Clara Oswald - Clara Who

- “The thing about Clara is she thinks the show is called Clara. She really does. She has no idea she’s number two in the credits, which is why we did that joke in “Death in Heaven.” She’s got a high opinion of herself, not in a conceited way, but in a correct way. She knows she’s extremely clever and capable, and she doesn’t feel like she particularly fits in the world that she lives in. She’s a bit more like the Doctor in the first place. She’s not really very good at living a normal life. The other companions, like most people, like you and me, can be quite good at living normal lives. I’m very happy living my normal life, I’m sure you are too. Going to the shops seems fine for an adventure, but Clara’s not like that.
When I first wrote Clara, I thought, “Oh, this is fun. If the Doctor were a young woman living in contemporary Britain, it’d be a bit like her.” Clever and presentable and funny but also thinking when is something interesting going to happen? The interesting thing between the Doctor and Clara is she can sort of play the same game he does. She can absolutely do that, she’s terribly clever, she’s got a wayward ego.I think for the first time, the Doctor’s traveling with someone who’s a bit of a loony like him, and that’s quite fun.” - Steven Moffat
Honestly, what a wonderful story arc. Right from the very beginning, Clara was just meant to become more and more like the Doctor. In many ways, like the unusual cleverness, kindness, and sense of wonder and adventure, she already was. I tried to show with this video that no matter how much they love each other, and in my opinion, 'in love' with each other, obviously the Doctor and Clara will eventually clash, because they both feel like they need to be the one in charge, they just need to be in control of the situation. This 'egomaniac needy game player' sort of thing.
Then again we also have the Doctor teaching her how to do things like to keep calm during hard situations, like flying the TARDIS, etc. When she's alone, she hears the Doctor's words inside her head. In those moments she really is 'The Magician's Apprentice'!
They still love each other so much though and after a while, after they get so many wins, Clara just starts to feel like she can do whatever the hell she likes, because her and the Doctor somehow 'always fix it'. There comes a time when they can't, and how Clara reacts is utterly heart breaking.
'Why can't I be like you?'
'Be a little proud of me.'
She can't be like him, because she is not immortal like him. She doesn't have the luxury to get away from death multiple times: that's why I put the 11th Doctor's regeneration pose before Clara's death pose: She does the exact same regeneration pose like all the Doctors, arms wide open and stretched, but something is different: She doesn't explode with a magical yellow light. She just falls on the ground.
Jenna....the most beautiful woman on the planet. I miss her...
when you look back on ALL the companions, they have cast some amazing women--but yeah, Jenna........
I miss Karen too 🥺
@@klarao.oswald8986 She's made of legs.
No other companion compared to her. She was the one. She was the impossible girl.
@@DivineDefect I dont quite understand what you mean
I think Clara was the only one who could keep up with the Doctor.

@@tombaker03
No! Clara. She was so much more important to the Doctor. Think of, what he did. He broke every timelord- rule, to save her from death. He didn"t do this for Rose, not for Amy, not for anyone , but he did it for Clara. That says it all. And why? Because, although she was human, she was at eye level with him because of her cleverness, because she understood him and was so much like him.
Ehm... Amy

It's a very significant point for me :) and the fact that she came back to "life"
@@JCFProductions what is the name of the Music Score that you used for your video? I LOVE it! The score could be used for a character in on of the Power Rangers Series. I just love epic music like the you used. It doesn't just have to be used for the Doctor Who Series, any sci-fi Series actually! Awesome video 👍👍👍👍👍🙂
@@JCFProductions That' why, when they began kicking around the idea of the "female Doctor" I thought she (Clara) was the best candidate because of of her really weird background.
Wow...I-
@@1stPCFerret In season 11, the Doctor saved her and then she traveled with the girl at 7:42 , right?
That character was the main (but not only) reason I named my daughter "Oswin." (And she's turning out JUST as witty)
Didymus Kek that’s so cool!
Waaa I need to meet ur daughter 😂😂

