    About MMO cheating: there is a permadeath mmo on roblox called "deepwoken" that got a big popularity spike due to being an actually really well made game that stood out there. Not only that, it's a sequel to a similar older permadeath mmo called "rogue lineage" (died due to way more cheaters, and corrupt mod staff.) People would crash servers just to dupe 1 item, noclip-fly, and if you say something like "clipped" or "Caught you cheating lol", they would target you with gangs pretending their best to play legit so they can get away with killing you over and over, then mock you. It doesn't help that i used to be a cheater in this game too. It got to the point where cheaters got mad against other cheaters.

  • @Infindox
    @Infindox 2 роки тому +87

    This one is actually... Really creepy. Considering how other mmos can be very entertaining to get attached to your character (especially XIV which is more story driven), I'd be heartbroken if something like that could happen.

    Similar to this old early CG show I used to watch called 'Reboot.' The show was all about how life for 'Sprites' was inside a computer and 'User' video games dropped in as big purple cubes. Any Sprites caught in the cube had to play against the User and if the User won the game, the Sprites got Nullified, which meant they lost their Sprite forms and turned into these little slug things called 'Nuls'
    God I loved that show!

    NOL was the worst! It only ever happened to me on v.1 of the Dreamcast version, but it was absolutely ghastly to just have someone blast away my character. I learned later that you can avoid getting NOL'd by taking out the VMU right after it happened so the game never had a chance to save, but you'd still lose anything in your inventory that wasn't equipped by doing that so it wasn't always ideal.
    Though your mention of weird cult-likeness of all the NOLs reminds me that back when I played there were a heckuva lot of green HUmars named Lavis for some reason. That character isn't an NPC so I dunno if any code would do that, but it was a similar experience of seeing multiple Lavis's just hanging out sometimes.

    I would like to argue that I agree with the Golden rule only regarding multiplayer games *with stakes or serious competition*. If I’m playing casually with a group of friends, let’s bring in Double Dash for example, I would dust off my old Action Replay and put codes in just to mess with them. When they figure it out (which is gonna be quick, mind you! I’ll be going 400cc in the first race), we either reset to vanilla or continue messing with codes for everyone. Game breaking codes are fun for all situations as long as the game isn’t meant to be taken seriously.

    Oh gawd, just remembered the Frozen Screen of DEATH where it corrupts your saves! It's one of the reasons the Gamecube port was notorious as well as how pirates managed to rip gamecube discs from the system. It's why if you want a good multiplayer experience with PSO, play the PSO:BB private servers since most of your saves are on the server side. Just beware that Episode 4 breaks the game's balance. But the FSOD is another spooky thing in PSOGC.
    The falzspawns can be another topic is since relates to body-horror, but sadly they been fallen to modern terms of technophobia thanks to games like Metroid Dread and Breath of the Wild. To me, the DOLLS are not scary in NGS since it's just not a phobia I personally don't relate to. In PSO1 and Classic PSO2, The falzspawns were more like the monsters in Evil Dead-ish space bugs where their D-cells processes their victims. Dark Force was the sources of this cancer-like darkness where its divided itself and spread around to the body that is the galaxy via their avatars. One of their nests was actually a destroyed Pioneer ship filled with blood of their victims that is very poisonous to the touch . It shows how deadly the Falzspawns can be if left unchallenged. I get Sega is trying something different, but chasing trends is just not the way.

    • @VulpesHilarianus
      @VulpesHilarianus 2 роки тому

      They carried some of that theme of body horror and loss of self over into Phantasy Star Universe and it's two spinoff series. The SEED honestly are scary in-universe. They can just drop out of space wherever they feel like, take over the local wildlife, and propagate like mad. Even crazier is they can bring back the dead with all their memories intact, so you never know who is a monster. When you see the size of some of the creatures they corrupt and use as breeding hosts you realize how screwed the GUARDIANS are.

    Awesome to hear that you got to experience PSO on Dreamcast online around the time it was around, no console re-releases or private servers...
    ...but REALLY sucks to hear that something like that happened to you and even was a rampant issue in the game; don't know if this was ever documented by someone else but can't imagine sinking so many hours into an MMO (I actually did that for quite a bit in two PSO Blue Burst private servers years ago) only to see my character wiped, turned into an NPC, and then see everybody else falling victim to the exact same curse.

    If it's to gain an unfair advantage over other online players, or do something like in the video, or just be that asshole who likes to ruin other players' experience, then no, don't do it.
    But if it's to, say, get a little bit of help for a particularly frustrating boss or level in a one player game, or if you and a few friends just want to screw around together and see what the game is actually capable of?
    Then I think it'd be okay.

    Challenge mode was the best part of the game anyways. You played each part of the game starting from a fixed level and fixed gear. Basically a roguelike with no meta progress. Except there were 14 different levels (9 for episode 1 and 5 for episode 2), each one getting progressively more difficult but with better starting level/gear. Each level took about an hour to complete.
    You lived off the land always hoping the next drop was a broken weapon/armor or a sorely-needed consumable, and the faster you completed each stage the better the "main game" reward at the end (I always just gave them away, content to play more challenge mode with different classes/playgroups)
    The main game had door camping, which was kind of annoying/slow if you were underleveled, but in c-mode it made for a cool strategic decision, because no matter how bad or unlucky you were you could always slog through. It would just be slow. To get the fastest times you had to take risks.
    When you died in challenge mode, you left a little grave with the last thing you said written on it. You could see the graves of the other players you were with. One said "screw this I'm going in" kek.

    Well, if it can be done with cheat devices, it can likely also be undone with cheat devices though you'd need to rebuild your data, which would mean keeping track of your character.
    Having never played this game, just how much of your character is lost in this process? Is it just your visual appearance, or do stats/inventory also get wiped/reset? Is anything maintained? And more importantly, is there any actual legit ingame place where you are temporarially made to control an NPC? If not, I'd have to wonder why this kind of code would exist in the first place, from a programming standpoint.
    EDIT: Did some nosing around and found that it indeed does replace EVERYTHING. However, because PSO doesn't use server-side saves (everything about your progress is stored locally on your VMU (at least in the DC version)), one could actually if you pulled it out or powered off the console in time, stop this from overwriting your data. In theory if you had a way to back up VMU data, this could be further protection from the hack though I don't know if there was at the time a way to easily do that.

    So this happened long before cheating became a thing in Destiny 2. Wow!
    Lemme tell ya, Git, there was an awful lot of cheating in Destiny 2, especially when it became to PVP in general and in Trials of Osiris. There were a number of gamers that could use cheating mods to give them incredible range with their weapons, clip through obstacles, zip by the battlefield like you're Flash, get power ammo out of the blue....
    There were even people that created cheating programs for Destiny 2 and other games so that people could pay them and get ahead in the PVP aspect of the game. Bungie thankfully caught onto this and developed an anti-cheat method with the help of another company to set things up, find cheaters and ban them for life from the game. It has had its stones and thorns at the beginning, but it's getting along pretty well so far. Why, there were even two of the biggest providers of the cheat mods hit hard with the ban hammer AND a lawsuit to pay for damages done through cheating.
    Cheaters never and shouldn't ever prosper.
