  • We're getting ready to swap the motor out in our 1953 Chevy pickup, so this seemed like the opportune time to finally buy the rolling gantry crane that we've been eyeing up for years. Depending on the size of your garage, and the projects that you're going to take on, it may not be the most practical purchase, but it will definitely make some of our work a whole lot easier (and more fun).
After waiting a few months for this special order item to arrive (they don't tell you that until you're ready to buy it, just to find out they usually don't stock them in the stores!), I headed to HF and had them load this into my truck. Once home, I opened the coffin and slowly moved each piece into the garage. This thing is beefy! I would suggest having a set of helping hands around, even just to unpack it.
The boys and I talk about the build method outlined in the instructions, and then our own thoughts on how to practically build this thing. Our way actually worked out very well.
They boys had fun building it, and rolling around on the wheeled stool, and they are now looking forward to the real work in pulling the old small block out of the chevy. Stay tuned for that video as we're putting in a 400hp Blueprint Engine 350!
Some notes on the gantry crane:
    1. 1 Ton capacity
    2. Does not come with trolley or hoist
    3. Has steel casters that allow for it to be moved around while under weight.
    4. Lowest height under load is 8'3", but it will go down to around 8' 1-1/4" for moving purposes.
    5. Adjusts from 99-1/2 in. to 148 in. high to provide a sturdy overhead lift point to lift car engines, heavy machinery or equipment.
    6. Crank handles allow for easy lifting and lowering
    7. Adjustable I-beam with nine positive stops
    8. 94 in. distance between posts
    9. 5 in. ball bearing casters, two locking casters

Best part of this Video for me is seeing a Father and his Boys working together. Good Dad. Thanks

Thanks a lot for the idea to mount it with the triangle trick.
That was very smart, clever and much safer!

So awesome thank you for sharing. But it’s funny because you were explaining why you got it. Lol. Sounded like one of those things that goes something like honey I got it because. Lol. So cool. Thanks for sharing. I’m getting ready to build one of those in my shop.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I was wondering what the height after assembly was!

Looks like you need to buy another rolling stool, two more if you want to use one yourself.
When they move out and head to college they can take them with them. Or better yet build one for each of them

I like your method. How heavy was it when you pick it up?

It wasn't too bad to lift myself. I think it was much easier lifting this way than how they explained, even with two people.

You can’t lift one side at at a time with one person?

The dimensions of the boxes would be very useful to know for planning transportation from the store.

After a year how do you like it?

I think it's great. I did end up shortening the chain as it was way too long. The shorter chain makes it a lot easier to maneuver and work with.
