I'm a beginner luthier and I've learned some stuff so far but I'm practicing my art and wanted to know if you have tips or would in the future work together.
I remember all those 80’s Cort guitars from the Sears Catalogue when I was a kid. I was in an isolated town and poor so that was what I had access too. I traveled a few hours to another town to get a Kramer Striker 600 and then after a little while I went over 8 hours to get a Strat Plus, different times growing up in Northern Canada
Way back in the day I got one out of a Sears surplus dumpster that shut down. It had the knockoff Kahler trem called Accutune. My main guitar for a few years because of the tremolo
I had that exact guitar, along with a les Paul copy and a les Paul effector all from Sears, hey when you're a 16 year old stoner you don't have a lot of money Sears was you're go to guitar supplier
But you probably really appreciated what you got. I was just poor and only had one of these crazy Explorers from Sears. I bought a DOD American Metal Pedal and it actually sounded good. I sanded it and repainted it, to get rid of the effects look. Later I was able to buy a Kramer, then a Fender Tele.
I have this exact effector guitar. I put in Reverend pickups, took out the effects (they had practically died) and put in a normal 3-way toggle, in place of the Speed knob. It actually sounds really good, and plays well.
The classic JEMs were all into neon colors, any bright color would pay homage to the original vibe of these guitars. It's a bit saddening to see how guitar colors have progressively become more boring, ahah
I just got a Starfield Altair SJ custom. Look it up. :-) I also have the terror twins, a pair of, made in Fujugen, AX7521 7 string demolition machines...$200 bucks each lol and they play like a wet dream you didn't think you had in you and grunt like a hog you've never seen.
fortunately Gator makes a 2-up case that is actually pretty stout. Every one stares when I hit the zipper...what. is. that? Yep. and it's got Hoshino's bootprints all over it...ha ha ha.
@@russellzauner Looked it up. Pretty cool looking guitar, it's like an ibanezy, les pauly type thing with strat pickups. Its crazy all the guitars that come out of that factory that you've never heard of. I wish I could get into the AX series; but I really, really dislike the body style :( I would also recommend checking out another Japanese brand - Caparison guitars. I bought a Horus recently and there are some things about it that are nicer than my JEM.
That Cort looks like it was put together pretty well. And it's in good condition 30-ish years later. I have an old Cort sitting in my collection as well. Thanks for the history lesson Professor Trogly.
I have a unbranded Les Paul copy with the Cort effector electronics. It’s literally the same. The pickups are 3 wire, never seen that. I picked mine up as a wiring project. I also have a very early Electra hollow body with a very Gibson-ish headstock.
I had a white Effector Explorer that was picked up at a yard sale. Sadly, the effects were ripped out by the previous owner and they just put a long rectangular piece of plastic over the control buttons that were taken off. I wound up selling it on ebay years ago. Never thought I'd see another one again, but thanks to this channel, I finally got to see what the effect controls actually looked like.
I actually like the speedy unboxing. You should do that and go straight to opening the case for regular paced footage and then do ur regular thing with the guitar. Its a small mix up but keeps the evolution of ur content moving. :)
Had one just like that in my early teens. Paid $150 for it in 86-87 I believe. Never gave me any issues. Loved it. I didn't use the built-in distortion , I had a Rat pro co distortion pedal and an old 70s fender amp.
Well, ACTUALLY, there's am emg power supply for those sort of things! It's simple - emges use sterei 6.5jack, and the power supply can power your pickups via stereo cable, while being just another ped on a pedalboard. Look it up, it's a really cool concept!
That Cort reminds me of the Hohner 'EX Devil' a bandmate once had, around '88; Plywood body, strat-style trem, neck-tilt screw and the same kind of tuners. Probably made in the same factory.
I like Electra guitars personally. I have a slightly beat up Phoenix (no Westone on the headstock) in the metallic bronze color they did a a few models in. It has its original single coils in the neck and middle, but the bridge humbucker was replaced with a pink SD JB. I got it for literally next to nothing at a pawn shop I frequently went to in college that always had interesting gear. Got an older Morley Wah that is still on my pedal board today at that shop SUPER cheap too.
In the early 80s, I lusted after these in the Sears catalog. Built-in effects! What more could one ask for? [at the time, I had no idea that amps created distortion. I plugged my Zenon gold-foil pickup guitar into our home stereo, and was greatly disapointed. $50 it cost me]
My brother's first electric was an Effector! Unfortunately, he had to throw it away since the fretboard had screws coming out, and other things too. I had time to take the pickups and knobs before we threw it away. The bridge pickup was my first ever humbucker, and was my first ever mod done to a guitar!
The Cort Effector was my very 1st electric guitar 26 years ago . The person that gave it to me ( for free ) had chopped off both the front horn and a large section of the back of the guitar and spray painted and electric taped it to look like EVH's guitar , just way more hideous looking lol . The only effects that still worked were the distortion and I think the chorus but it was mine and I loved it .
And nice coincidence, I was watching a video about the Ibanez JEM line on the 'Five Watt World' channel only the other day. And I once had worked for a 2nd-hand chain, and we were being ripped off by someone selling us a 'Chibanez' JEM as the real deal; That thing ended up in the bin.
I got a Jem Jr a few years back and I really liked it, until someone pointed out the neck was twisted (thus providing a big answer on why I couldn't get it set up right when i was first learning all that stuff). I was able to return it to Guitar Center and I do miss it. I loved having a white guitar and getting a real Gem is one of my guitar goals.
I have had this guitar since 1990. It needs help now, but I used it for years. As a beginner guitar it was perfect. I got some distortion pedals and used it with the effects and it sounded intresting.
