    Bridges are always more challenging than we thought. Roy, you are brave. I love the lift up. I remember the "Lady Lionel." So funny. Reversing loops make my head spin. Can't wait for the running trains next week. See ya Tuesday.

      Thanks, Norman. The whole project just seems to be falling in place. But the real test comes when I reinstall the track and try to run trains across the lift-up. Hopefully, all will go well. We will soon see. ...Roy

    Roy, the lift bridge is looking good so far. I see you left your engine display in place and attached the hinges to it. I think that works good. The 15 degree crossover is a good and easy solution to your wiring situation. Real men do use pink foam, I love it, it works great for me. Watch that back, I know all too well how it feels to have to bend down and crawl under. Have a great day and look forward to the next shows.

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  5 років тому +1

      Thanks, Rob. I'm really pleased by the way the whole thing just seems to be falling together. For now at least, I'm leaving the engine display case where it is, because as it turns out, I can reach the locomotives on it easily, whether the lift-up is down or up. I can't tell you how many times I've banged my back while ducking under. So it's wonderful the have the lift-up in place and functioning well. I really love the pink foam, too. ...Roy

    I understand all about life getting in the way of fun, Roy. Story of my life for years! LOL And, I'd love to use pink foam as well, but, I only have a small car and it's hard to find a sheet that will fit in the trunk!

      You might consider bringing (or buying) a large utility knife with you to the store and cutting the full size sheet to fit into your car. As I recall I did that when I bought some of the blue stuff (2" thick).

    another great show roy i just love seeing and listening to you talk about your layout. you are making great progress there i see. cant wait to see it completed. just one question though is there going to be any structures on the lift up bridge?? i use a lot of the pink and blue foam also and it paints really nice. if you want to secure the ground cover paint it heavily and put your ground cover right in the thick wet paint. it helps to then bang it off on news paper to get all of the loose stuff off and then you can use hair spray to secure more to it if you want. just thought i would give you that little tip so it dose not snow ground cover on you when you lift it up to come into the room. ha ha !!!!!

  • @dirtthunder1638
    @dirtthunder1638 5 років тому

    They sale pink foam in the US at Home Depot and blue is sold at Lowe's. Both work well for scenery but I wouldn't recommend it for a base for section or flex track. It tends to get waves up and down in the track. But it does great with track that has built in read bed like Kato.

    Thanks for the polarity explanation with the crossover - makes total sense. I also think the lift-up to the side is very smart as the throw (if that’s the correct word) will be much shorter when lifting. One question: For westbounds through Green River into Evanston heading for Portland, what is the path they will take? It looks like they would route back onto the main layout but I might be seeing that wrong.

    • @gottawatch

    Roy, I'm becoming confused by this new track plan. Perhaps you could show us with highlighted colors the routes you have planned. Currently, it appears to me a train on what has been the eastbound main through Green River is now the continuous route. The only escape it to use the double crossover in front of the propane dealer and take the inner track into the inner track of the helix under White Moutain. Further, isn't such a route creating one of your feared reverse loops? But then, I'm just confused.

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  5 років тому

      I hear you, Jerry, and I understand completely. I've felt that same kind of confusion sometimes when visiting clubs and I couldn't decipher the clubs' track plans. Yes, absolutely, I can show you the planned routes, and highlighted colors would indeed by a good way to do that. Hopefully, I will have the track installed on my lift-up bridge before next Saturday's episode. Then I can run some trains, and I think that would be the perfect time to talk about routes, including origins and destinations. Hopefully, that will help clear up any confusion. I suspect that others are feeling it, too. ...Roy

    • @jerrysmith1929

      Thanks, Roy, to me it is looking as if there is a reverse loop hidden in the lower staging tracks.

