The mechanic forgot the head steady tie rod, which reduces engine vibration. The head steady is very important, and can be seen clearly on most photos of both original and restored WD M20s.
That never happened at Armoury Road, they made 120,000 of them, rapidly and without a torque wrench - or for that matter gloves. I helped start one, by pushing, still in Army service anout 20 years after it was made. Im only guessing but presumably by then the magneto had a poor condenser.