Clara Oswald is actually an amazing example of great character development... Not many people can see that tho
this is fucking BRILLIANT! I never thought of Clara this way. When she went off with ashildr I thought it was great that she sort of became the new Doctor and the fandom could joke around by saying Clara who. But all along I should've seen that she was becoming the Doctor. she was growing to be just like him and when she became too much she had to break away and build her own life of adventures. And I can't believe they built up to that, arguably from the very start. so throughout what, 3 seasons? that's brilliant, and a hell of a character development. I've always loved Clara, but I don't think I've loved her as much as I do right now.
I truly loved this. I count it a privlege to have watched Clara develop from start to finish. A pity more people can't see what you see and put into this video.
aww, thank you so much sugar! it's okay, I just do these for fun, sending you lots of love x
@Izzie Massey bn
I enjoyed and loved her character, but don't understand why people hate her so much. When, the raven killed, I fell apart in tears. Then, when the 12th doctor broke every timelord rules to bring her back to life I was so happy.
Literally search up "Why do most people hate Clara as a companion"? You will see why and there are many, many reasons.
For me, Clara is an absolute stand out companion and I have nothing but good memories of her. I grew up with Tom Baker, and I still probably have him as my favourite Doctor - you know, the way almost everyone has their first doctor as their favourite. But I honestly can't really remember any of the companions. New Who has really had 4 companions that are utterly memorable - Rose, The Ponds, River Song and Clara.
I recognise that Rose was a catalyst for some wonderful stories and brought a lot to the show, though she is my least favourite of the bunch.
The Ponds had a wonderful arc and while I found some of their plot arc to be irritating, overall the arc was very well done.
I wish we had seen more of River Song. I understand why we didn't, and the arc interweaving that was done between her and the Doctor was heart wrenching. Especially when you later understand her sadness in the Library.
Clara, what can I say, I just love her. I loved her confidence, I loved the arc, she was paired with probably the best new-who Doctor (and also with Peter Capaldi - sorry Peter). Most companions feel like they are simple foils for the Doctor. Clara felt like a true companion. She wasn't his subordinate, she wasn't just some lower life form he's taking along for the ride, she was a companion.
Louise Reay me too i grew up watching tom baker in late 80s ..well we had the episodes a little bit very late...
You forgot Donna :( Clara is the best though!
revengedoctor21 Martha may have been the "least" memorable but still had some brilliant episodes.
Louise Reay I know this post is a year old, but I still wanna reply.
What about Jack??
@@mahnoorm5634 the face of bow was an ok character. but he did not get enoegh screen time so that's why jack isn't on his list. plus he isn't a woman
I’m lukewarm on Clara on the whole, but this is brilliant. I really love the idea that Clara paid the price for trying to be like the Doctor. It suggests that travelling with him was like an addiction to Clara, and she got too reckless. She even holds her arms out like she’ll regenerate. It’s little details like that which make me really appreciate Face The Raven as an episode.
I liked it because this is what Any Pond could have been like if she never faced reality and the normal life with Rory....and instead chose to wait/chase after her raggedy doctor.
@@morningradio3116 I think all the companions in a way end up changed like that, they chase him and try to think like him, some of them want to go live their lives but Doctor would too if he was mortal. WWTDD on Yaz' hand tells the story more literrally. Clara wanted to be even better because of her ego and that was so different. I love it.
God, this is a masterpiece! It's freaking 8 minutes long. EIGHT MINUTES! And it includes literally everything what Clara nas done, what Clara is and what Clara will do (with Ashildr)
Still amazed because it's eight minutes long. This must have taken an eternity!
And your describtion of Clara is marvelous! Never thought of that but it's 100% true. Especially the bit with her death. Oh god, Moffat must read this. You're a genius!
Ok
Not quite everything. The most important thing is missing. The first time we see Clara. And the heartbreak of not being able to save her because she had been turned into a Dalek.
I started watching Dr. Who when Tom Baker was Doctor and Sarah Jane was his companion. Clara is my hands down all time favorite companion. Absolutely loved her. Was sad when she left. Didnt hurt that I thought Jenna Coleman was stunningly beautiful.
I really like Clara Oswald. Best of all the companions.
excellent video showcasing Clara's development from a groupie to an apprentice to an equal.
Sir JosephAdorno thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed.
When Dr. Who had heart and passion and could make you laugh so hard and weep so deeply. Gone are those days.
"Run....Run you clever Boy, and remember!"
You hit the nail on the head in the description box about Clara! You've done such a fantastic job of telling the whole story, but I especially really loved "12: There's only room for one me / Clara: what would you do now...no, what would I do now? / 12: What would you do? Yes of course." It just sums up the full hybrid circle. Subbed.
Aww thank you so much baby and yes I loved how the 12's comments on Clara's development somehow intertwine with eachother.. Moffat is a genius

Clara will always be my favorite companion.
there should be a spin off, give clara her own series.