The first image I got when you unpacked the Effector Explorer was an image of Phil Collen playing such a guitar with Def Leppard, not knowing whether he really did or not. When you mentioned needing the battery to generate the effects, the first thing that popped in my brain was the power pack needed to access the guitar modeling features on the Line 6 Variax series. I've got a friend that has a Steinberger Synapse model with active electronics. He talks about how the battery drains itself just being left in its socket. My advice to him when I saw this particular model last year was that he should remove the battery until the next time he picks up that guitar, which is probably twice a year.
Late to the party, but I believe your 18th fret was soldered as a repair. It can work as a cheap fix but hardly ever done correctly. The layers of wood *might be* rough router marks if I'm not mistaken. Awesome to see one of these broken down.
Would love to see a steinberger headless guitar on the channel sometime in the future, the full body ones though, as played by bratta or dharma. Currently I'm really into those progressive shapes, but hesitant to buy a harley benton version to try out as they lack a tremolo unit.
Being a teen in the 80s I remember owning a CORTEZ Les Paul, identical to Randy Rhoads' Lp. It still ran me $275. Back in 1984. I wish I still owned it, although the thing could not stay in tune. And Japan guitars were snubbed at back then, now they are sought after by players because they were made really good.
Yes, please do a review on the Ibanez Pia. I have owned and currently own several JEM's including the Indonesia made JEM 7VP which is actually, quality-wise, pretty damn nice. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of reviews on the JEM 7VP and I myself like the Indonesia made JEM. Usually, the other Indonesia made Ibanez guitar have the cheap TRS-101 tremolos or the Ibanez Edge Zero tremolos. Where as the JEM 7VP has the highly sought after Ibanez Edge original tremolo and DiMarzio Evolution pick ups. Of course, you would need a MIJ JEM to compare parts and quality, but I'm sure you have connections. Thanks for the great videos!
Was thinking either yellow or green PIA. Only ever had but one issue with any Ibanez expensive or cheap. It was a bass my son had. The jack kept getting loose and him fiddling with it incorrectly messed up some of the wires. Now cort on the other hand. Everyone I've come across had either issues with tuning or the tail bridge if not both plus they sounded cheap. Wasn't just the amp.
That nice big battery cavity on the Cort could be a great opportunity to retrofit it with li-ion batteries or something. Would be a cool project for someone I'm sure.
It's really kool you got a hold of that explorer,I owned one for about 12 hours, made a trade back in the day,and dudes mom flipped, had to give it back. I was pissed, but looking back, it was about the look,I don't think it even stayed in tune
Yes! Please review the new PIA guitars! From what i have heared those guitars are quite different from Steve Vai's JEM guitars. For one it has a thicker neck! And do the green one! I think the pink is more niche-y kind of color.
These were the cream of the crop available from Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogues way back in the stone age before the internet 😃 if you were 14, had little money, and knew nothing about 'real' guitars... you wanted one of these. ( i only remember seeing the les paul copy) but hey im glad to see theres some quality involved, cort was a common outsource builder, and it's survived! Thx for showing
Had one of these many, many years ago. I believe it was about $175 out of the JC Penny catalog. Could never keep it in tune no matter what I did but sounded ok while it was in tune.
wow .i got a white explorer from Sears surplus store back in like 1982 for $20.00 . same exact effects. says effector on the headstock. the body is made of plywood .lol
That Effector is EXACTLY the guitar that made me want to play. It was in the 1984 Sears catalog. The black body with those Dimarzio looking pickups was so hot. I begged my parents for it for my 14th birthday. Unfortunately the guy at some local music store gave them the old "go cheap first and see if he's serious" route. I ended up with a Harmony sunburst crapcaster which I absolutely loathed (along with a horrid Gorilla 10 watt amp). It discouraged me so much I quit for 25 years. Got back into it in my 40s. I would LOVE to have and play the guitar I dreamed about for a whole year.
I had that same model, and yep ordered it from the Sears catalog lol. But I saved up from my high school job. No way my parents were gonna buy it. I loved it, except it would go out of tune just by looking at it. I didn't know anything about adjusting or working on guitars then, so it was pretty frustrating.
Austin, I listed my Dean USA Soltero two days ago on Reverb. Tangerine Burst with matching head stock. I was told it was a Custom Shop model when i bought it from a Music Store in Miami Ten years ago. It is in PERFECT condition, No breaks, No scratches, NO Back Rash, No dings. It is perfect! I will give you a good deal on it. It has Jim Wagner Pickups, the best Pickups available Ten years ago. An Iron Man in Bridge and Darkburst Neck. They are so awesome! It is Please check it out and see if you might be interested. It is definitely as good as any Les Paul i have ever owned and Better than most. Thanks!
You could take that thng, pull all that circuit crap out, put in decent pots, decent pickups (nothing crazy), and put in led lights where all the push buttons were and have a fun stage guitar. The 9 volts should run LED's for quite a while
Wow it's neat to see the cort, that was my first electric guitar back in the 80s, I got it used and it was black like that. The fretboard was some kind of plastic? It eventually broke.
More a classic guitar person, but the Gem Jr. is pretty unusual by itself. I bet you will like playing it. It could be worthy of more time. Those PIA guitars are horrendous!! Horrendously interesting! Maybe a sound comparison between a PIA and the Gem Jr.?
Love how you threw in the Metallica licks. Right on man. I’ve got an extra 500 bucks and I’ve always wanted a Epiphone les Paul. If you got one I’d love to buy it from you
I bought 70's & 80's japanese basses for around $50-100 fixed em up, sold em for $300-400. I had a great time with them, some of em were quite good actually & even I made some profit. Why not.
You would absolutely have to go with the pink. Every Guitar UA-camr is talking about that particular model. That should be the most desirable one I think, even if only in terms of UA-cam views.
If you’re gonna review a PIA, which you definitely should, do green, it goes well with the gold pickups and Steve Vai’s personal PIA is also green. Also review the JEM Jr, please
Jem jr are great, still quite high end. It’s sister satriani guitars are the same, I actually have a recently vintage js100 and I’d never trade it.. ever..

