My parents were married when I was 8 and this was the song I remember. It completely encapsulates what love is. They are 35 plus years strong (I'm a terrible son for not knowing the date)
The first time I met him was at a concert in Wolfville Nova Scotia Canada and when I met him I was so starstruck that I made a fool of myself, but got an autograph. When I talked him again when he performed at the Acadian days in Grand Pre'Nova Scotia Canada he was selling his greatest hits and not only did I not make a fool of myself, but I got an autograph and bought a CD.
Lennie is a hero of mine. I had the idea of sending a message to Quebec that we wanted them to stay. We put 5,000 people into the Metro Centre - wild night! - Lennie's River Run was the most magical event for me.
The first time I ever heard Lennie Gallant was during the Acadian Festival Concert on 'the hill' back in 2002? Amazing - this is one of my favorite songs by Lennie. I have not seen him since, unfortunately!
When I joined the team at CHYR radio in Southwestern Ontario back in '91, I was quickly introduced to The extraordinary Prince Edward Island LEGEND. "Believing in Better" is still one of Canada's greatest releases. Much appreciated Lenny!! Thank you for all your brilliant works.
Definitely one of my favourite videos in the 1990's by a Canadian artist. The instrumentals at the end of the song are sublime. I believe the machines at 2:41 are vacuum harvesting peat moss.
@lennie gallant Fine. In the early 90s, I taped music videos off MuchMusics one-hour-a-week show with country music videos : Outlaws & Heroes. Never got tired of playing this one over and over.
I loved this song the first time I heard it. The first time I seen the video I was shocked as I am from Restigouche; New Mills. The scenes from Campbellton, Belledune and the Acadian coast were pretty cool. I think the cottage room is the Bonaventure here in New Mills but I am not sure. I heard you sing this for your final song at the New Years thing in Halifax and it brought me back.
He came knocking on her window pane He said "Let me in, it's going to rain" They kissed and they watched the storm And they held each other to keep warm They'd just met that day He played guitar near the old cafe She said she liked the Dylan song The one about movin' on All the way to Montreal When it got wet the car would stall He spoke a little high school French She laughed and she said it made no sense They went a little out of the way She had a friend out in Gaspe They slept there, on her hardwood floor And they make love some more Which way does the river run Through this town Which way does the wind blow When the sun goes down Which way does the river run Through this town Which way does the wind blow When the sun goes down Hard to see into the sun When they got back on the 401 Seems every town had a tale to tell And every street had dreams to sell She talked about her history Said she was one quarter Cree Her mother wouldn't let her know But her father said that it was so Which way does the river run Through this town Which way does the wind blow When the sun goes down Which way does the river run Through this town Which way does the wind blow When the sun goes down She said baby it would be the most If we make it out to the western coast We could dive in the ocean there Then just turn around and head back here 'Cause there's no place for you and me But I love this country The gas gauge was getting low When they left Ontario Which way does the river run Through this town Which way does the wind blow When the sun goes down
Brilliant song! Lennie performed this at our unity concert. My only comment is that the performances is too gentlle. The words are powerful and so should the singing of it be powerful. The gentle approach doesn't suit the song in my opinion.
@lennie gallant I'm doing fine. Thanks for asking. When I had the idea for the concert I really felt like Canada was in danger. You captured what was remarkable about Canada. The interplay between you and the lady in the video strikes me as a good metaphor for Canada's situation at the time. What was needed was someone like you to point out the the amazing good fortune we have to be in the same country. We won by 50,000 votes and I ascribe some of that to your positive vision of Canada. Perspective is everything.

SUCH A GREAT SONG, SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING THAT LIGHTFOOT WOULD WRITE.
Met him in concert on the Island. A truly talented artist. I talked to him a little. he was a total gentleman. Love Lennie!
Great to hear him on Jimmy Buffetts final album. Best song on the album!
Love the song.

Absolutely love this video! Would love to see more, especially to songs like "Tonight I Drive You Home" and "The Ringer".
He came knocking on her window pane
He said "Let me in, it's going to rain"
They kissed and they watched the storm
And they held each other to keep warm
They'd just met that day
He played guitar near the old cafe
She said she liked the Dylan song
The one about movin' on
All the way to Montreal
When it got wet the car would stall
He spoke a little high school French
She laughed and she said it made no sense
They went a little out of the way
She had a friend out in Gaspe
They slept there, on her hardwood floor
And they make love some more
Which way does the river run
Through this town
Which way does the wind blow
When the sun goes down
Which way does the river run
Through this town
Which way does the wind blow
When the sun goes down
Hard to see into the sun
When they got back on the 401
Seems every town had a tale to tell
And every street had dreams to sell
She talked about her history
Said she was one quarter Cree
Her mother wouldn't let her know
But her father said that it was so
Which way does the river run
Through this town
Which way does the wind blow
When the sun goes down
Which way does the river run
Through this town
Which way does the wind blow
When the sun goes down
She said baby it would be the most
If we make it out to the western coast
We could dive in the ocean there
Then just turn around and head back here
'Cause there's no place for you and me
But I love this country
The gas gauge was getting low
When they left Ontario
Which way does the river run
Through this town
Which way does the wind blow
When the sun goes down
love it!!
I thought your performance here in Sudbury back in late August was great. As they would say in Quebec, c'est bonne!
BRILLIANT
C
and Embers!
Dear Lennie, which river were you referring to when you composed this song? I have been told it is the East River in New Glasgow. Carol Riley
Montague River? :-)
Fished that river, home for me
Maybe the Montague River? 🙂
Finally
Allô