She was a great addition to the show.
A very lovely tribute to Clara :). Even though I liked all the companions, she is by far my favourite. She had such a lovely story, and her friendship with Twelve was just epic. Loved it to bits. Thanks for sharing your work.
To me, Clara became the new Sarah Jane. I grew up with SJ and she was such a beautiful wonderful character. Clara simply captured that and then some. When she hit the screens I was smitten with her stunning beauty and her presence on screen. Amy was wonderful but Clara brought the companion role back to where it belonged, in to the hearts of the viewers.
My favourite companion by far and I loved her as Queen Victoria.
I can appreciate the other companions for their own unique values and interactions with the Doctor, but Clara has always been the one I respect the most. Because of her, I can finally see that the Doctor is not entirely fiction. He is a Time Lord, a species similar but vastly different to our own, but because of Clara, I can never say that a human can't reach the same level as the Doctor, either in the mind or in the heart. She is every bit his equal. There is hope for humanity yet.
this comment :,)
This was just so heartwarming journey to the character of clara. Thank you for this.
Aww, thank you so much!
Clara was and always will be one of the best companions of all time.
she really does think shes the main character and thinks the doctor his her companion, i actually like this
In her life she is the main character and the Doctor is an amazing mentor with a child's sense of responsibility. I love Clara, I think she's like a lot of women that frankly never gave me the time of day. She's beautiful, entitled and lucky but she's also smart, determined, confident (if reckless) and honestly, the kind of person I think it would be an awful lot of fun to do stuff with (although I'm not sure I'd want to work for her). Why shouldn't she think she's the main character.
@@alanfriesen9837 what kind of stuff???
@@darkracer1252 I was thinking stuff like hanging out, dinner and a movie, that kind of thing. But don't let my lack of imagination stand in the way of yours.
The Doctor was her Uber
It is just amazing how good this is! It's the key to understand the whole Doctor/Clara relationship and it is brilliant! To me they are the greatest Doctor/Companion combination since the beginning excepting #4 Sarah Jane and this explains why in less than 8 minutes. Please always leave this up so future Who fans can know what made Capaldi & Jenna so great!
this. just. reminds. me of how she was my favorite. of them all.
A simply gorgeous actress!
Your description is as amazing as the video. Fantastic comparison to the scenes with Missy & Flatline. In 7 minutes, you've made S9 so much more concise than I originally thought.
Best companion.
Such a lovely lady , she's my hero , she needs her own show
Clara was the best Doctor we had. I hope she will be back at some point.
I still breath your name clara oswald ....with much love .my 💘
Clara.....an example on how to do a strong female character, was a hell of alot better than Jodie. I had always hoped they would do a spinoff.
Jenna is definately a better actress than Jodie.
I think Jodie's brilliant, Chibnall just f*cked up the writing. She's a fantastic actress and we shouldn't be comparing her to other women that we think are better because women (that includes actresses) tend to get self-conscious. If you had tried your hardest and gotten a main role on a brilliant show and when you switch on Instagram, all you see is "YOU SUCK!"
I'll never understand why people choose to write this rubbish
@@urlocalrat2142 Totally agreed, I can imagine how Jodie sparks with Moffat.
@@yorkgrass THANK you! I sometimes feel like everyone hates Jodie!
i would love to see clara as the next doctor
This is every reason I love Clara Oswin Oswald! Thank you for making my life complete
I still see people who claim that Clara was never developed as a character, was never a good character, was a worthless character (yes, I've seen that). This video I think serves as a bit of a mic drop against this argument. Over 3 seasons there was more development of Clara's character than I've seen in some characters over 5, 6, even 10 years on other shows. And it was consistent, and it was well handled. Now that Clara's story is (for now) done, binge watch from Asylum of the Daleks through to Hell Bent and you'll see this to be true. Yes, I know Jenna Coleman made a late decision to come back for a third season and so Moffat came up with most of what we saw in Series 9 late in the game, but you need a strong foundation and there was one as he was able to give us a logical, organic conclusion to Clara's arc without having to retcon anything. As for this video, it's a terrific time capsule of her time on the show.
Totally agree with the points you've made, and thank you so much. Stay awesome x
for me clara was the best companion for doctor who modern era , but i will always want to see how 10 and clara would work together.... but well not everything can happen
People just don't understand the show enough. They say Clara's character is too worked up and her time line too messy. Well, they just don't understand of the deeper personality in Clara! I totally agree with you Alex, well said!
Her story developed. Her character barely did. Her character consists of being controlling at times and addicted to TARDIS travel. Besides that she's just practically perfect.
That's in terms of development. As for "good", well she's also not a believable character. She doesn't talk or act in a believable way at all. She always either knows things she theoretically shouldn't or can assume correctly quite easily. That and with what she does, she's a really overpowered character.
Clara isn't without good qualities and I can't fault Jenna's acting. She is however, a quite poorly written character.
wasn't Amy {Pond) also addicted to TARDIS travel? I mean, c'mon, she and Rory aged ten years more because of it!
I always enjoyed Clara she was strong sometimes funny and always ready to tackle what ever came.
A lot of fans don't realize Clara was named after Elizabeth Sladen. Clara was her middle name. I look at these scenes and I can't imagine any other companion OR actor doing it any better than Jenna. I only wish that due to her spending so much time in the TARDIS she had regenerated as a new TimeLord instead of "dying."
Even if you didn't agree with her character development as a companion, this male viewer was willing to give a lot of leeway, just for the privilege of watching Jenna Coleman. What a gorgeous young woman.
She might be the most adorable human being ever to exist.
200% true, First movie I've ever cried of a persons death!(twice) And I never get interested in movies/serials.. Trust me, I'm the Engineer. And I love the sufle girl!
First off, the confession: I love Jenna Coleman. I have since first sight in "The Snowmen". Yes, there was the Dalek before that. But no other companion carries connections to all 13 former Doctors, and none have done the things she did. Clara is different than all the others, and gives credence to the Hybrid being human and Time Lord. One would like to see her back, doing a guest turn with Jodie Whitaker, and watch where the story goes from here. She's worth four-and-a-half billion years to save.