The PIA would be hype, please do the gold because it looks sexy as fuck
I've asked a couple of times. How do the dragons come into play with your logo?
Check to see if the pots are push/pull.
Definitely the green Pia!
Trogly when r u gonna be guest on "The Live Wires" podcast?
I'm a beginner luthier and I've learned some stuff so far but I'm practicing my art and wanted to know if you have tips or would in the future work together.
100% do a PIA. The non-white ones are the limited editions.
Saw the same catalog! That black Effector Explorer made me want to play. Never got it though.
Way back in the day I got one out of a Sears surplus dumpster that shut down. It had the knockoff Kahler trem called Accutune. My main guitar for a few years because of the tremolo

I had two of them. I still have one.
GOLD PIA 100%
I mean, c'mon, it's already got metallic accents on the damn thing...STEAMPUNK! A distressed pewter would be even more ballsy...
New trade idea, start with a customshop and trade down to a $30 guitar
shortest series ever
I have this exact effector guitar. I put in Reverend pickups, took out the effects (they had practically died) and put in a normal 3-way toggle, in place of the Speed knob. It actually sounds really good, and plays well.
Yesss get a pia, do the pink
@Matt Wongkondee yes pink!
Ditto
Yeah, definitely pink - I _hate_ green guitars.
The classic JEMs were all into neon colors, any bright color would pay homage to the original vibe of these guitars. It's a bit saddening to see how guitar colors have progressively become more boring, ahah
Yes pls pink
Sleep? Or watch Trogly?
Well, you know what I picked.
it can be two things
Austin YES PLEASE do a PIA!!!! The craftsmanship of a REAL Fujigen-made Ibanez will absolutely blow your mind.
I just got a Starfield Altair SJ custom. Look it up. :-)
I also have the terror twins, a pair of, made in Fujugen, AX7521 7 string demolition machines...$200 bucks each lol and they play like a wet dream you didn't think you had in you and grunt like a hog you've never seen.

