort following the discovery of a spring where the Spa now stands. The dubious water was supposed to have health benefits and attracted the Victorian Gentry. I believe that the original baths are still beneath the small ' roundabout' just ln front of the first shop on the Spa. ( The original site of the spring is halfway down steps leading to the beach)I recall seeing photos of the tiled interior several yrs ago.
If you have any contacts at SBC may be worth asking if you can go down.

Really interesting tour of 3 fantastic cultural venues. The Grimshaw display is stunning. Like you, I'm a huge admirer. I found Emma Gibson's 'Quicksand' project extremely interesting, as well as the ambitious plans to make the museums and galleries more accessible. Thank you!

Brilliantly produced as always. Thanks to this video I now know what I missed in my younger days when a visit to Scarborough (which was an annual event) began and ended with the beaches and amusements. I have lived in exile in Worcestershire for the last 44 years but I am certainly planning a return - thanks to your excellent videos.

They've really turned into into some kind of leftist social project and it's just confusing imo. They could spread Scarborough's hugely impressive palaeontological, natural and folk history (including its surrounding areas eg, Flixton, Star Carr, Flamborough, etc) into there. Rather than it being crammed into the Rotunda, which is fabulous but limited on space, and subject to noisy school parties on theme days. The Woodend will of course argue they are providing community outreach and art and craft facilities. And I'm but a mere visitor. But it seems like a missed opportunity to showcase 'Scarborough,' which I would have thought was of far more interest to incoming tourists than a bunch of student artists making chicken wire circles, etc.

I visited in June and loved the Rotunda and the art gallery but the Woodend was totally baffling. Was told 'everything's on one floor' but most rooms were locked, or led to some kind of upstairs social project, which was off limits to visitors. It wasn't clearly signposted and there was nowhere to go (apart from a library) but the very nice cafe, where you interview the gentleman for your piece. It was the strangest and most pointless experience. But the cafe was of course lovely. There was just little 'accessible' for a casual visitor except for an unfinished fish installion which even then was locked in a large glass room. It was as if it was trying hard to be too many things, but came across (to me at least) as too highbrow for its own good. I'd imagine many local folk find it a headscratcher tbh.