One of my favourite quotes in the first minute:
"What's wrong with silly?"
im so sad about the captions. they are so beautiful. clara was my favourite companion.
Then you're fucking brain-damaged! Clara was one of the worst companions ever!
Splendid! A very interesting video showing the best and worst of Clara, Can't wait for more videos from you in the future!
Thank you so much! I try to make my videos as fast as I can x
Those last words make me feel so sad. I truly love Clara, and all she stands for. Thank you so much my favourite companion.
Season 7 Clara was so different to Season 8&9 Clara.
Season 7 Clara was clever, witty, innocent, flirty and compassionate.
Brilliant. Tear inducing. Jenna Coleman's beauty drew me into the show in The Time of the Doctor but after 10 minutes of it, I thought, " Let me start from the first episode of the reboot. At least I would get context to who she is and why she matters. I do love Moffat but I think they undermined Clara by bringing back Amy at 11's regeneration and having her react so negatively to an older looking Doctor. Heck. She supposedly seen them all! It was almost like Moffat apologizing to younger fans for making 12 older than the last 2 Doctors.
clara,,, oswald,,,, i miss you.
i still cry when i watch any episode with clara
oh my god, this is beautiful!!!! this is so wonderfully edited, and that description, oh my god. this really reminded me of why I love this character. you’re a fantastic editor!! 💕💕💕
I'm in love with this video. Brilliant editing.
Thank you so much!! Made my day x
Am I the only one who loves Clara and her ending in Hell bent??
Now she's more immortal than the doctor. She can't die as her body can't experience time.
I love clara I hope she to be on the doctor again as a champion
I would love a Clara Who she is just perfect
Correction dumbass: She is just terrible!
I absolutely loved Clara Oswald. I didn't care much for the Danny Pink love story because I want the stories to be about adventures with the Doctor. Still, even those 'secretive' adventures were fun. I would very much enjoy a Doctor Clara and Me spinoff, even though there are so many who would NOT. But as I am blessed with a HUGE imagination, I don't need something on the television to keep them alive and travelling in their TARDIS/Diner. What fun!I only just discovered your video, and plan to 'travel' through the other videos today. But as much as I love Clara, Doctor Donna is my favorite. Do you have any videos about her that I can search for and enjoy? I am always saddened when a beloved Companion must leave, especially when they can't be revisited, so I would like some insight into Donna's creation and demise. The only regret I have for Donna is the 'love interest' she met while trapped in the Library's main frame. I would have preferred one more adventure with the Doctor where she found the 'stuttering man', and left the Doctor to be with him. Ironically, while I don't want to mix romance with the Doctor, I want a romance to end happily. Thank you for sharing this information with us.
Nidra Blades Dottir love your commentary! Thanks for going through my videos. :) Sadly, I don't know any videos that concentrate on Doctor Donna. :(
Clara is getting an Untold Adventures comic series sometime in 2019! I'm not sure if it includes Ashildr/Lady Me, but it's definitely something im keeping an eye on :)
Clara was one of the best. There is another called Jenny, the doctors daughter, no story line was developed. I understand that a book has been written with Jenny as a Time Lord.
This Christmas special was the best tone for me and the most heart breaking for me.
This editing is amazing!!!!
Clara is the best Character in the whole series! Even better and möre myterious than the Doctor himself.
Dr. Who without Clara? No chance
Ottfried schmidt something tells me, we haven't seen last of Clara. like Sarah Jane before her, became epic, now she has joined those elite ranks😊
Ava Mendez 😲
TBH I would have preferred Victorian Clara as the companion
East London Accent makes it better in my opinion
I think in some regards, in the later series they tried to make her character somewhat like Victorian Clara
She definitely was the best, she had everything, a bit of weirdness and a sense of adventure to her, she was funny and flirty with a big heart and that magical look in her eyes that she knew there was more to what she knew to be true and a true sense of wonder but she was incredibly clever too, I loved the way she thought about things and what she learned from Ashildr as well
That was the original plan, but Moffat scrapped it last minute.
I know I've commented on your video before but -- gosh! This is just so good! Incisive, insightful, deftly connecting the pieces to give the clearest explanation I know of Clara's relation with the Doctor. I have it bookmarked and watch it over and over again. Clara and 12 -- for my money, other than Sarah Jane and the 4th Doctor, the greatest Doctor/Companion saga by far.
What people son't seem to understand about Clara is that she's not being conceited, obnoxious and arrogant, she realises the pattern, she's seen what's happened to the Doctor's other companions, and she doesn't want to end up like that. She loves the Doctor, at first it was a romantic flirty sort of way with 11th, but then it changed, she knew it had to just as the Doctor did, instead she channeled her love into making the Doctor proud, and being seen as an equal, so he would never look down on her again and instead be able to look him in the eye. The pain of her being left behind when 11th went to live in Christmas Town, when she thought they'd be together her whole life, is exactly what made her like this. She loved The Doctor and wanted to stay with him forever, so she did everything in her power to do that.
Yup, this has been and always will be my favourite Clara and her Doctor video. Wonderful job 👏 🥰
Saying that Clara was awesome takes nothing away from any other character; I've never been the brightest bulb in the package, and so much of this show left me confused in the end - but I was just along for the ride, like an extra companion if you will. So I don't pretend to understand everything about Clara's character, but I still feel as if she was way deeper than we saw in the show. There just had to be more to her even than we were shown - which was a lot - and I feel like we'll never really get to see her entire character the way it was meant to be shown.
I loved this woman so much .....
Clara definitely is my absolute fave. I feel like she had an incredible chemistry with the Doctor (especially with Twelfth!!) and was the only one who was able to keep up with them. Another thing i loved about Clara is that she felt like a TRUE companion, not just a simple background for the Doctor.
I just burst into tears when Twelve broke every Timelord rule to save Clara.. I remember it so clearly..
Honestly i miss Twelfth and Clara sm, my favourite duo :(((
If you really think about it. Clara was practically tailored to be the perfect companion. Missy (the Master) purposefully put Clara in the Doctors path. The master is the one person in the whole universe to know the doctor the way they do. They chose Clara with that in mind.
I absolutely loved this! And the description actually made me cry 💛
She very quickly became my absolute favourite companion