Trade Tuesday is my favourite video series from you!
At 3:20- I used to work for Mars music. If the Cort were my guitar, I would replace the pickups and caps and put in a 3 way pickup selector switch.
Mars music was awesome! It was everything that guitar center should’ve been.
Pretty cool, before seeing battery insert on back was like “gotta be active wiring”
I have a unbranded Les Paul copy with the Cort effector electronics. It’s literally the same. The pickups are 3 wire, never seen that. I picked mine up as a wiring project. I also have a very early Electra hollow body with a very Gibson-ish headstock.
Pia in pink. Steve vai crazy colors. Would love to see it. Anderton's said the neck was thicker than a Jem, I'd be interested to find out.
The pia in green is beautiful
Trogly I’d love to see some vintage fenders in your channel hopefully one day you’ll consider buying one!
We can always hope for a Fullerton AVRI or even a pre CBS...
He has done a 70's walnut strat

I really wanna see you review more Ibanez.

Thanks for the hard work videos love them cant wait to see the next 1
You gotta review the PIA. Really interested in seeing a breakdown of that guitar.

The Jem has nice, sharp cuts to the body. I dig it! Good job Trog 👍
love trade Tuesday!
I had a Electra 3/4 size bass and it was awesome playing and sounding. thanks Trogly, I am a big fan :)
I have had this guitar since 1990. It needs help now, but I used it for years. As a beginner guitar it was perfect. I got some distortion pedals and used it with the effects and it sounded intresting.
Sears sold that Cort effector for $169 dollars in either 86 or 87.
Thanks for the vlog, best of luck moving that guitar on.
The first image I got when you unpacked the Effector Explorer was an image of Phil Collen playing such a guitar with Def Leppard, not knowing whether he really did or not. When you mentioned needing the battery to generate the effects, the first thing that popped in my brain was the power pack needed to access the guitar modeling features on the Line 6 Variax series.

hondo made explorer copies with crazy fineshes. they had strat trems
Best part is they go for less than 500 most times
Late to the party, but I believe your 18th fret was soldered as a repair. It can work as a cheap fix but hardly ever done correctly. The layers of wood *might be* rough router marks if I'm not mistaken. Awesome to see one of these broken down.
Cort- fully built in S. Korea at the time. Worth $150 like the one you got. Unique.
I’d love to see the PIA reviewed, the green is a great looking color for it
Excellent video and nice playing. This guitar sounded pretty cool and I like the concept behind it.
Would love to see a steinberger headless guitar on the channel sometime in the future, the full body ones though, as played by bratta or dharma. Currently I'm really into those progressive shapes, but hesitant to buy a harley benton version to try out as they lack a tremolo unit.
I have an old Epiphone Ex I just love. I've been learning amp repair. If I had the Cort I would be dumb enough to try fixing the circuitry!
My first guitar back in the 80's was a Cort Effector in white. Probably paid around $100 for it.
I see 'em now selling for around $700. 😆
Yes, please do a review on the Ibanez Pia. I have owned and currently own several JEM's including the Indonesia made JEM 7VP which is actually, quality-wise, pretty damn nice. Love the effector. Friend had one about 15 years ago. Always wanted to find another one just for nostalgic