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  5 років тому

      No polarity problems there, Jack. At least not yet. The staging yard tracks are run-through, with no reversing loops. However, when the tracks descend the helices, the polarity of the track that was on the front rail on the upper level ends up being on the back rail in the staging yard. We'll see what happens when I re-install the track and try to run trains across the lift-up. ...Roy

    Hello Roy. Can you go into more detail concerning the 15 degree crossover and its relationship too wiring-polarity-switches. It appears to me that you simply put it in. Place and go about your business of attaching it too the connecting rails with metal rail joiners and that is it. No fancy wiring etc. is it that simple or is this newbie all confused. And if it is as simple as I stated then why on earth would anyone wNt to go in any other direction. With scenic-king etc it will look awesome and the trains crossing over will look cool
    Difficult or not difficult to hook up I still think it is a nice feature

      michael dunn I’m a wee bit confused as how it is fixing anything polarity wise also.
      I can only assume track A and B on one side are opposite polarity to each other, and C and D the same to each other, so the crossover matches a and c which happen to be same polarity, and b and d which are also same polarity. This would not be the case on most layouts, because usually you’d wire the adjoining tracks same polarity, but is for Roy.

      Absolutely, Michael. I can and will discuss it further. I hope to reinstall the track on the lift-up in time for next Saturday's video. If all goes well, we should then be able to watch trains crossing the lift-up. I'd like to talk a little more about the various routes than trains can take, including their origins and destinations. ...Roy

      Thanks, Monorails. It amazing how reversed polarity can sneak into a track plan. You've guessed correctly about the polarity in the tracks, but I do need to discuss that issue further in next week's video, when I should be able to run trains across the lift-up. ...Roy

    Interesting! I don't think that we can get pink polystyrene foam here in the UK as I've never seen any offered for sale. May be someone reading this will put me right?

      10mm pink is common -mostly blue here in the UK tho -a well as white ! Does it really matter -the colour that is ??

      Kettenhund, is extruded foam available there in other colors? Blue or yellow perhaps? It definitely doesn't exist here in Panama, except on my layout thanks to Steve Brown. ...Roy

      You're right, Neil. Pink may be the most common color, but sometimes you can find it in other colors, such as blue or yellow. I don't think the color makes any difference. ...Roy

      Have a look among the insulatin section at B&Q (or your favourite DIY store)! I've used 25cm kingspan or similar on the railroad as was as insulating the railroad room (otherwise known as the shed).

    Not using the ar1 is a good choice mainly because they are not reliable. I have used reversers from dcc specialties and recommend. If you change your mind and want a reliable reverser. Otherwise what you have so far looks great.

    Hi Roy, I like your design for the lift out bridge. I'm thinking of incorporating it into my layout. The only question I have is what are you doing to ensure electrical current when you replace the bridge? And, will you be putting scenery and terrain on the bridge?

    • @WhatAboutTheBee
      @WhatAboutTheBee 5 років тому

      A simple service loop of cable will bring electric service to the bridge

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  5 років тому

      Thanks, my friend. It was a little difficult to decide what kind of bridge to build and how to hinge it. But I'm happy because it seems to be turning out well. In response to your questions, I may put drop feeders on the bridge itself later on, but for now, but Kato track carries current so well that tracks adjacent to the lift-up will bring current to the tracks on the lift-up just by connecting them. I plan to make the track connections with Kato expansion tracks. As for scenery, it will have to be low, so that it doesn't hit the locomotive storage shelves when the bridge is in the up-position. ...Roy

    how much linear feet on your layout...to descent/ascend between upper and lower levels?

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  5 років тому

      That's a good question, jonnken. I've never measured linear feet of track on my layout. The only thing I can say at this point is: the layout room measures 10 feet by 12 feet, and the vertical clearance between the two levels is 8 inches. ...Roy

    I have a wye on my layout and absolutely refuse to use a Digitrax AR-1 as they are electro-mechanical devices and subject to failure more frequently than a solid state device. While I do like their prices, I chose to go ahead and spend double the amount and buy the PSX-AR. It is a solid state device and I have rarely heard of it failing like I have heard about the AR-1.

    I think the complexity of the dual switches is too uh ... complex. In this case I think the crossovers is absolutely the way to go. As usual I forgot about the polarity thing.....

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  5 років тому

      I hear you, Bill. Too much complexity is something to avoid, because it lead to hard-to-find problems. Hopefully, I will have the track re-installed and trains running across the lift-up bridge in next weeks video. Then we will see if reversed polarity or other issues have sneaked into my track plan. ...Roy