Maybe because I feel like her character had not a defined personality until maybe Danny's death. Maybe because I couldn't accept Amy's death fast enough to like another companion right after.
But I need to rewatch her episodes now so I can give her another chance.
Great video, I like how you catched all the "Clara is the Doctor" thing c:
Just amazing, pure genius what you've done here :)

Jenna with Matt Smith was great, but Jenna with Peter Capaldi was magic. From Oswin the Dalek to falling too far to Earth, to facing the raven and having the man you love work four-and-a-half billion years to get you back; 5-foot-1 and crying, I never stood a chance. Besides her being absolutely adorable, Jenna is quite the actor, as she's proven in her post-Doctoral work. I'm in love, too.
I would love a series made for her, in a kind of torchwood style

Clara would have been a better Doctor than the current one.
I think at times Jenna Louise-Coleman may have been considered for the role of the Doctor if they were going to give it to a female before Whittaker.
Honestly, I had considered that was the original plan... or possibly.
And I agree: I do think she'd made a better Doctor than Whittaker; however, I think a lot of Whittaker's currently is the weaker stories being written.
I will always remember the best piece of advise the 12th doctor gave Clara.
Don’t be lasagne
One of the rare times I am glad my youth is behind me, for Jenna Coleman is my perfect woman, and had I seen her when I was in my youth I would have wasted away pining for her.