That nice big battery cavity on the Cort could be a great opportunity to retrofit it with li-ion batteries or something. Would be a cool project for someone I'm sure.
One of my band mates used to have a Cort Effector back in the late 90s. From what I remember it was a pretty solid guitar play ability wise.
Trogly is in the HOUSE!!!
Don’t know if you read all comments, but would love to see you review a Japanese Tokai :-)
It's really kool you got a hold of that explorer,I owned one for about 12 hours, made a trade back in the day,and dudes mom flipped, had to give it back. I was pissed, but looking back, it was about the look,I don't think it even stayed in tune
That Explorer is cool. I've played a Jem Jr and they are absolutely amazing, especially for the money! I like the PIA is cool.
HELL YEAH for the PIA!!! They look beautiful, I would love to see review of the pink one.
you have great videos man
Oh, hey, check out pink ibanez. I mean, it would look pretty cool and maybe drag a bit more attention if done right.

Love the MARS Music case - I worked at one for the tail end of their run
wow .i got a white explorer from Sears surplus store back in like 1982 for $20.00 . same exact effects. says effector on the headstock. the body is made of plywood .lol
Please look into the Ibanez Pia.
That noise you here when its distorted is not really the pickups being microphonic, it's the springs for the trem ringing when you strum
That Effector is EXACTLY the guitar that made me want to play. It was in the 1984 Sears catalog. The black body with those Dimarzio looking pickups was so hot. That is a sad tale my friend, alas, I wept.
Pink PIA all the way trough!!! It looks quite similar to the Takayoshi Ohmura Pink Stratocaster, nice vid! cheers
Late 80s Sears catalogue guitar. IIRC it was around $229 new when I was in HS.
Nice Metallica at the beginning of the playing demo
Thought I was watching a Agufish video. Need a dog to top it off.
Green or Gold PIA would be my pick. The Cort is a cool, oddball guitar. God bless and rock on 🎸👍😎
You could take that thng, pull all that circuit crap out, put in decent pots, decent pickups (nothing crazy), and put in led lights where all the push buttons were and have a fun stage guitar. The 9 volts should run LED's for quite a while
Day (???) of asking Trogly to review a strandberg
I think he would call it weird and comfortable and thats about it
Buy one and force his hand.
I have to add - you won't be disappointed by full-fat Jem. I absolutely love mine!
Guitar the black one reminds me of the Jetsons cartoon
Wow it's neat to see the cort, that was my first electric guitar back in the 80s, I got it used and it was black like that. The fretboard was some kind of plastic? It eventually broke.
I actually love the Electra guitars, I have a LP style that is one of my favorite guitars I own!
I have love for Electra too. I have my dads late 70s Electra Jazz Bass and I’d confidently put it up against a comparable fender of the time.
Got one of those from SEARS back in the 80's. Traded it for two Stadium speakers. Looking for another one
Honestly the gold PIA is my favorite except for the white
Yes yes yes on the Vai....GREEN!!!
If you got one I’d love to buy it from you
Green is my favorite color green is always my number one pick blue then black
I bought 70's & 80's japanese basses for around $50-100 fixed em up, sold em for $300-400. I had a great time with them, some of em were quite good actually & even I made some profit. Why not.
There was a cort explorer for sale locally about 2 years ago that i tried to snag but wasnt able to get ahold of the seller. Looked exactly the same
I love the green one
Do the PIA . The green one looks amazing. Would be a very good video since you go more in depth .
¡WE WANT PIA!
Yeah bring the PIA Austin! 🤘
Jem jr are great, still quite high end. It’s sister satriani guitars are the same, I actually have a recently vintage js100 and I’d never trade it.. ever..
Unless it was to a known musician looking for a real player
Pia in green!
